P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

@JeffreyTranberry I want to know when this issue is fixed. I had to call and trouble shoot with adobe because anytime I made anything  in photoshop  I could not save it... they tried several  things and ended up rolling me back to an older version  which .... is ridiculous  when we pay the kind of money  we pay for this program subscription to have the updated features  and newest version and have to instead  use an old version...

How will we know when it is fixed ??

In Photoshop, I've recently had trouble with saving and exporting. Whenever I attempt to "save as," I receive this message:

"Could not save as because of a program error." When I try to "export as," Photoshop says that an unknown error has occurred. I've searched through this forum for a few hours and have tried to implement past solutions, but nothing has worked. Are these problems connected, or am I dealing with two distinct issues? How should I go about solving these problems? Any advice is appreciated!

This is truly the worst issue... I can barely work on my Photoshop, it's bugging so hard. Any updates on the situation?

I'm experiencing a very similar problem on my macbook Pro 2019 running Bug Sur (11.1) using Photoshop 22.1.  I'd be happy to help by testing a new build.

I duplicated an old project with many layers.  I then created a new layer and added a png to the project with place embedded.  I then rasterized the file.  I was experiencing some problems with the layer being gray, which I solved by turning on "Use Graphics Processor".  I turned on a single one of the old layers.

I was also having the problem where I couldn't see updates when moving layers or zooming.  I could zoom and move the layer if I turned off either the new imported/rasterized layer, or the old one, but not both.  If I zoomed out very far with both turned on, nothing would happen until I got to about 15% when it would show me both layers and allow me to keep zooming out.   I could not zoom back in past just about 15% (though it would scale the rulers and show the percentage get larger.)

I have since reverted to the previous version of photoshop where I have had none of these problems.

I would create a gif, but my preferred gif creating software doesn't run on Big Sur and I haven't found a suitable replacement yet.

I'm also having this problem on a 2019 Macbook pro running Big Sur (11.1).  There are some layers that come from placed (embedded) png file that I rasterized.  I duplicated the rasterized layer and moving it around causes it to become not visible.

I can hide either it or the layer behind it and move things around and it will update with the changes, but not when both are visible.  If I make both layers visible and then zoom out quite far, like below 15%, it will show both layers, but I can't zoom in any more afterwards.

I'd be happy to help gather more information.

I read a comment below that mentioned switching to 16bit/channel instead of 8 and that it helped. This worked for me. As soon as I switched, my layers appeared and I was able to freely zoom, pan, and save.

Hi @JeffreyTranberry and @andrew_sender exact same thing this end.

I was mugged last night for my laptop and in the process of downloading everything on a new machine I bought today and my photoshop is super buggy on 3 layers -- and unable to save -- just like what others have wrote on this chain. I looked at your solution of downloading an older version but that option isn't open to me when I look at my apps and their drop down -- it just says learn more and uninstall.

Hi there Jeffrey Tranberry and Andrew Sender -- exact same problem here. I just had my laptop stolen so bought a new one and have downloaded all the programs again and I can't get photoshop to save a file just as the others on here have reported -- it goes weird with multiple layers and then you can't save.
