As part of the process of creating a photo image from a Raw file, a color profile has to be applied. For each supported camera model Adobe supplies a set of such profiles, however they are not identical to the profiles created by the maker for use in the camera firmware for the processing of jpgs; therefore ACR also has, in many cases, a second set which attempts to closely emulate the maker's profiles. These are the Camera Matching Profiles.

In LRC, by highlighting two different photos in the filmstrip and hitting 'C', you can view side-by-side default or edited previews. By using the Virtual Copy feature you can use 'C' to see the VC and the Master compared, or two VCs.

Do you mean that you cannot re-edit an exported image file? That is true, but nothing is final and fixed until export. The edit instructions in the catalog are just that, no more than provisional instructions, easily changed. Recently, motivated by LR's latest technical advances, I have been using some spare time to redo old photos that were originally imported into LR 15 years ago and have patiently been waiting to be renewed. The only problem is that once you have accumulated a backlog of about a hundred thou, the vision of all the wonderful updates you could do becomes a remote dream.

I use FastRawViewer to review the card and find the keepers. As well as its speed its advantages are a real Raw histogram and both numerical and graphic over/under exposure indicators (the histogram in LRC, ACR and most other converters are not Raw histograms), the ability to show two, three or four images on-screen simultaneusly for comparisons, and the ability to pass images to a variety of converters. I copy them to disc and then import to LRC using the Add function.

My photo files occupy 560 GB, my LRC catalog + previews folder is 41 GB, and my latest catalog backup zip is 671 MB. You can see that the catalog is significantly smaller then the collection of Raw files. I suggest you search for slow-down problems elsewhere.

LRC needs no cloud space. All photo files are stored at home. As for the subscription model - second, third and fourth thoughts ran out years ago.

Since the release of the final version of LR6 (Vs. 6.14.1) in Dec. 2017, five major editions of the program's successor, Lightroom Classic, have been issued and the current one is called LRC 11.5. It is entirely self-contained (unlike the parallel cloud based app called simply "Lightroom"). LRC can be obtained by enrolling to one of the Adobe subscription plans.

It has been suggested that this might be due to Camera Raw applying corrections from camera profiles, but I have not found a way to turn off the profiles and have not found settings in Photoshop or ACR preferences that affect this problem. I think the advice you received referred to LENS PROFILES, which are found in the Optics panel, and not to Camera (Color) Profiles which are selected in the Basic panel. Lens corrections are turned off at the top off the panel.

Digital file volume, whether it is expressed in KB, MB or GB, is not relevant for determining whether an image is suitable for printing at a particular size. What is important is the number of pixels along the sides that are available for each inch of print. Generally, the commercial machines are designed to work best when fed 300 pixels per inch and the caring/fussy photographer will submit his work with those dimensions. E.g., for an 8x10 ideally send 2400 x 3000 pixels. But the printer operators are fairly liberal in their demands because their intake software can resize the image to the needed 300 ppi. However, all resizing does have a price in quality and I imagine they would be reluctent to accept less than 150 ppi. Another factor that comes into play is that the larger the print, the greater the viewing distance and the harder it is to judge quality. Thus, for large wall-hanging prints they might accept 100 ppi. If because of a small native size or extensive cropping, you have too few pixels, I believe it is better to use Lightroom's Export resizing than to leave it to the lab.

Axel - Showing four comparison versions of the same image is a feature of Denoise. Jon - 1. If you change the view to a single version, does it finish updating? 2. I suggest you check the Preference settings ( File/Preferences/Processing-Save ) and set Processor to Auto.

Sort of. Bridge by itself can't write a jpg, but you can open the file in Camera Raw and ACR can render and save a jpg without recourse to PS.

"The first photo is on lightroom, look at the sky. The second one is the basic without lightroom." Digital images don't just display themselves, they are read and displayed by a specific program. If the first shot is of Lightroom, what is the "basic" program in the second shot? Moreover, as well as asking why you see grain in the sky in the first (LR) shot, you might also ask why there is such a marked loss of detail in the wall of the building in the second shot. The answer to both questions is most likely that the "basic" image is a jpg created by your camera and embedded in the NEF for display purposes. While processing that jpg the camera did some noise reduction (too much in my opinion). Add to that the fact that the process of creating a jpg destroys a lot of image data.

Perhaps you have somehow set a raw default that sets the crop to 1:1. A preset that contains a crop setting?

Anytime you mask part of the image (Select Subject, Select Sky, Linear Gradient Filter, Radial Gradient Filter, etc.) the Local Adjustments Panel opens. There you can make edits that affect only the masked area. The panel is what you see in the illustration in my previous post.

As mentioned above, the ppi number has no significance for the quality of the digital image itself or the file size. It is only an instruction for a printer regarding the size of the print. In your case 2176x3264 at 600 ppi means a 3.6 x 5.4 inch print, around post-card size. Should you want a larger print, the printer will simply disregard the embedded ppi number, in effect using a smaller ppi (as print size goes up, ppi goes down and vice-versa) until the ppi gets too small for acceptable quality. 300 ppi is usually considered ideal and 150 ppi roughly the bottom limit. I say roughly because other factors like viewing distance also come into play.

What lies behind any "Auto" button is an assumption about what will keep the customers coming back. But that is based on what the market research dept. considers "average" taste. If you don't fall into that classfication, Auto buttons aren't for you.

Are you perhaps confusing the CR Plugin and the CR Filter? The Plugin has Camera Matching profiles and Adobe Raw profiles only when it works with Raw files. The Filter never sees Raw data (only rendered bitmaps), so it doesn't access those profiles.
