I have an FM 10 bookfile called BookfileA with 20 chapters. In chapter 1, I set the chapter numbering to start at 1 and the page numbering to start at 1. In chapters 2 through 20, I set the chapter numbering and the page numbering to increment from the previous chapter. So far, so good, but here's the problem. .....In BookfileB, chapter 1 is a different file, and the original chapter 1 is moved to chapter 2. But BookfileB's chapter 2 is still self-resetting its chapter and page numbering to 1.Because of the unusual fact that BookfileB has an extra chapter, do I have to monkey with the chapter numbering every time I want to generate one variant or the other? Is there something about numbering that I don't realize?
probably nothing new here, but in case it helps someone I thought I'd mention a recent and satisfying Aha! moment …I'm working on a (strictly manual) translation of a book with copious end-notes; I set these up in a file of their own with autonumbering, and have now reached the stage of inserting the cross-reference to each note. The way the cross-references list bounces cheerfully back to the top of the file was beginning to depress me, as well as slowing things down – with references like KdR II, 121 and KdR I, 96 (and end-note numbering that restarts in each chapter, and the tardy discovery that the original book has accidental duplicates, omissions and out-of-order end-note numbers …) it was turning into a huge and unencouraging task.Yesterday evening I had a sudden idea. After correctly inserting a cross-reference 54, I copied it – and pasted it where cross-reference 55 needed to be. This meant that I could use it to open the cross-reference targets list and have the focus on 54 i
Basic question about Variables .... It seems that thwe values of Variables are set per file -- am I wrong? So, if the footer of every page of every file in the Book has a variable called <MyBookName>, and certain chapters are used in multiple books with different names, and today's variant of the book is called BookA, do I have to import the value of <MyBookName> into every file, or can I just set "BookA" somewhere and press a button to update and print the book? I prefer not to import "BookA" into every file because ten minutes later, I'm going to generate BookB with a different mix of chapters, and I prefer that the value "BookA" not be inserted into all those chapters. Am I missing something about how Variables are supposed to work?
Has anyone had trouble with Fm12 menubar and toolbar issues lately?I'm running Win 8.1 on vmware Fusion, and noticed when I am in structured Fm, the icons and controls at the top of the page appear to be corrupted.EDIT: I just discovered that the corruption is also in unstructured Fm, so I will post this to the main Fm thread as well.Message was edited by: Matt Sullivan
In this picture, button H toggles the display of files from the file system names to their "display" names.I can right-click a file to change its file system name. How can I change the display name? Thanks.
I usually store all my pictures in one folder locally and import them in the fm files I am developing. Is there any easy way to filter out the pictures that are not used in the book?
This may be an easy one and I'll probably feel stupid when I hear the answer, but here we go-I need to add a solid line at the top and bottom of all the graphics in a book. I also need to add the same lines before and after warning messages. I'm looking for a solution other than drawing each one individually. I have some screen captures to show what I'm talking about. I was assigned this book after it had been started. The person that started it is gone, and I have no idea of what he did. I see that he has placed a line at the top of this graphic frame, and when you hit enter it makes a duplicate. I don't see any changes to paragraph tags as it is just listed as body, and other body text in the document doesn't act this way. Maybe I'm looking at 2 different scenarios as far as the lines for the text and the lines for the graphics.
Hi,I've got an XML application that works w/o problems on FM9 and FM 11, but not in FM 12. If my structapps does not have any preprocessing XSLT, everything works. But if it has, XSLT processor (Xalan used, not Saxon HE), XSLT processor gives me error: java.io.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file: <path_to_source_xml>\dtd_file, so it looks like xalan cannot resolve the public identifier and tries to locate dtd from same folder. I have declared the entity locations with public ID + path\filename in structapps (and uses default API client). What might be wrong? Thanks in advance,Martti
Is there a good, easy way to compile all linked graphics in Frammaker 11 so I can send a book out for translation?
I am new to FM and I inherited a bookfile with 50 component files. Each has 20 conditions available, but it *appears* that only about 5 are ever used.Is there a way to search or generate a report on which Conditions are in use in the book (so I can verify Exactly which conditions are never used)?
Hello, can anyone recommend a good Diff plugin to compare Frame files in SVN? Thanks.Kristen
Hello, When I save as XML, my graphic elements generate image files with several extensions .mif, .jpeg, .gif or others. Is it possible to force an output format?
what is the easiest way to search for blank pages in a booked document version 7
Working with FM 11 I've got a longer text written with an older FM-version with some headings and paragraphes that are not displayed. It's just free space or lines and in some cases it's underlined like misspelled words but the characters are not visible. Paragraph- and character-formats look normal (that is black text on white background) and the text is not conditional. BUT the text is displayed in the Markers-Pod, when I mark a passage and it's even possible to find words in these paragraphs searching for them. I would appreciate any hint, how to deal with this problem.Georg
Hi,I am trying to save FM9 books as pdf files. It works occassionally but fails most of the time - usually at Pageblock 13 each time. The egg timer stops but I still have the "Opening CMM_Pageblock13.fm" showing bottom left. Then when I click on anything within Famemaker to navigate, I get the "Internal Error 9004, 8680130, 7515574, 8121681. FM has detected a serious problem and must quit" error message.I've tried the "save as pdf" and also the "save as" and selecting PDF file.I have gone into Print as a pdf file, clicked on the PDF Setup button, selected set and that also failedI'm using windows 7 Ent with SP1 x64, Adobe FM 9.0p255, Acrobat standard 9.0.0, Acrobat distiller 9.0.Can anyone help? Thanks
Recently, I had to purchase a new computer. Previously, I had FM installed on two PCs -- one using Windows Vista os and the other using Windows 7 os. The Vista computer developed problems and the hard drive had to be reformatted. FM was erased from that computer at that time. I have installed FM on my new computer, but am getting a message that I have reached the maximum number of activations and that if I don't deactivate it on one of my other computers, it will stop working in 30 days. The help files say that Adobe detects when a problem like this happens and an application no longer works on a particular computer, but it hasn't seen this -- perhaps because I couldn't get online after the crash. Who would I contact or what can I do to deactivate the copy that's on the dead computer? Thanks.
How do I move the folder in which imported graphics are stored, without wrecking every file in my Bookfile? I'm new at FrameMaker.
So, I created a condition for a feature that is new to my document and until it's stable, I want to hide that text. No problem. I selected the condition and from the Show/Hide Conditional Text pod, I moved it over to hide. When I created the conditional text, I gave it a background color of gray so I could easily distinguish the conditional text from the non-conditional text. However, if I leave the conditional text visible and go to generate a PDF, the gray background style appears on the conditional text in the PDF. Is there something I'm missing here when it comes to building a PDF? I don't want the style I see in the FM file to appear in the final PDF. I only want that background color as an indicator while I'm editing it. I don't want to have to remember to change the style every time I want to build with the condition visible. Here's a screenshot from the PDF. The bits in gray are what I had applied the condition to.After selecting the book file, I tried both doing a Save as PDF
So, I have a document that I want to conditionalize some sections for. There's section A that has a task list in it followed by section B that also has a task list. I just want to conditionalize section B so that it's not published as the feature it's documenting isn't ready yet.I highlighted the section I want to conditionalize and applied the condition to it (which brings us to the second problem of the defined style not for the condition not displaying but that's of minor importance to the primary issue). Then I go to the Show/Hide conditional text and set the condition to be hidden. This is the result:I now have an additional blank list item where I don't want one. How do I get rid of it?
We are using FrameMaker 12 (unstructured) on a Windows 7 platform.I have created a book whose structure looks like this:Book_____Cover_____TOC_____Chapter 1_____Chapter 2_____Etc. chapterWe are trying to use the standard left and right running headers. The left header = Running H/F 1 = <$paratext[Title]> = Title in the "Cover" file of the book. The right header = Running H/F 2 = <$paratext[Heading 1]> = The chapter name in each "Chapter" file in the book. The right running header populates properly. The left running header is empty. This is what I have tried to troubleshoot:Verified that the title of the book in the cover file is set to a "Title" paragraph tag. (It is.)Saved each file/chapter and updated the book.Tried to force the even page header manually using Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage, but it doesn't stick. The configuration on the Master Page Usage window is the same for even or odd pages:Use Master Page = Right/Left is selected.Apply To = Current Page
Hi,I have a few paragraphs that I need to number as chronological tasks. For it to look readable there needs to be a space between each paragraph. However, when I format the paragraphs as a numbered list, FM9 inserts numbers in the spaces. I have tried all sorts of combinations but cannot fix it.Can anyone help?
I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 8.1. When I installed my FrameMaker 10 application on it, I anticipated it would display the "license has expired" error message, so I downloaded the patch. Unfortunately, the patch isn't updating FrameMaker as it did on my Windows 7 computer. What should I do to make it work in Windows 8.1? Thanks.Janet
Hello everyone,I am using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 SP1 environment.I am working on a training guide in FM. We are supposed to use .5" x .5" icons in the document as visual indicators to instructors on what is supposed to be happening in the training delivery (there are icons for questions, dialog, demonstrations, lab exercises, tips, etc.).I would like to put each icon graphic on the Reference Page, and set it to its own paragraph style. Then, on the Body Page, put the mouse pointer where I would like the graphic, click the icon's style, and have FM bring the graphic from the Reference Page and have it automatically aligned against the left margin with the runaround properties already set.Is there a way to do that?I am only a moderate FM user, so if there is a way to do this, please provide detailed steps.Thank you in advance for any suggestions.Tim
We have a lot of content that includes underscores and when we use the track text edit feature added text is green and underlined. How can I change the properties of the added text to not be underlined?
I ran into this issue earlier this week with one book, and I have suddenly seen it happen with another. We moved from Frame 10 (where all worked fine) to Frame 12. Run an update of the doc, and for some reason, the auto-numbers in the TOC seem to assume that each chapter is only a single page or two pages long. But when you open the chapters they are longer than that. Within the chapter numbering seems to continue fine, until you open the next chapter and it says it's one page beyond the first page of the last chapter. What up, Framemaker? Nothing has changed at the chapter level in these files from when I last ran an update in Frame 10.Anyone else seeing this issue?
