P: Photos Washed Out with New iPhone

I'm feeling discouraged, as purchasing a new phone is a big expense, and now I have a problem I can't fix (yes I've called Adobe). With photos taken with my new iPhone 16, after automatically importing in the Lightroom app, when clicked on, the photo changes without being prompted to do so. A twirling icon pops up and voilà the image becomes washed out, and ruined. When I look at the image in my iPhone library it's fine. I've tried everything.....called adobe, painstainingly combed through settings...even went to AT&T just in case they could help me. The problem is we PAY for Lightroom and Adobe customer service is not helping.

An update: we have communicated this issue to Apple, and a fix should come from a future iOS 18.x update.  We don't have a specific date or iOS version from Apple to share.

In the meantime, the LR iOS mid-December release will correct the appearance of any affected image.  Our developers found a way to work around the issue of iPhone 16 images having the wrong gamma curve and will apply a fix when reading them into Lightroom/ACR to use the gamma curve that Apple is actually using to render the

Greetings all,

Adobe Lightroom Mobile product updates are released.  The December release updates contain a fix for this issue.

Updates will be available via the Apple App Store. Note that it can take several days for some customers to receive a notification of an available update via their App Store.

Thank you for being so patient.

Hello @luis_4754

You are right in that any raw image from any modern iPhone with a larger camera sensor needs processing to display.  They way the native Photos.app chooses to render such raw images, and the way Adobe Lightroom with it's Adobe Color profile chooses to render the same images sometimes differ.  When these images are viewed in the Device tab, iOS provides the intial image display until Lightroom's underlying Camera Raw technology takes over, and there can be a visible "pop" as the image details are fully realized/displayed.  You can even see this occur in certain cases just within the Photos.app, though perhaps the transition may be smoother.

Usually the Adobe Color profile appearance for raw images is closer to iOS Photos.app than what is currently seen with the latest iOS.  All I know is our Developers have reached out to Apple about this.

Lightroom on iOS automatically edits photos half a second after opening them.
Changing Import Preset to Camera Settings does nothing.
Manually resetting settings does not give the same picture as the original.

I read that an update was supposed to fix the differing visuals of photos across the photos app and  Lightroom, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

Unfortunately, they don't care about our problem. The Adobe assistant who answered at the beginning of the conversation is no longer there.
And yet we have shown that this was the source of the problem... But well...
The bug was not reported by enough users.
I'm ending my annual subscription at the end of the month and will probably leave Adobe.

Hello. Started working in Lr on iPhone 16 pro max. When you upload a photo that you took in 4:3 size, Lightroom brightens it and the quality becomes less than original. But when I shoot at 16:9, the photo is loaded in Lr at its original quality. iOS is the latest. There is no such thing on iPhone 14. What could this be connected with? Thanks in advance

Hey there, Welcome to the Lightroom Community.

We need more details to help you.

  1. What version of Lightroom are you using on your iPad?
  2. Would you mind sharing the outcome of the image when using 4:3 and 16:9?
  3. What image type are you working on? Is it RAW, JPEG, or any other image?
  4. How much space do you have in your device? Are images synced to the iCloud?

You can check storage by going to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage on your iPhone to see how much space is available.

You can try to force quit and restart the Lightroom app to refresh the syncing process and see how it goes.

Thanks,

Shivani

I don't understand this.
A while ago you said that the problem had been identified and passed on to Apple, who were supposed to fix it.
And now you're asking us for more details...
The problem is on iPhone and iPad.
On Raw and Heif.
All image sizes.
Enough storage on iPhone. And application uninstalled and reinstalled several times

Hello @Julien23866590xre9

A forum moderator moved the separate conversation between the user "???????_3892" and Shivani to this authoritative thread.  Shivani did not realize this is a know issue, otherwise I'm sure the post would have been merged then.

IOW, you can ignore Shivani's message.

Hello. Version ligtroom 10.0.2

I have already uninstalled and installed the application several times. The image is in HEIF format, it is in this format that the problem with photos occurs. There is no such problem in JPEG format. There is enough free memory on the device, 270Gb. Yes, my device syncs with iCloud. I am attaching 2 photos. The image on the left has just been loaded into the program, the one on the right is ready for editing. I hope I have answered your questions in sufficient detail.

Just tested this using my iphone16pro on my iPad and the same issue. I never noticed it because I always immediately edit these images but yeah as imported on heic and proRAW images, the gamma appears too low.

The LR iOS developers were able to develop a patch for this that will ship with the next app update (~ mid-December), and Apple should still release a fix at some point to address the core issue.

Above all, I don't understand why the problem to be solved is on Apple's side when the problem only exists with Adobe.
And why it took so long.
We're paying for a faulty service. And no solution has been offered.
