InDesign 20.1 crashing while closing documents.

Contributor ,
Jan 27, 2025 Jan 27, 2025

Immediatly after installing the latest InDD release, the app began crashing randomly, specially after saving and closing a document.
This happens 4 out 5 times, which means I'm constantly having to re-open the app.
InDD was already displaying several performance issues in the previous releases, but this is more than I can take.

Hi everyone,

A quick update on this is that the product team has logged a bug for this issue and is currently investigating it.

The team has suggested few workarounds to test the issue in:

1. Revert to InDesign 20.0 (via Creative Cloud > InDesign > Other Versions)
2. Test the latest InDesign PreRelease build – You can access the PreRelease build by following this blog:
How to Join the Creative Cloud PreRelease Program

Please test the issue in both versions and let us know if the crash still

Hi @DaddyDoom,

Glad to hear things have been a bit more stable after the reinstall, but sorry that the crashes are still happening. You might want to test this on the latest 20.2 release as well. There have been reports of crashes when closing files in 20.2, but some users have confirmed that the issue is related to the Typeface app. As a workaround, try disabling Typeface(if using) and continue working in 20.2.

Let me know if you use Typeface or not! Looking forward to your update.

I just started experiencing these crashes on March 30, 2025. Every time I close all documents, InDesign crashes. Every time. I do use Typeface so I'm going to start troubleshooting there. If the conflict is with Typeface and I have to disable it, that's pretty paralyzing to my entire workflow.

I assume you're using InDesign 20.2. If so then roll back to 20.1 (Creative Cloud app > InDesign > Other Versions menu). The problem only started in InDesign 20.2.

Hi @artichoked,

Thanks for jumping in and sharing your experience. Adding to what Leo suggested, this issue you're encountering is a known one, and it's been reported here: UserVoice Bug Report

There’s also a similar thread on this in the community that might sound familiar: Community Thread – Crash after Export to PDF and Closing File

The good news is that a fix has been included in the InDesign PreRelease build v20.3.0.033 and above. Could you please check if the issue is resolved on your end after updating?

If you already have access to PreRelease builds, you can install the latest version from the “Prerelease” section in the Creative Cloud Desktop app. If you don’t see that option yet, you can apply to join the InDesign PreRelease program here:  https://www.adobeprerelease.com/beta/C6DFA254-C40C-4EEB-8F6D-F4AEDA2E6171

Let me know how it goes after testing on the latest build. Let me know once you tried it.

Hi Alberto, the latest version is 1.0.75; if you could try it out and let us know how that affects the behavior that would be very helpful for us!

Just to verify: what are your current InDesign and macOS versions?

Try to revert to an earlier version of InDesign 2025 (Creative Cloud app, find InDesign, then Other Versions menu). Will it make a difference?

For now ir has been a bit more stable, since I uninstalled and re-installed the app.
Still happens though.

Hello.
I don't use the Typeface app, just the standard native Font Book app from Apple.
Most fonts I'm using are Adobe fonts, aside from a few exceptions.
Lets see how this goes.
Already understood that most of this is related to the fact that I'm using a 2015 iMac, so i'm already looking into getting a new machine. This one did well for many years but it's time to move on.
Thanks for caring.
