P: White squares/Boxes appear

I have been having this annoying problem for several weeks now. None of the solutions on the internet work at all. If this is your first time reading about this problem, these are the solutions I've seen so far (none of them is a real solution, each one causes other problems):

- Uncheck "Use graphics processor" in the performance tab in configuration. Result: It disables the rotating canvas features for Wacom tablets after a couple of minutes or just instantly.
- Check "Deactivate native canvas" and/or "Older GPU Mode (pre 2016)" in technology previews tab. Result: It becomes absurdly lagged, it is useless to work, just moving the canvas makes it go at 1fps.

I also have all my drivers updated (GPU, Windows, Wacom), PS updated, and with priority for the GPU. Is there any real solution for this? I have an RTX 3080 8 GB. This should not happen.

The issue appears EXACTLY the same as this image shows:

(image by @Shiba-Inu - from their post showing the same issue)

Hardware/Software

  • Ryzen 9 5900x w/ PBO on
  • 32GB of RAM @ 3200mhz CL16-18-18-38
  • RX 6950XT 16GB stock, no OC
  • Windows 11 22H2

Photoshop versions tested:

  • 24.7
  • 25.5.1

Drivers tested:

  • PRO 23.Q4
  • Adrenalin 24.2.1
  • Adrenalin 24.1.1

GPU Compatibility:

Noticed behavior:

  • Only appears when using Artboards
  • Enabling Older GPU mode doesn't affect it
  • Deactivating native canvas doesn't affect it either
  • Disabling OpenCL doesn't affect it

How to replicate (easiest method):

  1. Create a new file (in my case, A6 size @ 300ppi = 1748x1240px, sRGB IEC61966-2.1, RGB 8bit)
  2. Create a rectangle (I think I rasterized it)
  3. Add an image in the layer above and make it a clipping mask
  4. Use the eraser to erase a part inside the rectangle
  5. Blocks appear where your eraser strokes are
  6. Stop holding the left mouse button
  7. A bigger block appears where your brush strokes were

Workaround:

Disable GPU Compositing: Preferences > Performance > Advanced Settings (Graphics Processor Settings) > Uncheck GPU Compositing

Photoshop uses D3D12 just fine. As I said, the issue only appears in Artboards. Disabling GPU compositing solved the issue, however, that's a workaround, not a fix. I shouldn't have to disable GPU compositing, potentially slowing myself down... Also, disabling the GPU Acceleration entirely doesn't cut it for me, even if it "works".

@HarvesterOfSorrow_ just tested on my system with an Nvidia RTX 3090 with Photoshop version 25.5.1 on Windows 11 and can't replicate the issue.

Can you post your Photoshop system info, in Photoshop go to Help > System Info, hit the copy button and paste the entire thing into this thread.

I found when using brush (with texture pattern), sometimes the brush stroke will turn out like this. (the preset brushes have no problem)
This brush was made by myself.
This is quite often when I use Photoshop(v25.0.0) in PC (window system), but this didn't happened when I use in Mac (Macbook Pro).

When exporting images in PNG or JPG, random white squares appear throughout the image. Sometimes it happens when merging layers, the image turns into several colored squares. I've already tried closing Photoshop and even uninstalling it, it works for a while and everything comes back again, I've lost several jobs like that.

Hey, @Sergio35305293zbtr. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

I'll move this to discussions for now. Does this happen after a specific series of steps?

Does this happen to the exported images that are out of Photoshop? Or does it happen while the image is still in Photoshop, in the Export As window, or on the canvas?

If it happens while the image is still in Photoshop, try this:
Go to Edit > Preferences (CTRL + K) > Performance > Advanced Settings > Disable 'GPU Compositing' & restart Photoshop & check if it helps.

If it happens after the image is exported, where was the original document stored & what is the export destination? Internal or External drive?

Awaiting to hear from you. Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I'm getting so tired of photoshop because of this bug. With any document I create, in the few minutes after the creation (1 or 2 minutes), I have white squares when I try to erase (or black squares) :

Also, photoshop is getting super laggy and have some Vsync problem, I made a video about it :

https://youtu.be/GE-OKIVPoJQ

Here is my setup :

AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor 3.40 GHz
RAM 64,0 Go

RTX 3090

I have 3 screens, 2x1080 and 1x1440

Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2

And my photoshop settings (french):

I have the latest version of photoshop (v25.4)

I also have the latest version of gaming drivers (v551.23, january 2024). I do not have the studio drivers because I work on Unreal Engine 5 and it has some problems with studio drivers.

My other PC has the issue, with an RTX 2080, I7 and 16 GB of RAM.

I tried almost everything I saw about similar problems, but none of it worked. Nowadays I avoid drawing or editing anything on photoshop because of it.

This problem is a very old one because I already had it from the 2023 version of photoshop. I remember it suddenly appeared and was never really fixed.

If you have a magic fix for me I would be the happiest man in the world.

I'm posting today because it's impossible to work.

Thanks a lot !

@Nelura I have the RTX 3090 and I'm not experiencing the issues you describe, although I use the Nvidia Studio driver as recommended by Adobe, have you tried doing a clean installed of the driver or at least testing the Studio version to see if it helps.

You could try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences as well
https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually
Remember to backup your settings before doing the preference reset
https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

You also mentioned having 3 monitors, are all the monitors plugged into the RTX 3090

@Caru_ Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”. Quit and relaunch PS.

"I've been dealing with this frustrating problem for some time now. Every time I use brushes, text, shapes, etc., this issue arises out of nowhere. Temporarily solving the problem by hiding and unhiding the layer, but as soon as I make any adjustments with the text or brushes, it happens again. Another thing is My PC has 24GB of RAM, a 6500XT GPU, and a Ryzen 5500 CPU, but even with all the updated drivers and the latest version of Photoshop, I still experience lagging and frequent freezing while using the software.
