Question

Adobe Reader DC becoming unresponsive after highlighting scanned documents??

Hey, I'm having issues with Adobe Reader DC (Version 2017.012.20098)

every time I open a PDF of scanned images to read and highlight through, a few minutes past and there are no issues, then the program freezes, and crashes shortly after if clicked on, if not clicked on it will come back to responding after quite a while, but will then only work for a short period and crash, not having saved my most recent highlight to the document. I will add that these PDF's are being accessed from my Onedrive folder which is constantly syncing with the cloud drive, but I have attempted to open a PDF and work on it locally and the same issue occurred.

I am running on a windows 10 laptop with the latest updates, SSD, 8GB of RAM and i5-450M CPU.

I see several other threads with the same issue when highlighting scanned images (PDF format) that have not been rectified:

Re: Why does Acrobat Pro DC freeze when highlighting?

Help! Acrobat DC periodically freezes when I am highlighting a PDF document.

Freezing when "freehand" highlighting

Freezing while highlighting documents

I am a fan of Adobe Reader DC and would love to be able to use it at ease... How do I fix this?

Dear Jordanf,

While I appreciate your above comment and promise to investigate this problem over 4 months ago, this problem persists.  I regularly use Acrobat Pro DC to review, highlight and add comment boxes to pdf documents usually from scans sent to me by others.  The program crashes so often right after a highlight or comment box was added to the document, I have begun clicking the save button after almost every highlight I make.  This problem makes using the program very frustrating, especially when I have gotten focused on the document and forget to save it frequently.  If the program would autosave documents I am working with like Microsoft Word does every time, I would not lose my changes and have to re-enter them and save.  I just noticed that this note was autosaved last at 11:58 = now.  Why does the program not auto-save like this?????

This is a nonsense problem that many users are experiencing.  I have followed every online advice tip I can find and nothing changes.  I am looking for a better program to use for reviewing PDF documents.  To quote a now famous individual, "Very sad!!!"

I firstly apologise to all the people I have tagged in this discussion, but I feel that it would be great for an Adobe representative to step in and see what the customers are struggling with and give some sort of response, What do you say Adobe? Hi Jordanf,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

A similar issue has already been reported and is under investigation. Would you please share some sample pdf files using which you are able to reproduce the issue?

If possible, you may use Adobe Send to share those files with us: How to share a file using Adobe Document Cloud If the files are sensitive in nature you may share the link via private message with me: How Do I Send Private Message

Will be waiting for your response.

I have the exact same problem. Acrobat Reader freezes and needs rebooting after using the highlighting tool a few times.

This is super irritating and frustrating. Why hasn't this problem been fixed ages ago, Adobe?!!

This problem was posted almost 2 years ago - is there still no solution??   Please provide a workaround. As stated in other posts over the past 2 years, this is VERY frustrating and time-consuming.  I need to highlight text in PDF files, but using this function causes Acrobat to freeze.

I've used Acrobat for years, but I just started having this problem today.  I'm using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 2017.012.20098 on Windows 7 Home Premium, service pack 1.

Thank you

I'm also having this problem. Some of the PDFs are allowed to have highlighting and others are not. I have checked the security on the documents and all permit commenting. Frustrating!!  Is there nobody at Adobe looking at this? i have version  2017.012.020098   as well.
