Use Character styles in Word, along with Paragraph styles. You can use Replace in Word to search for the formats and apply the style. Better yet, you can record a macro to automate this process on other files. The change actually makes sense when discussing based-on masters/parents. It's common to refer to these as a parent/child relationship (much like XML and HTML). He should be able to make sure the name of the IX file is "BookFileNameIX.fm", drop it in the document folder, and then generate the index. The process of working with Frame has been almost identical since version 7 for most of the features. There were some major interface changes along the way (panels rather than dialog boxes) but the overall function remained the same. Obviously there are new features, but the majority of them affect structured documents.   For you book numbering, just right-click as I mentioned.  The TOC and Index are formated on the reference pages. You can use the current help file as the process is the same. Your Index is not a generated file--you must have added it like a regular chapter. Note the color of the TOC in the book; all generated files must have that color to update when you update the book. To get your existing index to work with your book, remove the index from the book and add the Index in the same way you did the TOC. It should be listed in the menu just below the TOC option. If you have an existing index design, before you add the generated index--rename a copy of your "good" index the same as your current one. The pattern is simple: the Book file name with the generated code (TOC, LOF, LOT, IX, etc.). Be sure to create it with the menu--do NOT add it like a regular file.   ... View more

Check your Format>Document>Numbering settings in the Book menu (you can right click on the documents too.) This can be done within the documents, but a Book file would be a better workflow. In the Numbering Properties dialog box, set your first document to start at chapter 8 under the Chapter tab (top setting). Set the second document to Continue Numbering from Previous Chapter in Book. 8 GBs is very small by today's standards. Have you looked to see if your computer can have the RAM upgraded? RAM is relatively an inexpensive upgrade.  I believe InDesign 2022 (17) was the last version to require a minimum of 4 GB, but I suspect it would have problems running with large/complex documents. Presumedly, this is not a print document. Technically, it could be printed by shrinking oversized pages to fit the paper size, but the result would basically be the same as reducing the text size to fit the content on a single page.  If it is meant to be an online document, it sounds as if you want a website, since the HTML pages have not have a static page depth. You could use Dreamweaver, included with your Adobe CC subscription, but there are easier to use systems available for blog-type sites.   ... View more

Did you ask the printer if they can adjust the space in their imposition program for the non-double pages? I've had to do this before due to a last-minute page size change (client switched to a different printer). Then, on a copy of the file, I would run a script to break each text frame from the flow. Delete all the non-spread pages. The text won't reflow on the remaining pages due to the step above.  (You will still need to check for any first line indents that don't belong.)  The use the Page tool to adjust those spreads. Make note of the reference points when changing the size.  On a PDF of the original document, delete the double-page spreads.  Send the separate re-sized PDF with VERY CLEAR instructions.  Be sure to view a proof that has all the pages sized properly.   I would also ask about a lay-flat perfect bound binding. It costs more but the readers won't have to crush the spine to read the text in the spine gutter.   ... View more
