P: Lightroom iPad/iPhone Device overheats & brightness dims

Community Beginner ,
Dec 19, 2017 Dec 19, 2017

I haven't found anything related to this in online searches, so i thought i would ask Lightroom users.

I have Lightroom mobile installed on my iPhone 7 and when i use it, the phone gets very hot. If the ambient temp is 90 or better (which happens quite often here in Florida), the phone will overheat and shut down after a while. I used it without that happening yesterday (ambient temps around 75), but the phone was still quite hot. I have a pretty thin Spigen case on the phone, and it doesn't get hot with anything other apps.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

Steve

Converting this to a bug just to be clear that we do acknowledge the reports here and have a ticket logged for the engineers to investigate.

Please share specific steps used when this occurs.

February 5, 2024 Update
[WORKAROUND]

Although it's not ideal, it may help if you enable ‘battery saver’ mode, which throttles the GPU then Lightroom performs much more slowly BUT the overheating/screen dimming issue no longer occurs.

I thought I'd share my experience here as well, being a long-time Lr on iOS user.

iPad:

I have 3 iPads: (1) a 2018 iPad Pro 11" 3rd gen A12X, (2) a 2023 iPad Pro 12.9" 6th gen M2, and (3) a 2024 iPad Pro 11" 7th gen M4. On all three iPads, if I am editing and scrolling through a lot of photos, the iPad gets hot in the area (presumably) where the GPU is. Sometimes it gets quite hot. It never gets hot enough to cause the screen to dim on any of my iPads, and the heat fades quickly when I stop flipping through photos or doing heavy edits. For example, last night after our local fireworks display on the 4th of July, I imported more than 250 full size CR3 raw files onto my iPad 7th gen M4, scrolled through them marking my picks, went back and edited the picks and exported some back to the camera roll. A little heat during the import process, and not much after that.

iPhone:

I'm currently using the iPhone 14 Pro, but have had nearly every iPhone and have used Lr extensively on my phone since it was available. I've noticed the same heating up, especially near the cameras, occasionally quite hot. This happens a lot when shooting HDR with Lr Camera and then waiting for the processing to occur. Again, while my phone has gotten quite hot, I've never had the screen dim as a result of Lr running hot. And the heat fades quickly once the processing is done.

I will add that I also live in Florida as noted by one responder above, and when I'm out in the sun with my iPhone, I have the dimming issue caused by the heat of the sun. This happens not with Lr, but with any app, even when I'm not using any apps and just looking at the Home Screen. This happens to me sometimes even if the phone is in my pocket, when I'm sitting in the direct sunlight. This is of course not related to Lr but shows how the iPhone can be sensitive to heat.

When using brand new iPad Air M2 (2024) after about minute or so the display dim a lot (auto brightness is turned off same as other settings) and iPad seems to overheat. It mainly happens when using masking tool. I bought iPad mainly for photo editing in Lightroom, which I am using in my Macbook, but this is unusable... is there solution on the way? I read lot of forums and it seems that this problem is here for a very long time and still no solution...

Why is this thread marks as "Solved"? This problem is not solved, so please take this "solved" off and maybe try to help us, before we all go from lightroom to another app on ipad..

Previously an android user and had no issues with the Lightroom app. Now as soon I moved to the iPhone 15 Pro I'm having this same issue. Quick and serious overheating and screen dimming as a result. It's so bad it's burned a magsafe ring into my phone case

It's hilarious this has been a problem for 7 years and adobe just swipes it under the rug like nothing ever happened! I can relate to the person above me, I also used the Lightroom app for years on android and as soon as I began using it on ios I started experiencing overheating, screen dimming, battery drainage and lack of precision when I would want to make delicate editing, this all points towards extremely poor optimization, especially for such a simple app, this is ridiculous!

After some update there is a change. The phone (iphone 15 pro) still heats up quite a lot, but despite this the screen does not dim, photos zoom in and out without lags. BUT sliders, brushes, etc. are still laggy, works with a delay, as if you are working in power saving mode

This is happening on my M1 12.9 Pro too. Very disappointing.. Has anyone updated to an M2 or now M4 to see if this is still happening?

I have a M1 12.9 and M4 13.

I've never had this dimming issue on either of them, even working for a good hour

@obxbeachphoto please try out the new import setting in the 9.5 version, Pause sync while importing
That should help some with overheating which causes dimming.

@Court5D34 how fast does the overheating occur? What kind of images are you editing when this happens?

Since all running apps, including battery performance and surroundings have an impact on overheating, does it help to enable the iOS Low power mode?

Thanks,
Ignacio

The dimming screen happens while editing, not importing. It literally
happens at the worst time while trying to do my job. I need full screen
brightness and resolution at all times.

I am processing RAW camera images. I haven't attempted low power mode, but
I do need full brightness and full resolution on the screen so if that is
affected then I couldn't use power savings.

For me this is also not the solution for overheating.

Still overheating and hence sliders start to lag bla bla bla. Nothing's changed

UPD:  my phone is now so overheating that the screen is fading. It's literally impossible to work, maybe it's time to get off the couch? It's absurd that some photo editing app can't JUST WORK on an iPhone 15 pro. People pay money for this.

@obxbeachphoto thanks for letting us know that this is editing only.

Are there any specific features, e.g. effects or other features that can be time consuming? Have you noticed how fast this happens for you? Like after 5-10 images or more of a 10-20? The edit types still matter though but it would be helpful to get more information on how fast you run into this.

Just popping in to say that I'm experiencing this issue still in 09/2024 on my iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB. I'm on the latest version of IOS and have the most recent version of LightRoom Mobile on my phone.

I've experienced this issue with my iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and now my iPhone 15 Pro Max. This issue, in my experience, was never fixed in any update despite what has been said in the thread by Adobe employees. I wish there was a statement explaining exactly how/why this was happening. Saying they've addressed and fixed the issue to me means that they are aware of a causation, which I have not been able to find in any patch notes.

I will say if you use Lightroom while charging either via usbc, lightning connector, or especially a magnetic charger, the iPhone will overheat much more quickly leading to the screen dimming issue quicker. Other than this, I myself cannot pin down exactly what seems to be a causation. Masking and ai presets seem to result in the issue much more quickly, but for me it doesn't really matter what is done, eventually at varying rates the iPhone will overheat and the screen will dim beyond a useable brightness at some point, usually within 10-30 minutes, but almost always on the faster side of this rate.

I really hope there's a way to fix it soon as these days I can't really edit from my PC so I rely on my iPhone.

Hi, iPhone 15 Pro Max user here. I had my phone in 100% battery, started using LR and 30 minutes later it has 78% battery and was overheating. This happens every time I use this app. Adobe can you do something please?? We pay a lot monthly and we deserve more. Thanks.
