Question

Will Bridge 13.0.4 have a proper "File > New Window" like Bridge 12 does?

@Mohit Goyal closed comments on the Adobe Bridge Beta is now available (13.0.3.686) topic for some reason or I would have posted there... they mentioned "we are hearing your requests about reintroducing Multiple Bridge windows", but said that's not in the 13.0.3 beta... so I just wanted to confirm that "Multiple Bridge windows" is in fact what people are asking for: the SAME EACT functionality Bridge 12 had (and has had for literally 10+ years before that) with it's "File > New Window" feature (or most of us just press Apple/Command/Control + N on the keyboard).

The main difference between 12's "New Window" feature (and every version before for YEARS) is how you get a COMPLETE new Bridge window. You can not only see your thumbnail images, but you can browse the Folder tree on the left, see the metadata panel, etc. etc. etc. – it has absolutely full usability of features.  Bridge 13 completely and utterly butchers this. There is NO "New Window" feature, only a "Multiple Content Panels" feature, were you ONLY have a "content" window with thumbnails - nothing else, no way to browse other folders or see metadata or anything. Nearly useless for the avid photo editor who actually uses Bridge.

So is the above what @Mohit Goyal is talking about when they say "Multiple Bridge windows"? -- just wanted to confirm as this is a HUGE deal for many of us (and why so many people are continuing to use Bridge 12 instead of the broken Bridge 13).

Also wanted to mention that even if people DID want to try Bridge v13/2023 for some of it's new features, while of course HAVING to also have Bridge v12/2022 running at the same time (as we can't live without that 'New Window' feature) –– we can NOT do that anymore. Adobe removed the ability to run two different years of Bridge at the same time. This is different than in the past, they did this on purpose for some reason. Thankfully I can still run multiple different versions of Adobe programs like InDesign for example; commonly needed when working on files for clients who haven't upgraded... (or like when Illustrator had .DXF import borked for 2+ years...).

Last, a sidenote I hope they also fix: In Bridge 13's Folder panel, they took away the ability to quickly double-click on a folder's name to expand it, so you can see the sub-folders inside. For 10+ years before you could click ANYWHERE on the folder name and it expanded. It was SUPER fast, you didn't have to be precise, just double-click anywhere on the long folder name and it expanded... I literally do this, no kidding, THOUSANDS of times a day (work under FDA perview so all files have to be perfectly catalogued under job numbers a certain way... TONS of folder structure everywhere).

In Bridge 13 you now have to precisely click the itty-bitty ">" symbol, and that symbol only. Sounds like a stupid little thing I shouldn't even be complaining about, right? This little thing literally kills my productivity. Those few extra seconds needed to be so precise to click on that super small symbol, multiplied by thousands of times a day – I did the math: it's literally an extra half hour+ to my day. This is an example of how a super small feature, when Adobe changes it for NO logical reason, can hurt productivity, hurt their customers.

Hi, @Dochartaigh, I'd like to make a few updates and corrections to your comments.

In your first paragraph, you state that Bridge has had multiple windows for 12+ years. To be exact, that's 18 years. I've been using it every day over those years.

In your second paragraph, you state that you cannot browse folders or see anything. This implies that you never learned how to use the multiple Tabs. At the very bottom of this response, I will provide a quick synopsis of how I find this new workflow significantly more efficient. Is it perfect? Of course not. Does it satisfy multiple computer monitors? Absolutely not. Will I welcome the return of multiple windows? Of course. I'll take any and everything I can get! (LOL)

3rd Paragraph. Yes, it's coming

4th Paragraph. Bridge has NEVER EVER been able to run with multiple copies of Bridge. You ALWAYS had to quit one to open another. This is from Bridge V. 1 to now. Period, end of the story. There is no evil conspiracy here.

5th Paragraph. I've never been a fan of the Folder Panel, so I did not know you could do that. Please make a Feature Request at https://adobebridge.uservoice.com/

6th Paragraph. I've not noticed an issue, but please, while you are at https://adobebridge.uservoice.com/, add that as a Feature Request.

One thing you may not be aware of, but Adobe did a complete rewrite of Bridge. The code was mostly 18 years old and was patched beyond the beyond. This new application is more easy to fix, to add, to embellish. But, it was done on a big hurry and with limited engineers. They had to get something out by MAX. Beginning, middle, and end. This was a mess created from upper management and/or marketing; take your pick.

Oh, one more thing: I do not work for Adobe. I prowl around these forums to see if I can help folks. There are several of us around here, all are volunteers. Our voices are no louder than yours so when we ask for things, they get placed in the same cue as yours, or anyone elses' request. But, I've been around these forums for a long time and I do have a reasonable idea of what's going on. Yes, it's been a cryin' shame what happened to Bridge. But NEVER EVER think that there's a bunch of engineers sitting around playing games on their computer. They are working their a**es off trying to get a Great program even better.

And as promised, here's some general guidelines of how to use the Content Tabs. Trust me, you are NOT obligated to use any of these, but you might get some ideas from what I have presented below that will work for you. And if you come up with a variation on what I have below that works well for you, please share it. It may help others.

The new workflow

If you look at the Content Panel, note the hamburger menu on the right-hand side (three horizontal lines). To the left of the Hamburger menu, you'll see a plus (+) (red arrow). If you click on that, you'll get a new Content Panel. If you click on the option in the Hamburger menu for a new Content Panel (green arrow), you'll also get a new Content Panel.

The primary disadvantage of these two options currently is that either will default to a "home" position and are not likely to provide access to the folder you want. Fortunately, for any Content Panel that is active (note the blue square and blue line circling the Panel), if you go to the Recent icon in the icons on top, if you select a folder from there, it will open up in that Content Panel.

Likewise, you can select a folder from the Folders Panel. In addition, if you take an image or a folder and drag it to the Bridge icon in the Dock, THAT folder will open in the active Content Panel. Hopefully, soon they will provide both "Open" and "Recent" options in the Hamburger menu.

If you have a folder with other sub-folders, you can always right-click on one of the subfolders, and it can be opened in a new Content Panel

Once you have two or more Content Panels, you can drag from one to the other by simply mouse-down on an image (or all selected images), then move the mouse up to the title area of the other Content Panel to make it the active Panel and release. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE before you do anything, then Comand/Control-z and you'll be good. BTW, if you see a blue line around a Content Tab, that means that that is the Active Tab.

Note also that extra Content Panels can be placed and/or moved to any other location in the Bridge window.

I hope this explains some of the new workflows available to you.

Please excuse me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you understood me correctly. Your directions show how to ONLY make another "Content" panel instance, correct? Which you can then drag or pop-out to a 2nd monitor, right? I totally know about that, and that is the EXACT "new feature" that has butchered my (and MANY others) workflow...

So to reiterate, and show an example (not just for you, but for @Mohit Goyal too - to make sure we're talking about the same thing), in the newest Bridge v13/2023 your main/monitor #1 (on left) will have a FULLY capable Bridge window - you'll not only have the Content Panel, but you can have the Folder Panel, Metadata Panel, Publish Panel, Keywords Panel etc. etc. (heck, the default "Essentials" Workspace has 10x panels nestled in there!). ––– Then in comparison, your monitor #2 (on right) can ONLY have the Content Panel, right? It is MISSING the ability to add any of those other panels (Folder, Metadata, Publish, Keywords, etc. etc.) to that, correct? So it'll look like this:

With Bridge v12/2022 (and you said 18 years previously!) you have WAY more options. WAY more flexibility. You can have two FULLY featured Bridge windows by going "File > New Window". BOTH of them, on BOTH monitor #1 and #2, can each have a Content Panel, Folder Panel, Metadata Panel, Publish Panel, Keywords Panel, etc. etc. etc. These can be totally customized to whatever you want!  Like this:

This ability to have all those different panels, on multiple monitors at once is what Adobe butched in the newest Bridge. You lose SO much functionality here it's not even funny (I could give 50+ workflow examples this demolishes, but to start I can't even compare two different photos metadata at the same time anymore since you can only have one single "Metadata Panel" now).

This literally makes the new Bridge unusable. Makes me only use the 2022 (Intel based) version on my brand new Mac M2... Makes me look into Affinity, Capture One, or DxO to see if they have some alternate photo viewer program I can use instead of my go-to combo of Bridge/LrC/Photoshop... because if future versions of Bridge are going to be like this, I can't use it and I'm out...

Anyway, I was going to fortify how I'm not alone in my position by posting a bunch of links to similar posts, but when I started gathering those links I saw you posted on several of them... so you're more than aware about this exact issue (making the example images I made above a moot point... but I'll leave them in case Mohit still needs this type of clarification about the exact feature we desperately need/want added back into Bridge).

P.S. Again, PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong with the above - I'm ALWAYS looking to learn something new!!!
