I kept getting this problem with my Adobe Acrobat reader.  I tried to repair and even reinstall but it keeps coming up. Not sure if it has anything to do with recent Windows updates. I am using Windows 10 64bit.

Help!

Just to chime in (hello everyone by the way!):

I have also been seeing it - Acrobat Reader DC x64 - on two different machines, and along the same timelines as this thread:

1. Personal (home) PC with Windows 10 (home)

2. Old work laptop (Surface) with Windows 10 (corporate)

Two above machines had had all updates/upgrades in place, latest version of Adobe Reader DC x64 installed etc.

Registry trick worked on my work laptop, had not deployed it on home PC as I was awaiting proper fix.

Interestingly,

Hi there,

The new version 23.08.20555 of Acrobat is now available addressing the fix for the issue.

Please update the application from the help menu > check for updates and reboot the computer once.

You may also download the patch manually from the link https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html

It's not getting any better and the time invested is crazy! And I'm paying monthly for the product. Live support didn't solve a thing.

i don't understand why anyone here is paying anything.  it's still a problem that adobe's free reader isn't working for everyone, but a number of posters here are looking for solutions in the wrong place.

this thread is devoted to adobe acrobat reader.  users paying for a product are probably using for adobe acrobat pro and should be posting in the acrobat forum, not the acrobat reader forum.

thank you for pointing that out!

I use Pro and it started happening after the most recent update. When I did a search for the error message, it sent me to this forum and I didn't even notice. DOY!!

Off I go to post there, too

yes.

and for others: if you have an acrobat pro issue, post in the acrobat (not acrobat reader) forum.

Seems like the problem is the same for both the reader and Acrobat.  It may be more effective to have one concentrated location for the problem/solution rather than monitoring two separate threads.

you should not install acrobat pro and reader on the same computer.  if you need both (eg, to create/edit pdfs and then test with reader), use different computers.

if you have both installed on the same computer, that may be the problem.

This is incorrect. Adobe Pro and Reader has run on the same machines for quite some time without error. Something has changed that is causing the problem, which is program specific. It would be nice if support had a specific ticket on this error as it appears to be happening to a multitude of users.

I received an automatic Adobe update this morning and so far it has solved the problem regarding the constant popup "Acrobat quit unexpectadly.  Click Learn more for possible fixes."  If you do not have automatic updates, you may want to check if an update is available.  The version I have now of Adobe Acrobat (not reader) is 2023.006.20320.  Fingers crossed this problem is now solved permanently.

thanks for the update @Fred325198888kqs.

for others you can check for an update, but be aware that adobe rolls out updates to different users at different times.

As far as I know 2023.006.20320 has been out for sometime (before the Windows 10/11 September Update). It is not a new version.

I swear there was an update because Adobe created a new icon on my desktop.  Unfortunately, the error has returned after coming back from lunch.  Bummer- thought this was behind me.

Finally I succeed to get a dump file, with this method
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/collect-logs-crash-freeze.html
But once again, I'm not sure that Adobe will learn anything beacause there is NO CRASH, NO FREEZE.

Ok, so now, where do I need to send this 116Mb file ?!

This has been bugging me for a couple weeks now and I think I finally got it to stop. Disabling Explorer thumbnails was out of the question for me, so I was resigned to just deal with ther error. Decided to try one last thing...

In the preferences under the General section, I changed the "Touch Mode" to never and then I changed the "Scale for screen resolution (restart required):" to No Scaling.

I'm not sure which of these two settings fixed it, but it has not triggered the error box when opening a PDF since enabling these settings.

A while back, touch mode got enabled on my Illustrator install and I could not get used to it. Noticed that this setting was set to Auto in Acrobat and figured it couldn't hurt to just disable it completely. Then I noticed the scaling option and disabled that too.

Just a happy accident, really. I frequently have to open several PDFs at a time, so having to close several of these boxes every time was getting really old.

I just tested the settings, it looks like it's just the Scaling setting that's causing this. I changed touch mode back to auto-detect and left the scaling to No Scaling and everything is still working correctly.

Just to add. I had tried everything listed here with no change. I even uninstalled all of my Adobe products, ran the cleaner, rebooted, and reinstalled Acbrobat fresh by itself with default settings. As soon as I enabled thumbnails and double clicked a PDF... error box. Such a strange bug.

Tried this and still got the unexpected quit just now.

I'll stick w/ just disabling that thumbnails checkbox (Windows Explorer previews still for me work w/ that turned off, just that "previous page" up arrow is grayed out at the bottom of the preview pane).

Thank you! You are a hero!

The update with the new look was annoying enough with all the tools that used to be in one place suddenly scattered all over 😉 (at least for me).

Thank you so much for posting this valuable solution!!!!

Is this still working for you?

I tried setting "Touch Mode" to "Never" and "Scale for screen resolution (restart required):" to "No Scaling". Not long after restart the error popped up again.
