That appears to be a link to his own design site. I don't consider that spam. We're looking for things completely outside the scope of the forums: sneakers, watches, porn, get-rich-quick, etc.

self advertisement is no longer considered spam? that's a departure.

in the past it was acceptable to mention a personal site only if it were specifically relevant to the conversation... oh well. color me a traditionalist.

This has always been a gray area. I don't see an issue with a simple link to a personal website. I've never had an issue with that. But some of our hosts have been more vehement than I. The hosts are not under my control. I can make suggestions.

With expanded community help, LiveDocs, Forums, etc., I think we are looking to build more and expanded community. We're not trying to trap people into staying within the forums. That's where the relevant links come in. So, yes, links in the message that seem commercial are going over the line. But a link in a signature line seems OK. I participate in a number of online forums and generally have a link to my personal site in my signatures.

If it's a personal web site that's fine but I took a good look at his link and he's offering a product for money. To me that's spam!

I'm with Dave on this.

From what I've seen, most of the vocal WebX users have expressed a dislike—nay, a disdain—for signatures accompanying people's posts. They were almost solely the domain of NNTP users. Part of the reason we don't like them is because they take up space, and because it's simply tiresome seeing them time after time after time.

Since the tradional NNTP experience has more or less fallen by the wayside (that some of the character of the NNTP experience can be simulated with the email participation is notwithstanding) it seems to me that we might just want to continue to urge users not to regularly post links to their sites unless the post and thread would deem it relevant to the subject being discussed.

Additionally, I'd like to know whether there will be an expansion of the content we can post in our profiles, like we used to be able to do with the WebX accounts? In my opinion that is the far better place for info that many would post as a signature file. That way, that static info CAN be available at all times to all users, it just doesn't have to be waded past in every thread and post.

Wanna quit having to worry about this particular gray area, and the arguments that difference of opinion will cause? Get rid of the gray area by enabling our profiles to include more user-defined info.

The longer term goal is to have one Adobe.com profile page for each user. It would be outside the forum, but linked to in place of the internal/forum profile. It would also be linked to from any other places on Adobe.com where you can enter content in the Community Help system.

Sorry, I was trying to be helpful and respond appropriately to peoples messages.  I did not see a place in my profile area where I could link to my web site.  I am freelance designer so my personal web site does advertise my services as well.  Please let me know if there is some other place I should include my link, or if it was decided that my current place is ok.  I did not feel like a small one line signature took up too much space or was distracting from the information in any way.  Thanks.

Let me know how that comes out.  I guess I just firgured one of the big reasons to help someone in a forum (other than just to be helpful) was that it allowed people to find you.  And since there was no place I could see in my profile to include a link, I included one in my signature.  I didn't mean to cause trouble or require calling a meeting, but thanks for checking all this out.

Don't worry, since we moved to this new forum there is a conflict of opinions as to what constitutes spam.

In the previous PS Win forum it was considered that any advertising of goods or services should be excluded.

At least your posts are helpful – some of the real spammers don't contribute anything.

Real spammers should be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Edit Profile should now show places for a URL, a brief (1 line or so) bio, and a list of products you use.

Thats awesome.  Its a good feature to be adding!  I also recieved a notice that one of my posts was removed, is it not possible for them to just remove the link if they don't like it?

Some hosts are more trigger-happy than others, they all have slightly different attitudes - also, if a bunch of abuse reports are coming in, they may not have time to be too delicate about what action they take - don't take it personally Myself, I preferred it when known hosts tended to look after specific forums, you got used to what was acceptable in a given place.

It's still a bit all over the place as far as hosting/moderating goes, or that's my impression. I hope it settles down.

nice john... can i make one suggestion?

change the label: "Adobe Products You Use:"

to something like:

Adobe Products You Use

And Brief System Description:

that IS the perfect place to put some system info, and if asked for up front, maybe more people will use it that way...
