Arrow keys dismiss File menus on mac os

Enthusiast ,

This is getting really annoying

lately illustrator save/link/finder menu dialogues get dismissed when using the arrow keys. example Open File, opens the finder dialogue window, i click on a folder, i press arrow keys to navigate around folders but instead the menu closes.

same things happens when trying to rename in the name field. example, Save. finder menu comes up, i put the cursor in the name, say i want to navigate to the start of the name field, i press command+left arrow. menu closes.

this doesn't happen on other adobe apps i use - photoshop and indesign.

Please tell us your version and system.

When was the last time you rebooted the computer?

Did you already try and reset the preferences? This will erase all your settings, so you might want to rename the preferences  folder to do it.

I have the latest Illustrator build on MacOS Monterey (12.5.1) and am not expericing the same issue using the arrow keys to move through the menus and submenus nor the issue with using cmd+arrow in the save dialog.

It sounds like it might be a Ventura issue. Illustrator has not released a Ventura based version yet so there may be some bugs.

This is a bug in Ventura indeed. It happens in After Effects and Premiere Pro just as well. Using the arrow keys and a few other rarely used special keys knocks out file dialogs. The way I understand it (not a Mac guy, I only read about this stuff) it has to do with Apple's new quick navigation not being compatible with Adobe apps (or vice versa if you prefer).

Hi @mecdos,

Sorry for the delayed response. This seems like unexpected behavior. Would you mind running the app in safe mode and checking if the same behavior is happening? Also, would you mind turning on Accessibility Keyboard (on-screen keyboard for macOS) and checking which keys are getting pressed when menu dialogues are getting dismissed?

Please share your observation with us. We'll be looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Anshul Saini

Usine the Accessibility Keyboard causes the same error.  Impossible to navigate quickly and has a negative impace on the speed with which I can edit and manage files.  I am having this issue in Premeire Pro 23 and PS 24.0.1 on Ventura 13.2

LATEST

Hi @Abevco,

It appears that you're using Adobe Illustrator version 26.3.1, and you've encountered an issue where pressing arrow keys dismisses menu dialogues. As Monika said, we typically focus on providing updates and fixes for the latest version of Illustrator, which is currently version 27.9.

To address this specific issue, I recommend considering an update to the latest version of Illustrator (version 27.9). Many issues and bugs are addressed and fixed in newer versions, and this problem might have been resolved in the latest release.

If you decide to update, make sure to back up your work and preferences before doing so. You can usually update your software through the Creative Cloud application.

If you encounter this issue in the latest version or need further assistance, please provide more details about your system and workflow, and we'll try to help you troubleshoot. Also, you can try running the app in Safe Mode and see if that helps (MacWindows).

Thank you for reaching out, and I hope this information helps.

Best,

Anshul Saini

You might want to post that to the After Effects forum. https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/ct-p/ct-after-effects?page=1&sort=latest_replies&filter...
