P: Photoshop (Beta 26.8) does not save file if Camera Raw plugin is on Smart object

Photoshop version: 26.8.0 release
OS and version: Windows 10 Pro

Step 1 create or open a psd/tif/psb file
Step 2 use Camera Raw (version 17.3.2227) on Smart Object (Embedded or Linked)
Step 3 save file > Could not save "file-name.psd" because of a program error

Info: Even after intentionally crashing Photoshop, used file isn't restored.

Expected result: Photoshop should save file
Actual result: Photoshop does not save file

The new update 26.8 m.3082 will not save a document if there is a smart filter applied to any layer. I am having to rasterise the layer in order for it to save - not good!

A similar thing is happening to me in Beta V 26.8.  When I try to save the file as a PSD I get an error message

 Clicking OK takes me back to the file where I can do more editing.  I was able to save the file as a JPG which really doesn't do me any good.  I checked that none of the folders and files were Read Only.  I also tried temporarily deleting several of the layers and then saving, but I had the same result.  Removing the Smart Filters produced the same result. A layered Tiff would not save either.  If I flattened the layers then it would save as a PSD.  It would not let me save the layered version as a PSB.  Here's the Layers panel for this image.  It's not really that involved:

Everything was working well yesterday.  I believe that I did an update this moring.

Desktop: Mac Mini M4 Pro 24G memory

Steps to reproduce: 

1. open .psd file

2. make any kind of alteration

3. File>Save (not work)

4. File>Save AS... (not work)

Error msg: "Could not save <file> because of a program error"

Editing a .jpg file does not produce the same error.

I also reset the Preference file on loading by using the accepted 3-key combo while clicking the program icon AND I re-installed the app twice.

I tried one other thing.  I opened a file that I created in Photoshop (Beta) yesterday.  Beta V26.8 would open the file and present everything as it should be.  I immeditately tried to use Save As to save the file to a new file name.  I received the same error message.  Kind of looks like someone forgot to run a critical part of the validation test suite.

I removed PS Beta V26.8 and reinstalled PS Beta V 26.7.  IT WORKS!!!!!!

Hi all, we see this as well and have passed it on to the team to investigate.

As suggested, rolling back to 26.7 might fix this as a workaround for now.

Hey all, one thing that would really help is if you can share WHAT version of 26.8 you are seeing this issue in.

To do that, open Ps Beta and go to Help/SystemInfo..

Copy and past JUST THE FIRST LINE.  It should read something like this:

The current version of Photoshop (Beta) is useless. When I use the new action panel, & the new make subject pop action, then try to save the image as a PSD or TIFF with layers, all I get is an error message. So unable to save all my work.

May 24 - I could not save a file after converting a layer to a smart onject. I was working on an old file. I had saved the image today after making some changes. I isolated the problem to Smart Onject creation.  Sorry, the file is too large to upload (118 mb).

Hi there,

the latest versions of Photoshop, both the beta 26.8 and the official release 26.7, do not save image files as PSD, PSB, and TIFF files with layers when there is a Smart Object layer with Camera Raw adjustments.

I tested other Smart Object adjustmentsm they do not cause problems.

System info is below.

The Nvidia driver of my GeForce RTX 3090 is not the problem: It is the latest available driver from May 19th, "576.52-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-nsd-dch-whql." I installed the previous one (576.02-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-nsd-dch-whql), which did not cause any problems before, as long as the previous releases of Photoshop had been installed. With this older driver, the problem remains.

None of the tips given on the Adobe page "Program error when opening or saving files" solve the problem.

UPDATE May 26th: Just tested the same on the Photoshop beta 26.8 on my MacBook Pro M2 Max: Same error.

Hello Adobe Team,

After updating to Photoshop (Beta) v26.8, I started encountering a serious issue. When I open previously created .psd files, make edits, and try to save them, I receive the following error:

“Could not save ‘[filename].psd’ because of a program error.”

This issue occurs consistently and prevents me from saving my progress, causing major workflow disruptions and time loss. I’ve attached screenshots of the error message and my current version details for reference.

This bug did not exist in the previous version, and it started immediately after the latest update.

Please investigate this as soon as possible. This is a critical issue for those of us relying on the beta version in production workflows.

I’ve just installed the latest Photoshop Beta 26.8.0 (build 20250527.m.3089) and tested the exact same PSD files that previously triggered the error. I’m happy to confirm that the issue now appears to be resolved — I was able to save files without any problems.

Hello,

I’ve been using Photoshop professionally for years, and my workflow consistently includes editing Smart Objects with Camera Raw Filter. Until recently, saving these files as PSD was never a problem.

However, since a few days ago (mid/late May 2025), Photoshop Beta no longer allows me to save PSD or PSB files after applying Camera Raw Filter on a Smart Object. I receive a message requiring me to “merge visible” in order to save.

Confirmed behavior:

• :white_heavy_check_mark: Camera Raw Filter applied to Smart Object → Save as PSD or PSB fails

• :white_heavy_check_mark: Undoing the Camera Raw step → Save works again

• :white_heavy_check_mark: Saving as JPEG works fine

• :white_heavy_check_mark: Driver is up to date (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060)

• :white_heavy_check_mark: “Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility” is enabled

• :white_heavy_check_mark: Same workflow works perfectly in the regular (non-Beta) version of Photoshop

• :cross_mark: Bug is unique to the Photoshop Beta version (latest as of May 29, 2025)

This appears to be a regression introduced in a recent Beta build, and it critically affects standard, non-destructive workflows.

Please investigate this issue, and advise whether a fix or workaround is planned.
