Background Removal Tool Not Working on iOS

New Here ,
Jun 02, 2025 Jun 02, 2025

I’m experiencing a recurring issue with the Background Removal tool in the Adobe Express app on my iPhone. When I try to remove the background from an image, the app hangs for a while (appears to be processing), but eventually returns an error screen. This happens consistently, regardless of which image I use.

I’ve already tried the following:

  • Force quitting and relaunching the app
  • Restarting my iPhone
  • Deleting and reinstalling the app
  • Testing with different images
  • Checking for updates (both iOS and Adobe Express are fully up to date)

Device details:

  • iPhone model: iPhone 14 Pro
  • iOS version: iOS 18.5
  • Adobe Express version: v28.1.0

Does anyone know of a workaround or fix for this issue? I use this feature regularly, so I’d love to get it back up and running.

Hi @Emmaleen22723592n8uh,

Thanks for reaching out, and we're sorry for the trouble — we know how frustrating it is when a key feature like Background Removal stops working.

Here are some additional steps that may help resolve the issue:

  1. Sign out and back into your Adobe account in the app – this can refresh account permissions and features.

  2. Clear app cache (if available) by going to iOS Settings > Adobe Express > toggle any reset/clear options or switch off/on background app refresh.

  3. Switch internet connection – try moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa), as Background Removal relies on cloud processing.

  4. For this one task, use Adobe Express via Safari or Chrome on your iPhone instead of the app—the web version sometimes handles processing better.

  5. Disable Low Power Mode — this can sometimes affect background processing tasks.

If the issue persists, we’d be happy to take a closer look — feel free to share a test file or screen recording, and we’ll forward it to our engineers.

Thanks again for your patience — we’re here to help!
