P: Black Screen in Lightroom Classic Develop Module on Windows 10

I'm new to LR.  When I installed it and imported some images into LR I can see them in the Library module.  When I select an image in the Library module and hit D or go to the Develop module, all I get is a black (not blank) screen.

I'm sure I switched some setting somewhere, but I don't know which one.

I'm using Windows 10, 64 bit.

Lightroom moderator (or anyone else), please help.

Hi all,

We're sorry for the black screen issue when going to the Develop Module. If you are seeing this issue with the latest version of Lightroom Classic then, you should check the minimum graphics card requirements for the latest Lightroom Classic app.

Here's the GPU FAQ: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html

If the installed graphics card doesn't meet the minimum system requirements then, turn it off from the Lightroom Classic preferences > Performance tab > Relaunch Lightroom Classic.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,

Mohit

I just started having this problem over the past few months. I see this question and many of the responses are from 2019. I'm wondering why computer has just started doing this in 2024? Disabling the graphics prossesor seems to have fixed the issue for me (so far), however I'm wondering why this is still happening and if there is a better fix?
Lightroom Classic up to date 13.2 and graphics prossesor AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB.

This happened to me. I updated to the latest Nvidia Studio Driver to this date 1.12.21. Should this still be happening?

Hi there,

We're sorry for the trouble. Which Lightroom version do you have installed? Also, which Graphics card do you installed on the machine?

After updating to the latest Graphics drivers, does it resolve the problem for you?

Thanks,

Mohit

Nvidia 2080ti, two of them.

Lightroom v9.4

I'm on the latest Nvidia Studio Driver, not the gaming/general driver.

Turn off the graphics processor, force LR to use DirectX, and update your graphics driver directly from the manufacturer, as described in this article: Adobe Lightroom GPU Troubleshooting and FAQ

Thanks so much, John.  Turning off the graphics processor seems to have solved the issue.  And I will go ahead and update my graplhics driver.

I'm wondering if you could please tell me, though, what forcing LR to use DirectX will do.

Thanks again.

My (imperfect) understanding of DirectX: Windows provides programs with a number of different ways to access the display. LR tries to choose the fastest method that's compatible with the Windows version and graphic drivers installed. But due to bugs in graphics drivers, LR doesn't always choose a reliable method. DirectX is usually the most reliable but not necessarily the fastest method. Forcing LR to use DirectX may work around bugs in the other methods exposed by the graphics drivers installed.

Please accomplish the following.

In Lightroom, click on Help, then click on System Information, click on Copy.

Paste that into your reply.

Try disabling GPU acceleration in Lr Preferences / Performance panel.

And, if you are on Windows, I suggest going to your video card manufacturer's website and make sure your video driver is up to date.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.0, Photoshop 27.0, ACR 18.0, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0 .

I just updated LR and I am having problems viewing/working my files in the Develop module.

When I chose a photo in Library and I go to the Develop Module I only see a Black.

The LR software and commands are visible but the frame with the image is completely black !

What is going on and what is the fix?

Was there any fix for the original problem of the black screen in Develop module? Is there an official bug reported or official reply from Adobe?

I updated to Lightroom Classic quite soon after release and I regret ever since. It has a nice new feature for Adjustment brush but black screen bug is killing the SW for me. It was happening in 7.0, 7.1 and it is still happening in 7.2 - almost half an year after initial release. I have AMD Radeon HD 6970 with the latest (and last) version of drivers - 16.2.1.

Does it mean that my GPU is no longer supported? If yes, why is installation program not detecting such important detail? I disagree with proposed solution of disabling GPU acceleration. It brings significant performance hit but it can be considered as a workaround while waiting for a patch in future release but the right question after several months and couple releases is: Is the patch ever coming?

The most annoying part is that it is not just broken all the time so it does not look like the GPU is not supported. It works when Lightroom is started and you go straight to Develop module but don't you dare to switch to any other module and change photo there. When returning to Develop module, you will be welcomed with a black screen. If you use two screens, the preview on the second screen is still correctly rendered. If you try to crop, you will suddenly see image with the crop tool but as soon as you finish cropping, you will get the black screen again. Restarting the whole application resolves the problem until you need to switch modules again. It just looks like something is incorrectly reinitialized when going back to Develop module. This does not happen when using Camera Raw in Photoshop because it probably launches a fresh instance for each photo.

At this point, I call this a bug caused by insufficient QA because this is so easily reproducible and it is happening so often that there is no way how would good QA miss it.

You are aware that Adobe engineers also frequent the forum for feedback or to answer questions....aren't you?

This is wrong.

You are aware that Adobe has spelled this out extremely clearly, aren't you?

Problems with the software are to be reported to the other forum I listed, where Adobe Engineers actually read the reports. Only tech support staff from Adobe are seen in this forum, and then only to provide tech support, not to feed problems to the engineers.

With all due respect, tech support does not operate in a bubble.

Unresolved and continuing problems are documented and reported higher up the chain. This process allows companies to identify software bugs.

Thanks,
