Hi. Thank you everyone for the patience regarding this issue. Photoshop 25.9 has been released and while it does not contain any additional changes to address this issue, it contains a diagnostics mechanism aimed at helping us better understand the root cause so that we can fix it.

@Marshela37315835hi27@absolute_cooks, @Amy247863851ryi, and anyone else still seeing this issue, it would be helpful if you could do the following for us (it involves enabling the new diagnostics mechanism, reprod

The PS team has reopened this bug due to a small number of reporters on this thread who say the issue is not fixed for them.

Critical to getting a fix for this is more information from those of you for whom the release did not fix your issue.  Exact Reproduction steps would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Previous:
Adobe has released Photoshop 25.7, which contains a potential fix for the PS>Filter> Camera Raw Filter… freezing Photoshop. Please install the update from your Creative Cloud App.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

If you continue to see the problem after updating Photoshop, please respond in this thread with system information and a complete step-by-step workflow for the engineers to review.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for your advise. I indeed had older version. I followed your instructions and installed latest 25.7 hoping it will resolve this issue but unfortunately the behavior described by many others in this topis still remains. When using filter Camera Raw on SmartObject, Photoshop will freeze showing only frozen loading window and Camera Raw dialogue window in the back. You can move the loading bar window but that is only thing you can do. You have to forcequit photoshop and completely avoid this feature. I hate paying so much money for something so buggy...

Adobe does not even mention that the issue is resolved on the Fixed Issues page.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/fixed-issues.html

I'm not suprised that you still encounter the problem.

I've had this same issue for ages too. I've tried the most recent update and no change.

Interestingly though, it happened today and instead of force quitting Photoshop, I just gave up on working and left it 'frozen'. I came back to my computer after about 4 hours later and can see that the progress bar has actually moved on a third. So it isn't freezing photoshop, it's just taking ages to perform quite a simple task. Perhaps this helps the engineers figure out what's going wrong and come up with a solution?

For those of you still able to repo the issue with 25.7, please consider trying to repo the issue for us with all UXP plugins disabled, so we can narrow down the additional root cause(s).

Note that when running Photoshop without any UXP plugins enabled, you will see some side effects, for example no Home Screen on launch (PS may look mostly blank), no modern New dialog, Libraries won't load, etc. However, you should be able to work with smart objects and ACR filter just fine.

Mac:

  1. Use Finder to navigate into the "Adobe Photoshop 2024" folder inside "Applications".
  2. Bring up the context menu on "Adobe Photoshop 2024.app" (.app might not be shown, depending on your settings).
  3. Choose "Show Package Contents"
  4. Navigate into "Contents" then "Required"
  5. Locate the "UXP" folder
  6. Rename the "UXP" folder to "UXP-disabled". You will likely be asked for you adminstrator password to approve.
  7. Launch that same copy of Photoshop while holding down the Shift key. This should trigger a dialog asking if you want to skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins. Click the Yes key.
  8. See if you can reproduce the bug.
  9. Quit Photoshop
  10. Rename the "UXP-disabled" folder back to "UXP", approving as needed.
  11. Launch Photoshop.

Win:

  1. Use Explorer to navigate into "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2024\Required"
  2. Locate the "UXP" folder
  3. Rename the "UXP" folder to "UXP-disabled". You will likely be asked for you adminstrator password to approve.
  4. Launch that same copy of Photoshop while holding down the Shift key. This should trigger a dialog asking if you want to skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins. Click the Yes key.
  5. See if you can reproduce the bug.
  6. Quit Photoshop
  7. Rename the "UXP-disabled" folder back to "UXP", approving as needed.
  8. Launch Photoshop.

Thank you.

Thank you for giving it a try and reporting back @absolute_cooks. To be clear, I do not recommend this as a permanent solution -- it is just a troubleshooting step.

I'm also still interested in hearing what others who try this find -- it's possible it doesn't solve it for everyone.

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue when trying to use the masking part of Camera Raw. I can't get past the splash screen, I can see a very greyed out "X" to close but nothing works, I have to bring up the task manager to close PS before I can do anything else.

25.7 is the version I have.

The same issue happens in PS Beta.

Photoshop and Camera Raw are up-to-date, but I still get the error. I open a JPG, then click Ctrl + Shift + A to open Camera Raw, and everything freezes (have to force close). I tried 5 times, restarting after the third try.

Same thing happened when trying to open an ARW file in Photoshop.

Hi. Thank you everyone for the patience regarding this issue. Photoshop 25.9 has been released and while it does not contain any additional changes to address this issue, it contains a diagnostics mechanism aimed at helping us better understand the root cause so that we can fix it.

@Marshela37315835hi27@absolute_cooks, @Amy247863851ryi, and anyone else still seeing this issue, it would be helpful if you could do the following for us (it involves enabling the new diagnostics mechanism, reproducing the issue, then sharing the diagnostics).

Enabling the diagnostics mechanism and collecting the diagnostics both involve locating the Photoshop settings folder, which should be here:

  • Mac: /Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop 2024 Settings/
  • Win: [Installation Drive]:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2024\Adobe Photoshop 2024 Settings\

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Update to 25.9
  2. Add the following line (exclusive of the quotes) into a PSUserConfig.txt file in the PS Settings folder: "LogACRFilterProgressFreeze 1". This page describes how to setup the PSUserConfig.txt file: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/enable-optional-extensions-photoshop-cc.html.
  3. Quit PS if it is running
  4. Launch PS
  5. Go to Help > System Info.
  6. Verify on the first line that version 25.9.0 is listed.
  7. Scroll a handful of lines until you see "PSUserConfig entries:"
  8. Verify that you see an entry in that section that says " - U LogACRFilterProgressFreeze 1"
  9. Reproduce the issue. This should caue some diagnostics info to added to the bottom of the PSErrorLog.txt file (see later steps).
  10. For good measure, maybe kill Photoshop, restart it, and reproduce the issue again, or even a couple of times. It's possible we'll get different diagnostics info (I'd be interested in having you repo for both the Camera Raw Filter case and the "open an ARW file in Photoshop" case @Amy247863851ryi)
  11. Look in the same Photoshop settings folder for a file called PSErrorLog.txt and open it.
  12. Search for the first line that contains "LogACRFilterProgressFreeze". Select everything from the line above it to the bottom of the file and share that here on the forum.

Mac example of PSErrorLog.txt addition for a single repo case:

2024:05:01 13:48:14 : Version : : Adobe Photoshop 25.9.0 20240516.r.573 296f739
2024:05:01 13:48:14 : ShowProgressWin : 0 : LogACRFilterProgressFreeze

2024:05:01 13:48:14 : Stack : : {"load":[{"Adobe Photoshop 2024":"0x102c90000"},{"Foundation":"0x185166000"},{"CoreFoundation":"0x18403c000"}],"stack":[{"Adobe Photoshop 2024":["0x105667cac","0x107a3cf18","0x107a3dd14","0x107bbd9a8","0x10781a330","0x10781a780","0x1049467a8","0x107f68b20","0x107f679c8","0x107f5b084","0x107f6cb40","0x107f5d488","0x107f6a944","0x107f6a160","0x1082bfdfc","0x10829fac8","0x105661e18","0x10565f25c","0x105651900","0x105651b18","0x1056519a8","0x1055faf68","0x1055fae50"]},{"Foundation":["0x1851f9bd8"]},{"CoreFoundation":["0x1840d5cd0","0x1840d5978","0x1840d54b0","0x1840b89c4"]}]}

On Windows, the 3rd line will instead be a series of lines that are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

Thanks again to everyone for their patience and the assistance in getting to the bottom of this issue.

It's not clear to me if that is the same issue jabba57@bigpond.com. Do you see the progress bar appearing somewhere when that happens? Does it happen every time, or only inconsistently? You're welcome to follow the instructions in my previous post and see if you get the LogACRFilterProgressFreeze diagnostics info in your PSErrorLog.txt file, but if it's not progress bar related then you won't.

Adobe come on! So freaking done loosing my work everytime this happens. I have to shut down PS completely cause nothing else can be done. This is getting frustrating at this point. At the end, we are the ones who pay the price cause it takes way too long to redo everything and we have to deal with our clients afterwards. Ridiculous

Press the ESC key when the Camera Raw is freeze, it really will escape from freezing and you can work and save nomaly. After that, try this method to resetting the Camera Raw preferences:
Hold down the Command key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw (macOS) or hold down the Ctrl key and select Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw (Windows).
Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Camera Raw Preferences?" then Restart your Photoshop.
*I tried and succeeded*

I am having the same problem, opening some old RAW files from an old Mirrorless Olympus camera.

After about a minute of changing settings within the RAW editor, the program becomes unresponsive and I cannot close Adobe PS or access any other menus.

However, it seems if I open Adobe Photoshop from the file in Windows Explorer (which then loads Adobe Photoshop 25.9.1) the problem occurs.

When opening the file from within Adobe Photoshop, the issue does not occur.
