P: Support additional flavors (non iOS) of HEIC, HIF, HEVC for Import

Explorer ,
Nov 18, 2020 Nov 18, 2020

Adobe get with the program.  I tried importing *.HIF files today from my EOS R5 and Lightroom Classic doesn't even show them in the import window.  They can't be imported.  I can import iPhone *.HEIF files but not from the EOS R5.  Adobe's lack of support for import and export of *.HEIF files is pathetic

What is the status of canon hif files in Lightroom and photoshop? Thx

Hi everyone,

I was pretty amazed today when realizing that HEIF images shot with camera (no Apple I-device) won't be read, nor being seen by LrC 11.4.1; neither on Windows 10 nor on MacBook M1 with MacOS 12. The camera is a Fuji X-H2s.

When will there be native HEIF image format support in Lightroom Classic / ACR available?

Kind regards, Thomas

P.S.: I chose "technical problem" for this post, because for me it is one, since HEIF is not a brand new and totally unknown format.

It is September 7, 2022 and Lightroom still does not support HEIF files from Sony cameras. Nor Canons HEIF files. Unbelievable!

To me this is crazy. HEIC is so much better I can't believe why Adobe does not want to support it from the cameras we use (let's not count iPhone)

Bonjour,

@Rikk Flohr: Photography

OK, lets try a different tack.

Rikk, why does LightRoom still not support Canon HIF files?

That was the answer I gleaned from Canon's discussion site. Sorry it didn't work for you.

That being said, I have since downloaded sample HIF files from both an R5 and an R6, and, although the weren't recognized by Photoshop as HIF, renaming them to HEIF allowed them to open, albeit converted to 8-bit, and not through Camera Raw as they really aren't Raw files anyway. The CR3 raw files provided opened in Camera Raw perfectly of course.

I'm not on Ventura yet, so maybe it's an OS-specific issue? I was able to open them even in older versions of PS in Monterey.

Anyway, there was also a discussion (sorry I can't find the thread link for this) about Canon being very slow to provide Adobe with specs to their specific "HIF" format, unlike Sony that had provided theirs early on. Apprently it's different enough that it has been an issue (obviously). So who the bad guy is here is not exactly clear.

I'm guessing the 10-bit issue might be a bigger hurdle, since PS doesn't work in it?

Please add support for Canon´s HIF files on Windows machines. Every new Canon has that format. Please don´t force us to use that darned Canon Photo Professional software.

Oh, no problem, Brad - but it was safe to assume that we've already tried "easy" fixes like changing file externsions.

Still Adobe - they could tell us that's the cause of the delay, instead of ignoring the whole issue...

Since a few days I am the owner of a Fuji XT-5.
I work with LR-Classic 12.01 and PS 24.01.
The hif format is not recognized by both applications.
On my iMac these files are displayed without any problems.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Is the problem known?

Lack of support for a file type doesn't actually qualify as a bug, but could be a request in Ideas, using the format described in this post:

Only camera Adobe supports for that format are Apple phones.

Recommend you go back into your X-T5 and put that setting back to JPEG.

For those not familiar with the X-T5, or another brand providing that format, it is an option for raster images, JPEG or HIF. the RAW is still RAF. Also, the X-T5 saves it as .hif in camera. If you transfer to the computer via USB from camera they get renamed, if you transfer from SD card reader, you need to rename them (from hif extension to heic extension)

More than 2 years later I cannot open HIF files from a Canon R5.

What the hell Adobe?     Ideally in Lightroom Classic (latest as of today) on Mac OSX on M1 Max MBP.

Android is a non-iOS flavor.

We deserve much better than that, Rikk.

The content of the post is absolutely nothing to do with Android, and everything to do with the Canon R5.

I don't think we're being unreasonable in expecting you to read and respond to the question, not just ignore it in favour of hiding behind a non-answer and pretending that the subject line is all there is.

@Keith Reeder

From the post you quoted:
"When updates are available for additional camera manufacturers they will be posted here."

I will add this sentence to the pinned post for clarity.
That information has not changed.
