Did you purchase a monthly plan that can be cancelled without penalty or an annual plan, paid monthly, with an annual commitment? You didn't say. The annual plans are deeply discounted from the monthly plans, and there is a fee for early termination.
Deleting the account and having an empty card do not release you of your commitment. This page has details covering all scenarios:
