P: Lightroom iPad/iPhone Device overheats & brightness dims

I haven't found anything related to this in online searches, so i thought i would ask Lightroom users.

I have Lightroom mobile installed on my iPhone 7 and when i use it, the phone gets very hot. If the ambient temp is 90 or better (which happens quite often here in Florida), the phone will overheat and shut down after a while. I used it without that happening yesterday (ambient temps around 75), but the phone was still quite hot. I have a pretty thin Spigen case on the phone, and it doesn't get hot with anything other apps.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Adobe Lightroom Mobile product updates have been released. The May 2024 updates contain changes to address this issue. 

Updates will be available via the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and the Galaxy App Store. Note that it can take several days for some customers to receive a notification of an available update via their App Store.

I just updated to 9.3 on my M2 iPad Pro and indeed after 5-10 minutes of playing around with Fuji raw files it appears you have fixed the issue. No screen dimming and the rear surface of the iPad doesnt heat up like it used to.

Well done for sorting this but it's remains dissapointing how long it took for you guys to even acknowledge the problem let alone work on a fix. I'll leave this message with a thank you... we got there eventually!

I have the same problems on new Ipad air 2024. It overheats and fast mow battery. 

I have the last version of Lightroom Mobile, so that was not the solution.

The editing was Basics sliders, masking, AI, everything for edit portraits. The iPad warms up verry quickly

Unfortunately it's not working, still. I was excited about the update, but it hasn't solved anything and my battery, drained so fast along with the heat coming from the center of my iPad. The thing I didn't notice was dimming. It used to dim before a lot and now it doesn't. I don't do anything unusual, but the problem is very very obvious when I start to create a single mask. This is the third iPad I own with the same problem. And it happens on my iPhone Pro as well.

I have did the same edits also with masking on Photoshop en Affinity without any problems. 

So I hope that Lightroom will come with an solution for the problems from heating en low battery. If not i will do editing with Affinity for iPad

I am already updated the Lightroom app on ipad pro 12'9 latest OS version and same thing also tried the‘battery saver’ mode without positive effect, so this is me saying bye to Adobe on iPad 🙂 Afinnity works like a charm, no issues.

I'm on iPhone 15 pro in the Netherlands (colder environment) and my phone also gets way too hot while using Lightroom. Even on the newest update. The issue is not fixed. You'd think a 15 pro would be powerful enough not to overheat for just editing pics

M1 iPad Pro user.

With much respect, adobe has helped me get started as a serious photographer. This isn't my first iPad Pro And I know they're capable of so much more.. But for some reason, the iPad struggles in the Lightroom app. I've done enough testing and I've been patient Update upon update.. for about 6 years.. that's a lot of money.. well I think I found a very humble solution. 
AffinityPhoto. (The difference was night and day)
I'm just looking out for us and our devices. 

I hope Adobe learns a few things because I love the cloud and the AI has been cool too but I'm not needing AI.

Agreed, I thought they had fixed the issue but I was wrong. M2 iPad with latest update still overheats even when just browsing through photos. I'm cancelling my subscription. The developers should be sacked.

I have the same problem as everyone else here. After 5 min of work in lightroom it overheats, the screen dims and it is impossible to work. Is this ever going to be fixed? Apparently it's a long-standing problem.

IPad Pro M2 12.9, iPadOS 17.5.1. Newest Lightroom. 

After newest update of Lightroom, the overheating and dimming of the screen is exactly the same as before. It occurs after few minutes of editing and at that point the software is clearly not useable properly, as everything is dark. It looks like Adobe can't fix this issue. I wonder weather the MacBook Air overheats too...

Hi. I'm experiencing the same of my iPad Pro 11". It's actually terrible and I'm not sure if the problem but it's a hindrance to your work flow. Will be looking into alternative software for editing. Unhappy customer!

I'm using Lightroom app (v 9.4) on my brand new iPhone 15 Pro Max. But from the start until now, every single time that i have used Lightroom to edit, the phone gets overheated to a position where you can't hold it in your hands. You stated that with the last update on May 2024 the issue was resolved, it doesn't have logical explanation that the latest version of iPhone gets overheated while using an photo editing app (the phone doesn't get overheated when i use other apps) 

Please fix this

I suggest everyone starts emailing the CEO saying this is a defective product not fit for its intended purpose and politely ask him to forward the complaints to whichever executive leads the iOS/iPad OS development.

I'm starting to think they are fully aware of the problem but there isn't an easy fix. I wonder if the issue persists on the new M3 iPad Pro. In any case I'm fed up of using battery saver mode on my M2 iPad to stop this from happening, looking at alternatives now.

As I mentioned I think I remember that this was their first iOS app and it was written in Adobe Air (i.e. Flash). Probably ported to native code over the years with some Adobe translation libraries. Not fully native iOS code. So they probably need to full re-write which Adobe rarely does. Instead of bugging execs at Adobe who will do nothing, a beteer route would be to bug Apple's App Store to report it. I can't imagine they would allow an app to obverheat like this. They will either force Adobe to fix it or remove it from the store.

Looks like if you try to report a quality issue on the iOS app store it takes you to adobe. So instead I just reported it as a scam or fraud which goes to Apple. I suggest everyone else do this. Shame on you Adobe!

I bought a $1200 iPad Pro and returned it because of this issue, plus the fact I can't stitch panoramas (and the photoshop app sucks).

I suggest everyone to start emailing them about this problem, because there's probably no point in writing here. So I recently wrote to support, they told me that they have not received such complaints yet and as if I'm the only one with such a problem with overheating in lightroom mobile. And actually this thread is from 2017 bla bla bla completely ignoring the presence of 8 pages of comments. Then they redirected me to my email, I described the problem in an email and left a link to this thread. (no response yet)

My ipad pro keeps on overheating after 3-5 mins of editing. The screen dims afterwards. And it takes time to go back to normal. Once it's back to normal, after 3-5 mins, again the ipad goes back to getting super hot and screen dims. It keeps repeating and it hinders me from getting effective with my work. I can't edit hundreds of photos if this keeps happening again and again. I bought the latest ipad but the issue comes back.

I thought I'd share my experience here as well, being a long-time Lr on iOS user.

iPad:

I have 3 iPads: (1) a 2018 iPad Pro 11" 3rd gen A12X, (2) a 2023 iPad Pro 12.9" 6th gen M2, and (3) a 2024 iPad Pro 11" 7th gen M4. On all three iPads, if I am editing and scrolling through a lot of photos, the iPad gets hot in the area (presumably) where the GPU is. Sometimes it gets quite hot. It never gets hot enough to cause the screen to dim on any of my iPads, and the heat fades quickly when I stop flipping through photos or doing heavy edits. For example, last night after our local fireworks display on the 4th of July, I imported more than 250 full size CR3 raw files onto my iPad 7th gen M4, scrolled through them marking my picks, went back and edited the picks and exported some back to the camera roll. A little heat during the import process, and not much after that. 

iPhone:

I'm currently using the iPhone 14 Pro, but have had nearly every iPhone and have used Lr extensively on my phone since it was available. I've noticed the same heating up, especially near the cameras, occasionally quite hot. This happens a lot when shooting HDR with Lr Camera and then waiting for the processing to occur. Again, while my phone has gotten quite hot, I've never had the screen dim as a result of Lr running hot. And the heat fades quickly once the processing is done.

I will add that I also live in Florida as noted by one responder above, and when I'm out in the sun with my iPhone, I have the dimming issue caused by the heat of the sun. This happens not with Lr, but with any app, even when I'm not using any apps and just looking at the Home Screen. This happens to me sometimes even if the phone is in my pocket, when I'm sitting in the direct sunlight. This is of course not related to Lr but shows how the iPhone can be sensitive to heat.
