P: Flag & Color Label Shortcut Issues (Specific Languages AZERTY&QWERTZ)

Community Beginner ,
Oct 27, 2021 Oct 27, 2021

I encounter an issue with the latest update (V11) on shortcuts to assign a color label (6,7,8,9).
Those shortcuts won't anymore assign a color label, it will now only remove the color label.
The shortcut "Assign a color label and go to next photo" (Shift+6 to 9) still work well as previously.
Please fix this adobe, my culling speed depend on it.
Thanks in advance,

Hello

Thanks for your post which confirms that I am not the only user who has such problems.

I have updated LR to the last version and Ventura to the last version too.

Nothing has improved : I still have these problems and the only way to use the shortcuts is avoid the numeric keypad !

The screen recording and screenshot from original poster @RS Film shows they are running LR in French with an AZERTY keyboard. There's a three-year-old bug Adobe hasn't fixed using the numeric keypad on AZERTY kebyoards to rate and color-label photos.

See here for a workaround that reassigns LR's shortcuts to the top-row keys, making them act like the top-row keys on a QWERTY keyboard:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-flag-amp-color-label-shortcut-issues-specifi...

The symptoms posted by other users in this thread sound like they may also be using an AZERTY keyboard's numeric keypad.  If that doesn't apply to you, then please start a new discussion thread describing exactly your symptoms; include a clear photo of your entire keyboard and the results of the menu command Help > System Info.

My solution, Feb 2022, also using an AZERTY Keybord, works perfectly :

"Do not reset your Preference. It just a waste of time or worse you’ll end up messing your LR. "… Of course I should have written "Copy - delete the .plist" since in this case it is easy to restore the previous settings, wich I had done.

For the rest… obviously it should be related as a mapping problem with the numeric keyboard on Apples (and apparently other brands) extended keyboard with MacOS 12.2 since previously all worked flawlessly.

My own workaround : even if I use a Wacom tablet, I also use a Stream Deck 15 LCD input keys accessory… I assigned the shortucts prefixed with Maj - Uppercase and the workaround is quite satisfactory, even if a little less handy than the use of numeric extended keyboard.

And… yes, Adobe should look seriously into this misbehavior since it clearly is a bug!

Best regards from France,

Balliet J.M."

And… Abobe does'nt look for bug corrections or real improvements… only for our wallet !

I have found out strange Color label behaviour on macOS (latest version of macOS and LR).
When I am in Grid view and I want to label photo, I press 8 to label photo with Green, but LR says Remove Green label, altough picture is not yet labeled.
When I label photo in Photo-Set Color label menu to Green label and press 8, LR say Set Green label, altough it is already set.

So it is working just in reverse.

Hey, @michaljanata. Thanks for raising this. While I couldn't recreate this behavior, could you share a short video of it?

How long do you hold the key down? Holding the key input can repeat the Add & Remove repeatedly, and on-screen updates can take slightly longer to finish.

1. Are you using the numeric keypad or the number keys above the letter keys? There have been problems with that in the past.

2. Are you using an AZERTY keyboard (e.g. for French)? There have been problems with that in the past.

3. Restart your computer. If the problem persists, try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

4. Try deleting the Helper.lrdata folder:

a) Do Catalog Settings > General > Show to open Finder / File Explorer on the current catalog folder.
b) Exit LR.
c) In that folder, delete the folder "<catalog> Helper.lrdata".
d) Restart LR, and it will rebuild the folder.

The Helper.lrdata folder caches information about metadata, keywords, folders, collections, and other things to speed the performance of LR and it can sometimes get corrupted. In recent versions, LR has used it more heavily to improve the speed of displaying metadata, and there have been a fair number of bugs with it.

Yes, my keyboard layout is problem, as always for Adobe apps.
I'm using QWERTZ keyboard for Czech.

And I have found out that it is problem. As for years for Adobe apps, that do work correctly only with english layout, unfortunately.

US english layout works well.
So thanks fork pointing out this.

@Sameer K I really do not understand, why numebr 8 especially on numeric keypad doesn't work same on different layouts. 8 is still 8.

"I'm using QWERTZ keyboard for Czech."

Unfortunately, I'm not able to reproduce the misbehavior when using the Mac OS Czech QWERTZ keyboard viewer. So there must be some additional factors triggering the bug. Unfortunately, unless Adobe is able to reproduce the problem easily, they won't pay much attention.

1. Does the problem occur when you use the numeric keypad, the numbers on the top row of keys, or both?

2. Do you have a second QWERTZ keyboard you could try?

Problem occurs with numeric keypad. Numbers on the top row of keys are working with Shift key.

I have tried my spare keyboard and behaviour is same. Numeric keypad is working bad.

Hmm, I'm unable to reproduce that with the Mac keyboard viewer, which with other keyboard-layout bugs, has been very useful in reproducing. But trying again, this time I found the AZERTY color-label shortcut bug acknowledged by Adobe four years ago and not fixed:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-flag-amp-color-label-shortcut-issues-specifi...

If you're very determined, you could try the approach of this workaround, which works for AZERTY keyboards and probably will work with QWERTZ keyboards:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-flag-amp-color-label-shortcut-issues-specifi...

It's tedious to configure the workaround, though.

Now I have found another bug. When I use number on numeric keypad with Shift, which should work as Advance, it sets or remove label for two pictures at once, which is also not correct behaviour.

Thanks for tip about plugin, but I'm not going to spend another money to repair Adobe's. And while there are similar non-english keyboard shortcuts bugs in other apps (PS, INDD) for more then four years, I'm very sceptical to have them fixed.
