Just how greedy is Adobe? [branched]

You answer explains detailed technicalities and does not address the fact that Adobe is not affordable for people with limited income.

Your gym argument makes it even worse! who exactly said that what the gym does is okay or even acceptable?

I am a student and I don't have time to take advantage of a paid subscription all the time, which makes me pay for even the time that I am not even using the product.

This trend of paid subscription is obnoxious and there will be a time when people will find an alternative.

I understand that you are employed of Adobe and you are not going to answer with a reasonable answer (at least from the angry consumers perspective not from Adobe's).

AGAIN! preventing the consumers from activating older versions of your products (argumentatively because you stopped the Support!) is the worst Adobe has done.

I have no idea if Adobe going to figure out a better way to gain the leaving customers back again and STOP the madness of subscription plans to a paid stand alone programs, but I just want to say that I regret using Adobe's products ever since it ended up this way.

the fact that in this modern time that we are still arguing the renting (instead of buying) policy that Adobe is screwing us with instead of setting the focus on creativity makes me wonder what **** is the future of this industry going to be.

Thanks but no thanks Adobe.

Nope! Jane is a user, earning her living with the tools Adobe provides and helping in her free time and voluntary other users when they have a problem with the software.

As she is doing a great job with this, Adobe recognised her as an ACP. ACPs and MVPs are standard users with deep knowledge of Adobe products.

Nope. When you have a licensed older product from before the subscription model, you are still welcome to use that according to the licensing terms. There is, however, no support anymore and there are no updates any more. Activation is still possible for down to any single version. However, for obvious reasons, some activation servers needed to be taken down and so, to be able to activate very old products you need to contact Adobe: Contact Customer Care !

You may be unhappy with the current situation but fact is that Adobe is doing well with it's current business model and companies like mine are also happy with the subscription model. We expanded all our four initial licenses to the all apps CC subscription. Before we had different licenses for different tasks, requiring to change the Workstation for eg small video editing jobs. In addition we added to more licenses, because it's economical and easy to do.

I understand that some people have problems paying the full price for the Adobe programs and that especially students may have a hard time paying for this, but also the perpetual licenses were not cheap. A full Photoshop license did cost around 1000$ some ten years ago.

Yes, it's not cheap. But Adobe tools are the top tools used in the industry. There are alternatives if you do not do this for a living. But anyone professional needs at least some tools from Adobe, because they are the industry standard.

Hi Max,

In addition to what Abambo wrote, you can get student pricing since you are a student. There is special pricing for the first year.  Details here:

I know it is a cliche but Adobe has had something close to a monopoly in this market for a while now. You can compare the price of the CC apps to the last version of CS. I am not sure what it used to be but let's take the price they currently have on their website. The price for all apps under CS 6 is £794 (UK).

If you assume that a user would update his programs once every five years, that would mean the all app subscription for CC of £49.94 / month would cost £2996.4 over the same period, a price increase of 277% above the CS6 cost. Not bad for Adobe.

I don't have a huge problem with Adobe raising its prices or charging something of a premium for being the industry standard. +277% seems very greedy however and I have not seen evidence that this money is being efficiently reinvested in updates, modernisation or new features.

Adobe is starting to fall behind cheaper competitors in some areas and apps have not seen many significant updates since the new pricing model. I have not had a detailed look into how Adobe is run but I would guess this is a management decision to milk Adobe's market position as aggressively as they can for the benefit of shareholders and by extension management. You can understand the temptation for a senior manager who stands to make tens of millions of dollars by such a move. Ultimately Adobe is abandoning it's customers though. They are still the best but the time to jump ship from Adobe to other software is getting close in my option. Unless you are working for a big company, you can achieve most of what Adobe can do for much less and in many cases for free.

Don't complain to Adobe because they are only going to take notice if customers move away in significant numbers. Just move. For senior managers, it is all in the numbers at the end of the day.

I would very much like to see where all the extra money is going, if anyone knows. Hopefully, they are at least spending some on bringing a better service to customers.

Where did you get that mistaken idea?  Adobe did not stop your ability to use older versions if you wish.   Older products need older computers to run.   If your computer is new and your software is old, you probably have a disconnect because of the new computer, not because of anything Adobe did.

Which perpetual licensed version of Creative Suite do you have?

And which operating system are you using?

PS We don't work for Adobe.  We are mostly product users just like you .
