P: Print dialog extremely slow to open/does not respond

Yes, I'm using the latest PS CC 2018 and the most up-to-date Win10.
Adobe Photoshop Version: 19.1.2 20180302.r.277 2018/03/02: 1160083  x64
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
Version: 10 or greater 10.0.16299.15
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:12, Stepping:2 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading
Physical processor count: 6
Logical processor count: 12
Processor speed: 3331 MHz
Built-in memory: 24574 MB
Free memory: 10855 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 21907 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 70 %

I'm not using the print option in PS very often, but only every 10 days or so. So I don't know exactly with which update this issue was introduced... But about 4 weeks ago, everything worked just fine and since the latest 19.x updates it got screwed somewhere.

What happens?
Open a file, you can edit, create layers, zoom, modify, brush, whatever you want, everything works smoothly. Small files, large files, all kinds of formats (JPEG, TIFF, etc.) no problems.
BUT, as soon as you click on File/Print, the havoc starts!
The mouse cursor becomes slooooooow.... system becomes slow, even a browser window starts to slow down. The Windows Resource Monitor shows about 15-25% CPU utilization, but the Photoshop.exe PID gets a red entry; "Not Responding"  After about 15-25 seconds, the Print Dialog window finally appears. But every action in this window, results in another slow/stall behavior of my system. In fact the Print Dialog becomes unusable! Only when I click on 'Cancel', everything is back to normal again.

Done so far to check/verify:
-all other applications work fast and without any issues when printing! Even other Adobe s/w like AI, Acrobat, ID, etc. Also MS Office applications and other graphic software keep on working just fine with their printing dialogs/windows/features.
So it's a specific PS CC 2018 + Print only issue!
-Checked the Event Log files; but there is nothing logged about any PS issues. (?)

-I've even uninstalled PS CC 2018 from my system and cleaned up all remains, including appdata leftovers and all temporary garbage from PS. Reinstalled the latest PS CC 2018 from the CreativeCloud app; left PS CC 2018 with all its standard settings and just tried to print again.
No luck, problem with print dialog from PS CC 2018 is back immediately.
Then I set all my personal settings and performance enhancements within PS CC 2018; no change. GPU acceleration on/off; no difference. Scratch disks on/off/change; no difference.
Even reinstalled all my printer drivers; no difference. But as I mentioned before, ALL OTHER applications do print just fine! Only PS CC 2018 print function is unusable.

When searching for this issue on the www, I found this exact issue:
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2411564
but no solution...

Anyone?

NVIDIA as well. However I did already know that my GPU was not the best to use in CC, I have had a few unrelated issues in Photoshop due to my GPU (even though it is a supported card).

It is NOT an AMD issue. I have Intel i7 + nVidia graphics card and I have the same issue. Stop blaming AMD and start blaming Adobe.

I believe this to be an AMD driver issue. If you have AMD GPU, roll back to AMD 17.10.1 driver and then let us know if this solves your problem. That solution worked for me so I am curious to know if it works for others. Jeff Tranberry states Adobe is working on this issue. I have not seen any new AMD GPU drivers since 18.3.4 which does not work.

I updated to latest version CC on Win7 recently and suddenly I have a similar print dialogue problem.
It actually crashed the print spooler for all applications (non adobe) that I had open, so I had to save quit and restart.

The print dialogue also tends to crash Photoshop a lot, luckily it recovered files.

I don't print from Photoshop often, I don't think I plan to anytime soon with this behavior. Moreover, with this thread getting into GPU discussion, it is getting too complicated for me to deal with. I'll see what happens after the next update.

I have the same problem! Extremely slow printing dialogue, also slowing down everything else that I try to do on the computer while the print dialogue is open.

Also almost impossible to use the Epson print settings menus because the text do not seem to be adjusted for 8K display running full resolution. (Probably an Epson- issue).

By now I have encountered four - five different serious issues with my PS install since opting to pay  for the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe, please fix this issue with the slow printer dialogue!

I am running Win 10 64 bit on a brand new system, with top notch graphics card running the latest drivers. AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor, 64GB RAM, Radeon Vega Frontier Edition GPU, Epson SP 9900 printer and software.

Thanks.
I tried this and got different results than you so I have gone back to 17.10.1. Which has the fewest problems.

Have you tried this? (see previous posting)

  • -Used DDU to completely cleanse AMD driver software from my system. Rebooted in Safe Mode and restarted Windows with just the simple "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"  present as graphics card.
  • -Tested PS CC 2018 Print Dialog --> works just fine! (GPU acceleration off)
  • -Then Windows decided to automatically install a standard driver, after a few minutes the graphics card is identified as "AMD Radeon (TM) R9 200 series" driver version 22.19.162.4
  • -Tested PS CC 2018 Print Dialog --> works just fine! (GPU acceleration off)
  • -Clicked on "Update driver" in the Device Manager, Windows downloads a newer (?) driver and installs this one. Now it's version 22.19.677.257.
  • -Just to be sure, rebooted my system and also checked if color calibration profiles (ColorMunkiDisplay) are still loaded and activated for my dual screen (Dell U2711) configuration. And YES, it is!
  • -Tested PS CC 2018 Print Dialog --> works just fine! (GPU acceleration off)
  • -Switched on GPU acceleration in PS CC 2018, restart PS CC 2018
  • -Tested PS CC 2018 Print Dialog --> works just fine! (GPU acceleration now on. Only OpenCL is switched off)

Conclusion (?): use the Microsoft provided driver updates for your graphics card and it works!

Disclaimer: I do not use/play games, so I can't say anything about missing special AMD adrenaline edition driver support...

I am having problems with AMD  display drivers.

My system configuration: OS Win 10 V1709, Build 16299.309 Intel i7-3820, 3.60GHz, 32 GB RAM, 64 bit,  MSI Twin Frozr VI  AMD Radeon RX 480, 24546 MB graphics RAM 16354 MB shared memory, ASUS P9x9 Pro with UEFI bios and Intel x79 chipset, Epson printer driver for R2400 v6.56
ON1, PS CC, Lightroom CC & photo files are on 1 TB SSD.

Driver 16.300.2311.0  (16.7.2):   Able to print, printer settings work.  Does not freeze.  Unable to initialize or access AMD Radeon Settings application either through Windows menu or through AMD Radeon settings entry in display settings dialog box.  Nothing happens when I click either entry.  ON1 Camera Raw 2018.1.1 does not allow complete use of all tools.  Some work very slowly & hang for 10 seconds.

Driver 17.12.2  :  Photoshop error message  :  Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled enhancements which use the graphics hardware" and features that require graphics hardware are unavailable.

Photoshop settings:  Cache level is currently set to 4, Set to use Graphics Processor, Drawing mode set to Basic or Normal, Cache size set at 75% (23000MB), No change with preference reset or spacebar print combo in file menu.

Driver 18.2.1  :   Unable to print immediately.  Computer freezes immediately after clicking “Print” or “Print one copy” in Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Version: 19.1.2 20180302.r.277 2018/03/02: 1160083  x
After 120 seconds, normal function is restored until clicking on next command when system freezes again for 120 seconds.  I have 2 printers and this issue occurs before I have selected a printer, so it does not appear to be printer driver related.  System freezes again for 120 seconds when print command is pressed in printer dialog box. This occurs 3 times before being able to print.  I am able to print.
Print works with ACDSee Pro 9 64 bit but runs slowly.
Similar slow operation with Microsoft Word 2007 as in ACDSee.
Exiting PS CC in Task Manager restores normal computer & program function
ON1 Camera Raw 2018.1.1 shows 50% increase in speed on tools affected by AMD driver 16.7.2
Able to initialize AMD Radeon settings application and make changes to the application.

Driver 17.10.1  :  Works normally for print command.

Driver 17.10.2  :  Same issues as with Drivers 17.12.2, and 18.3.4 (latest driver)
The problem appears to have developed after introduction of Driver 17.10.1

Current PS CC upgraded today  and problems continue as above.

Driver 18.3.4  :    Current driver  Same issues with 18.2.1.  Able to access AMD Radeon settings Reinstallation of Photoshop CC 2018 Version 19.1.2 made no difference with 18.2.1 AMD driver.

By the way, I saw this problem in CC 2017 and CC 2018.

Maybe you could try to find the driver version 22 instead of 23 in Nvidea web as it seems that the problem is related with version 23. Good luck!
