So the original image might or might not have been created with Illustrator? So what you could do: not make a compound path. Gradients can be unified ny just selecting multiple objects and clicking and dragging wiradient tool. When objects are single, then Illustrator does not change the gradient when applying a 3D effect. Generally 3D effects and gradients can be tricky together.

Nothing wrong with the A key. "Adobe" did not change anything. Most likely something has been wrong with your preferences.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I have checked that the artwork layer is selected but the tool is still crossed out for me. By @Brett_Ghost Exactly what are you trying to do using precisely which tool on which artwork? Perhaps trying to draw with the brush tool on a JPG you have opened?

I'm having these same problems, on top of all the other problems I've been having. I've tried everything listed here, including removing all adobe software with the Adobe cleaner tool. Nothing helps. This software just keeps getting worse and worse every year. By @ggreathouse THere is a list with third party software that interferes with Illustrator. Do you run any of that?

At the top there will always be the last used effect. In the Stylize menu is the place where it belongs. It it not a vector based effect. It creates pixels.

Making animated GIFs in Illustrator is a rather fringe use case. And yes, you can export single artboards and piece them together in Photoshop. I think I have a video about that as well: https://youtu.be/uNmIbnuoNx0

The creator has made them all in the file, but then after saving out the single files, the preview wasn't updated correctly. Was it an EPS originally? There was just a hexagon in the file? Something you could easily draw with the polygon tool?

That drop shadow could be a shape blurred with the Gaussian blur affect. To get transparency into there, put another shape on top, apply Opacity = 0, group it with the other items and make that group a kmnockout group.

It would be possible using appearances and Pathfinder effects. But: unfortunately this is not how the Intersect Pathfinder nor the Pathfinder effect of the same name work. They only react when all the shapes overlap in the same area.

THere is a red line even when the object is not selected? Are you sure that you haven't applied a line at group level or layer level? Check Window > Appearance for that.
