I'm going to be the Devil's advocate here and actually agree that it would be required. From time to time, I have to deal with suppliers that aren't in the ink-on-paper space but still involved in printing, but they need to handle the files that I've given them that were created in InDesign. Now these suppliers range from applying spot UV varnishes to making hot foil stamps or emboss/deboss blocks - the two latter are often done with cnc machining and they need to open the files outside of Acrobat... so naturally one of the first issues they will have is missing fonts... and I certainly don't want them to substitute the fonts out! It's also very easy to say "use another provider" but come to Adelaide sometime and see just how many providers we have that are local and not interstate in Melbourne or Sydney. Cost and Time does play a big part in who we use as a contractor and I'd love to say to my supplier "get with the times" but they'll just tell me to "get another supplier" that will add days to the turnaround and eat $$$ of margin. I'm wondering if it is a feature of the font that's being used. What is the name of the typeface that is being used? EDIT - I've just tried to replicate the fault by creating the same type in the same font (that I believe to be Nunito medium) but there aren't any opentype features that would superscript numbers and brackets. Numbers, maybe... but it would do all numbers, not just numbers in brackets (this is if "fractions" was checked in the opentype portion of the paragraph style dialog box) but it wouldn't do the brackets as there isn't an alternative glyph for a superscripted pair of brackets. To the OP - what happens if you copy this text to a new indesign document; or change the paragraph style applied to it? To paraphrase, you would like to send your designer the text but somehow tag it so that has the intended formats that you want. Fair to say? InDesign has great control over formatting. I'd suggest reading this link first about how paragraph styles work: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/paragraph-character-styles.html If the styles are already agreed upon and have appropriate names, something as simple as a tag at the start of a paragraph should be enough information to provide to the designer so they are aware of what paragraph style to apply. They can then apply the appropriate style when taking in the content and remove the human-readable tag to it once formatted. Either that, or use PDF round-tripping. That is, let the designer prepare PDF proofs for you, and when you get them, highlight them using Acrobat's markup tools (link here https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/commenting-pdfs.html) so that using different coloured highlights can indicate to the designer what styles to apply. ... Thank you for the mention. In this case the OP might be placing the excel file rather than using them in a data merge. If placed correctly (that is, linked to the source file) the contents of the excel tables in the InDesign file should update while maintaining the formatting... should. I use this method when making school diaries so that the monthly calendars on week to a spread pages can be updated each year and have the numbers change but the format retained. To the OP - I completely understand the frustration, but to play Devil's Advocate for a moment, there may be more than meets the eye. I've a feeling when the PDF is made from Adobe InDesign, there may be a certain structure that's kept in the PDF that future versions of InDesign will understand and be able to translate the PDF back to InDesign... but PDFs made elsewhere may not have that syntax and as a result wouldn't import properly and would result in a poor conversion.  My guess is that they're trying to make the PDF->ID conversion as seamless as possible so items made in the original ID file such as styles, layers, parent pages, threaded text etc are maintained. Ideally, what I think would be better is a prompt that at least said that the PDF wasn't made in InDesign, but at least attempt a conversion, and what you get, you get... warts and all (like OmniMarkz from Markzware currently). However that is better done as a suggestion to the InDesign developers over at indesign.uservoice.com That said, competitor software that opens PDFs natively isn't without its own issues. Mike Rankin has a 40 minute Youtube video where he highlights the issues with such a conversion. Similarly, Markzware's OmniMarkz product isn't a turnkey solution but does allow for other conversion avenues, particularly ID to Illustrator - something I'm doing a lot of as the ESKO plugins work in Illustrator only. With all of that out of the way, don't think I'm cheerleading here... if you've read my blog back in October 2023 you'll see two pieces that were critical of the 2024 release – the first post was a parody piece highlighting fake features that weren't actually implemented (but arguably should be), and the second post was why I made the parody piece (TL:DR - to highlight what could have been). To their credit, the InDesign team did implement one of these fake features, and not as a major release but as a minor patch (i.e. add Firefly content to InDesign) and actively promoting the upcoming feature of the PDF conversion in the beta. At the same time though, this is very early days of the PDF->ID conversion, so with further input from the community via the indesign.uservoice.com page, perhaps the team will heed the user feedback.   ... There's a better way, but requires having to make an Illustrator Action that simply calls the script from a menu item. Then, the action - within the actions palette - can be assigned a limited amount of KBSCs using the F1-F15 keys and with or without Ctrl/Command and Shift. My workplace uses the TEC-IT Barcode Studio application to generate barcodes en-masse, including QR codes that require that extra "something". I also note that Adobe Express can make QR codes with the feature of semi rounded or fully rounded elements instead of just squares, but can only export that as PNG. I like that idea Rainer. I'd add to that by using a generative fill feature to add bleed, particularly when I'm setting a case-bound cover but the art from the client doesn't have nearly enough bleed to go around the case wrap. For me, this is life imitating art - back in October 2023, I'd submitted a parody piece to my Colecandoo blog https://colecandoo.com/2023/10/19/new-features-in-indesign-2024-and-about-time-too/ where the second bullet point - "Magic Stock" now appears to have been implemented.  I can see several use-cases for this tech, most obvious is for quickly making mock-ups for clients - no need to leave the ID environment to fetch an appropriate placeholder graphic to insert into a mock-up if I'm able to get one live in the software. I'd only use them as placeholders and instruct my client of such and that they need to supply photos that they want to see, but an added bonus might be that they're satisfied with the images and to proceed as-is, so another time-save. That said, at the time of writing, this feature has been released in a dot release (19.4), not a major release where I would have expected it to be unveiled as a keynote feature. Once the file is in Adobe Acrobat, the fields can be changed as the opening poster states. However, there is more than one way of changing the color of the text in the fields apart from manually. This can be scripted. Perhaps try asking over in the Acrobat forums, or DM me and I can send you an Action List that features the javascript that allows the type color to be changed. I regularly run an Acrobat Action on forms that I've made from InDesign, because the InDesign buttons and forms panel has not kept pace with the application for some time... but that's another story. ... Hello there Marc.   You didn't have to rewrite this but I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'd tried writing my own but then realised InDesign didn't have Hex a DOM colorspace (https://www.indesignjs.de/extendscriptAPI/indesign-latest/#ColorSpace.html) so the Hex value had to be converted to an RGB value first. I tried using an adaptation of a find/change script but again was having no joy. I've heard so many people rave about ChatGPT being the way to go, and when it produces the code, from a novice scripter (like me!) perspective, the code looks clean and has all variables in full. That said, this is far from my first ChatGPT script fail (or tenth) but thought I'd get more opinions on it.   The script you made adds a tab and an X that is coloured, but I think my demonstration was misunderstood - I actually want the colored X to replace the hex number of the color. I'll try and jerry-rig the script you have prepared, though because many of the variables used in the script are single letters, it'll take me a little while to get there. ... View more
