Question

Forum session login/timeouts

We've had some changes made for session timeouts. Are people still having to constantly log-in throughout the day? Today I've managed to stay logged in without any forum activity for up to 3 hours or slightly longer. Has it improved for others? The login session should now be about 4 hours. It was supposed to be two hours previously, but for some accounts it might have been shorter.

Just got knocked of  when went to this very topic we are in now. Then I noticed was signed in to to adobe.com (Store) which I hadn't touched. I then went to  login page. After Login it imediately bounced to page smilar the one I showed with the File not found error above. (Not the same one)

Then I dissmissed the window. Went back to email notification clicked this message link again and I am back and signed in to both Adobe.com store and AdobeForums.

Aargh!  Logged out again while scanning messages.  PLEASE fix this pain in the butt nonsense of getting logged out while actively using the system.

And on top of that, when I finished logging in I got the delightful message:

    An unexpected error has occurred

    • The specified thread was not found.
I believe the appropriate comment is FUBAR.

Edit:  What screwed up the message format?

Thanks, Bob, this is precisely the error message I was refering to in my post #58 above.

I've spent the last few hours trying to replicate this. I've made my sessions time out, deleted cookies, logged in with an account that doesn't have an Adobe ID session associated with it, etc., etc.

The only way I was able to get to a point where I would lose the content of a reply was to be sitting on that reply when the session timed out (which means not having used anything else in the forums for 4 hours) and also having my Adobe ID session timed out (which is a much smaller number, maybe 20 minutes or less). And then hitting the Post Reply button. Then I would get an error that I was not authorized to post (because I was not logged in) and a prompt to try logging in. Which I would do and then I would be back in the reply box, but it would be empty. But to get to this situation I had to be working on that reply for four hours or more.

If I was on a page that showed a list of messages in a discussion and I hit the Reply button after my session timed out I would be asked to log in before I could start typing a reply. So nothing was lost.

What seems different here is the mention of "thread not found." Were you trying to create a new thread when this happened? One more scenario for me to go try. Back soon...

This is my last report about the problem, posted on April 21 in another thread about this:

In my case, logins are behaving in a most variable and unpredictable way. At times, I stay logged for two or more days, including nightly shutdowns, on both my Mac and my Win machines. At times, I remain logged in one (either) of them but I am kicked out in the other. At times, I am not logged when I start one or both my computers, but I will stay logged all day, sometimes in one (either) but not in the other. Sometimes I have to login in every time I try to come in (at least three times a day). But, fully agreeing with Dave and several others, the most infuriating experience is being kicked out from this box while writing a message. Unbelievable.

As the situation didn't change in many days, I had stopped paying attention to the logout problem, so that all I can say beforehad is that I remember having had to log in at least a couple of times a day, every day, but this may have been as random as before. I'll start paying attention again tomorrow, and report.

I'm definitely staying logged in longer, but the quote from Jive seems to suggest I could only get logged out going from one forum to another by deliberately clearing cookies and choosing to start a new session. Not so.

Not really, Kath.  All jive cookies have an expiration date (which some users have changed on their own ) but Jive seems to be saying you can shorten your session by clearing the cookie.  Sure, I can shorten the wait at the doctor's office by walking out too, but I miss out on the consultation.

Anyhow, I'll report if messing with the cookies has helped or not.

I almost hate to mention this, but in all the time I've been using the Jive forums (beginning with the Preview version), I have been unexpectedly logged out during an active session exactly once (before this recent change) and it was during message composition.

I typically clear all cookies and cache files often during the day if I'm helping in Web development groups and/or forums. But there have been just as many times that I've left everything alone - overnight or not - and was still logged in. Sometimes over computer off/on sessions at that.

Permanent login is a feature available only to the few, the privileged, the auto-repeat email posters

Of course, now that I said that, it will start happening to me. I will try to pay attention to the steps to repro.

Well I have not noticed it getting any better. Every time I come back from working I have to login. Its getting tiresome and I'm finding myself coming back less and less. This new forum is a PITA and helping out just isn't as much fun. So not coming here is turning out to be the best option.

Four hours? Like Gordon Ramsay would say -- not good enough!

We never had to login to the old forums if the "stay logged in" whatever it was called button was enabled. Is this software incapable of this simple feature?

People, people.  Please be reasonable.  It is crucial that the security of the new system be bulletproof, so it makes perfect sense for it to log us out after a short while. We don't want others sitting down at our computers and giving out bad advice while pretending to be us!

Points, people!  Think about the points!

There is absolutely NOTHING unreasonable about expecting the system to keep me logged in while I am actively composing a response.  This has nothing to do with security.

    PLEASE fix  the timeout mess!

I was logged in.  I composed a reply to a question in the Lightroom forum and was LOGGED OUT was I tried to post the message.

    CRAP!

Been much better for me lately, Thanks.

(Is it four hours from the last time you did something, or four hours from when you logged in.)

Come to think of it, I was logged in yesterday, and left my computer on overnight, and was still logged in. That was 16 hours.

I spoke too soon in my prior message. It logged me out after posting it, and editing it. That is frustrating. I would expect to be logged out at the start of the day, after 16 hours of inactivity. But to be logged out after a few minutes of re-entering is a pain.

I don't know if this might help John in tracking things down. Hopefully it will.

I tried loggin into adobe .com (The store) no troubles.

I was still online for forums. I'll have to try when I get kicked off

    April 28, 2009

I logged in at 8am, my time (EDT) i'll try the store... soonish...

    April 28, 2009

clicked on the shopping cart ~9:35 my time. and it had me listed as "guest" at that point. although i come back here and it says "welcome [myloginname]"... so at least that (store logout) appears to be working, even though there's no visual indication of that when in the forums (in fact to the contrary it appears you remain logged into the store!).
