P: Photoshop 26.8.1 Remove tool shows "program error" after using Generative Fill with Transparency

As the title says, I'm trying to use the new AI remove tool after removing some people using the Generative Fill tool, as the ai generated grass is usually more accurate when using Remove. This is something I have been doing since the remove tool came out, and it has worked without error until last week. Now, whenever I have used generative fill on an image, and I attempt to use the AI Remove tool, Photoshop says "Could not complete your request because of a program error", regardless of whether my selection includes the area where Generative Fill was used. I get the same result if I rasterise the Gen Fill layer, or if I flatten the image. However, if I undo the Gen Fill, or open a new image without any Gen Fill used on it, the Remove tool will work as it is supposed to. The file type does not seem to matter, as I have tried .dng, .psd, .png and .jpg and got the same results for all.

My question is, why might this be happening? Is it deliberate choice by adobe, or an unintentional bug?

Thanks for sharing this, @Ged_Traynor.

I was able to reproduce the issue on my end as well. I checked with the team, and a new bug has already been logged. The product team is actively working on a fix for this.

In the meantime, as a temporary workaround, try enabling “Create New Layer” in the options bar. This should help avoid the error.

We’ll keep you posted once there’s an update on the fix. Appreciate your patience!

Hi everyone!

This issue should be resolved in the v26.9 release. When you get a chance, please update to the latest version and let us know if you're still seeing the same problems.
To update Photoshop 26.9, click "Update" in the Creative Cloud desktop app next to Photoshop. More detailed instructions for updating.

Thanks so much for your patience!

Best,

i think adobe is intentionally doing this so you'd use more of your Generative AI and easily loose all credits then you'd have to upgrade and pay more. haha

Same program error with the remove tool when I had a transparent background. If I made the background visible alone, the same error occured. When I stamped visible to make a combined image layer, the remove tool worked.

Thank you all.

Remove Tool – Program Error

Whenever I try to use the Remove Tool, I get this error message:

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."

What I’ve already tried:

  • Set Image Processing in Preferences to "More Stable"
  • Relaunched Photoshop
  • Verified internet and GPU drivers
  • Cleared cache
  • Unchecked "Use Graphics Processor"

But the issue still persists.

System: MacBookPro M2 Pro Sequaia 15.5 MacOS

Photoshop: 26.8.1 Release

Just tried the smart object workaround and it was successful for me (key part is doing "flatten image" after opening the smart object). So "flatten image" is the way to get rid of the error, and if you don't want to actually flatten everything you can do it inside a smart object and use the remove tool (with generative ai either ON or AUTO) there.

I have also found a situation where I have multiple layers, get the error, but if I flatten the image it works fine. However from that point I moved forward and was unable to get the error again even with multiple layers. But if I reverted to the history state before flattening, it gave me the error again.

Additionally, I found that if I hide a layer, then it generates an error, but if I move the layer I want to use the remove tool on to the top of the stack it works fine.

I am getting the same error on Mac and found that the remove tool works fine when used first in the editing process but when I try it after aligning layers or any masking, the error pops up. So until this is fixed I try to do all my remove tool process first or if that is not possible, I stamp the visible layers, then convert this layer to a smart object, double click to open the smart object, then flatten the image, make my edits using remove tool, then save back into the original. A bit of a clunky workaround, but perhaps this process will help someone else experiencing this bug with the remove tool.

I am getting program error when using the remove tool

here is the error:

Could not complete your request because of a program error.

and the option to hit OK or learn how to fix it, the second option does not really tell you anything as it refers to opening and closing files but not when using the remove tool.

Now I have set the remove tool to Auto Al when I turn off Auto Al then it works but as soon I turn it on it does not .

strangely enough on some images  with the AI selected to auto  or on it works but not on others. One on other file i was working on I had to turn all layers visible then it worked as soon I turned an underlying layer off which did not even had to do anything with above layer anymore it was just there . it stopped working . so not sure why it works on some photos or files but not on others . Hope anybody has some answers or help
