Text disappears when typing in text box

I'm getting this issue where when I make any changes to text within a text box, like typing within it, cutting/pasteing, editing, etc. the text disappears. Sometimes it'll come back if I click out of the text box. Sometimes it comes back if I switch between normal and preview mode.

It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be incredibly annoying.

I'm running:

  • Mac OS 11.4
  • Macbook Air M1 2020
  • InDesign 16.2.1

Hi All, We're currently investigating this issue. We'd appreciate if you could share the information listed below: 1. Version of the OS & InDesign. 2. Device Information. 3. Whether it happens with GPU Performance enabled/disabled or both. 4. Does resetting TextEdit preferences on macOS help? 4. A sample of the file. 5. Preferences files(You may find the location of these files here). This information would help us assist you accordingly. You can share the information with me over DM. Rega...

Hi All, Sorry to hear about your experience. We're still working on the fix however we have observed this workflow shared below has helped on some machines. Could you try these and share your observations: 1. Open FontBook, 2. Select all fonts 3. Right-click and select Validate fonts, 4. Delete the font that was marked as having Issues.  5. Restart InDesign.  Hope this is helpful! Regards, Ashutosh

OK, here's what I have tried and so far so good:

I reinstalled Indesign v16.4 (previous version) and opened up an old document. No disappearing type, yay! So, then I opened up a document that was giving me problems in v17.0.1 and the problem has stopped there also. Can anyone else try that and see if it works for them?

Why should we go backwards, we have paid to move forward so fix the problem with the latest.

Still infuriating - come on

The problem was never in the older version. It started after the updates. Cc2021 has it. And with me its getting worse. I make a lot of ebooks and never had this problem there. Now its there as well. Yesterday i spent four hours to correct typo's in a 128 page book. Normally it would be 20 minutes. Adobe should at least know where the problem is.  But glad for you its solved in your case.

@Ashutosh_Mishra

I will be quite frank: It is actually qute amazing and scary that this problem has not been fixed for half a year. What do you think we are paying for? Adobe Indesign basically does not work. Where can I refund?

I replied to an email announcing the latest pre-release of 17.0.2 with no mention of this issue. My comment asking if anything was going to be done about the disappearing text was picked up by an Adobe developer and questions were asked almost as though it was a passing curio.

The outsourcing of development offshore comes with consequences, accoutablity is one step removed and coridor conversations betweem product managers and marketing people who hear the backlash is not had with the actual developers of these products. Adobe has always funded their new poroduct lines with it's DTP line of products and simply is taking the piss at this point. InDesign was more stable fifteen years ago and also had feature parity with todays version except for a few cloud platform integrating PDF commenting and so on.

I'm sure they are not even trying to fix this, as this version is a
"temporary" adaptation for M1 chips. They might be working on the new
version and not bothering solving the problem on this bugged one. What
really frustrates me is that they are taking almost one year to make a
proper compatible version to M1, and the subscription plan was supposed to
cover these updates way faster.

Hello...

Are you guys coming up with a fix for this problem? It is really affecting our work.

I am on an M1 Mac Mini and it happens all the time wether the GPU performance is enabled or disabled.

Please fix this soon.

I'm on Big Sur macOS v11.6.1 on an M1 mac Mini with 8 GB RAM. Constant problem. My workaround is I have shortcuts for View> Normal and View> Preivew and I just flick between them when the text disaapears. Seeing a bunch of other bugs like Text Wrap crashing InDesign on my M1 mini so I have to avoid using it completely because I enver know when it will come back and impact places I've applied Text Wrapping. Not so much an issue for production but slows my deisgn phase down  A L O T.

So what about all the people who have less than that on standard 8gb M1 chips? or on older machines? Indesign has historically always worked on less ram than 16gb without issues.

I'm sorry, but historical system requirements and reccomendations are totally irrelevant. I've been using InDesign since 1999. The requirements change and for the life of me, I can't understand spending all that money for an underpowered machine.

8GB is about enough to run an operating system. Anyone doing professional design work should understand that. I just built a new desktop machine with 64GB. My laptop has 16GB.

Eight is NOT enough.

Firstly i find your reply rude and secondly offensive. I have been using Adobe software for 14 years and before that i used quark. I am aware of the hardware requirements required to do my job. In all my time as a designer i have never had a Mac with more than 12 gb ram bought for me or my team by my employer due to cost. From a personal point of view i imagine there are a lot of freelance designers on this forum who also don't have the money to buy the hardware you're saying is required. Adobe indesign has never had issues in the past and it shouldn't need huge amounts of ram in order to type some text into a box without it disappearing. The idea that you need at least 16gb of ram to write some words is laughable and putting it simply, it doesn't need excuses it just needs fixing.

Dude, you're completely out to lunch. Besides giving useless opinions that contradict Adobe's own specs, you're living in the past where 64 GB of ram is something to be impressed by. A new M1 with 8gb of unified memory is capable of seamlessly editing and rendering 4k video, so of course that's sufficient to run a page layout program. Just as it's sufficient to run Photoshop, Illustrator, and literally every other creative tool other than inDesign. So go tell your outdated fantasies of what a creative machine is is elsewhere, they are beyond useless here.

And yet here you are with the problems and here I am working without issues. The system requirements / recommendations are clear. 16GB of RAM. There’s no asterisk for M1 machines.

InDesign system requirements (adobe.com)

Now, I'm more than willing to be proven incorrect here. As I've said in several other posts, this is inexusable at this point, but it's what it is. There's is zero way at this point to know where the biggest issues are with a new platform, a new operating system and a new version of InDesign. But if you think your 8GB of RAM in that Mac are enough, well, who am I to argue?

Oh, and I’ve been around for a lot longer than 10 years.

I love this thread!!! Let's not try to eat each other though.

The software should work on an M1 Mac, agreed the specs do say 16gb RAM minimum. So I guess Adobe gets a free pass.

TBH i could do without all the bloat they have added that is completley useless in the recent updates. Mostly all the crap cloudware they have added that doesnt work.

Thank goodness Figma exists, and I hardly do print work anymore.

Affinity Publisher works great on 8gb M1.
