InDesign Review Panel Automatically Filters to 'Resolved' Comments When Editing Text

I am often working on documents with multiple review sessions. The problem that occurs since the latest updates of InDesign is that as soon as I put the cursor in a piece of text which previously had a comment attached to it which is resolved, all resolved comments pop up in the comments panel and I cannot see the current comments: all comments are immediately filtered to 'resolved'. Of course I can switch off the filter for resolved comments again, but it switches back again to 'resolved comments' as soon as I start working on the text. This is driving me nuts, because it is not only annoying, it becomes very difficult to work on the unresolved comments and takes up a lot of time. As a work around I now have to open the online document with the current unresolved comments to track down what actually still needs to be resolved. Please help!

What version of InDesign?
What OS and version please?

Have you tried any standard fixes

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

--

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

@Eugene TysonI use InDesign version 19.4 on Windows 11 version 23H2.

I don't know what you mean with 'standard fixes'.

Saving the document with a new name will delete the connection with the (old) review comments so that is the opposite of what I want. FYI: I have this issue with all documents that contain multiple review sessions with different comments attached to the same item or text.

Pressing Shift+Ctrl+Alt does not do anything...

Hi @NOcreationsBE ,

Hope you're doing well!

We would like to know if your issue is resolved after following our expert advice or if you need further assistance on the issue. If yes, could you please tell us if it's happening with all files or with a specific file? Does that happen with the file created in the 19.4 version or with old version file?

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

@HARSHIKA_VERMAit is not resolved yet, because I did not have the time to read and try the comprehensive list that Eugene suggested. Also, to be honest, it seems quite illogical that this issue has anything to do with InDesign settings, so I am not very motivated to try this time consuming idea. If I am wrong, please explain to me how deleting InDesign settings will influence the way that online review comment filters work.

Hi @HARSHIKA_VERMA , thank you for your understanding and your willingness to provide personal support. I have completed the document I had this problem with over 2 weeks ago and all comments have been resolved, so it is no longer good to use as an example. As soon as I run into this problem again with a new document, I will definitely contact you. However, I'm not quite sure how to do that through the 'contact us' link in your post, as it doesn't lead to a form or anything that I can contact you with.

@HARSHIKA_VERMAsorry for the misunderstanding: the problem is not resolved, only the comments in my document are 'resolved' (aka: I made the changes they requested in the design), so there are no unresolved comments left that I can use to show the issue with the filtering. I will get back to this when it happens again, because I need a document with multiple feedback rounds, with some resolved ands some unresolved comments on the same text or object for that. I could create one myself, but at the moment I am too busy with urgent assignments to do that.

@HARSHIKA_VERMA, The problem came upo again today. I have no time to keep unresolved comments unresolved, but that is actually not necessary to show the issue. The fact is that the filter automatically switches to 'Resolved' when you start to edit a piece of text that has a prior comment to it, which is resolved. In short: touching a 'resolved item' automatically switches on the filter to everything Resolved. That makes it impossible to work with new comments on the same text, because these comments disappear as soon as you start editing (perhaps needless to say: because the filter switches to resolved comments). I added a short screen recording to show what happens. Because I have no unresolved comments, it doesn't seem to be a big deal, but imagine you do have them...

Hi @Brecht26342117zh1e,

Thank you for reaching out. We're checking this internally with our product team and will provide you with an update as soon as possible.

In the meantime, could you please share a screen recording of your workflow leading up to the issue? Also, please confirm the version of InDesign you're using and the details of your operating system.

Thank you for your patience.

Best,
Abhishek Rao

Hello @Brecht26342117zh1e

I appreciate your patience. We checked the issue with the product team, and they confirmed that this is ‘as designed’ behavior right from the start. i.e., Touching a resolved item will apply a filter to show all the resolved comments.

Please let me know if you have any queries.

Thank you,

Abhishek Rao

Hi @Abhishek Rao

Is there an option to turn that behavior off? I have a working document that continues to be updated over time. We have hundreds of comments after a while, and it is difficult to work with if I have to turn off resolved comments every time I need to make an additional change.

Hello @Beverly Scott IPC

Thank you for your question and for sharing your concerns.

I understand how challenging it can be to manage a large number of comments in an ongoing document. I will need to check with the product team to see if there’s an option to disable the behavior of automatically filtering to resolved comments.

I’ll update you as soon as I have more information. In the meantime, if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out.

Thank you,
Abhishek Rao

Hi @Abhishek Rao

I share the wish of @Beverly Scott IPC to add an option to disable this functionality because the amount of comments will be to much to handle the document.

Here is an example of an issue with resolved comments appearing while I'm working in InDesign. I often accidentally delete all of the highlighted text when resolved comments appear.

@Abhishek RaoPlease ask the product team to change this behaviour a.s.a.p. I cannot think of any reason why we would suddenly want to see all resolved comments while editing text with a new comment. If anyone wants to see resolved comments, they can still use the filter. It should not turn on by itself/get triggerd by editing new comments.

Hi @NOcreationsBE,

Thank you for your feedback and for highlighting how this issue impacts your workflow. I completely understand how frustrating it can be to have the comments panel automatically filter to resolved comments when you’re trying to address new ones. I’ve shared your concerns with the product team and emphasized the need for a change to improve the user experience.

Your input is invaluable in helping us make InDesign better. I’ll keep you updated on any developments. In the meantime, if you have any other questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best,

Chiming in here to TURN OFF the "show-only resolved comments" when clicking (even accidentally) on a resolved comment. I couldn't  figure out the pattern showing only resolved comments until I found this thread. Very frustrating. Honestly, the behavior makes no sense in any practical way for someone who designs in the program.

I would also like to see BETTER highlightening for current comment. It's barely a different shade of blue. Why not a color that pops so you can easily see where clicked comment? Like, oh, orange?

Also, thanks.
