P: Can't detect GPU

Recently I just did an update of Photoshop to V22.3.1

After I launched PS, and then go to the performance dialog box, then noticed that it can't detect my GPU GTX1050i.

This was working fine with the previous version of PS. I suspect that the latest update had something to with this problem.

Same Here. 22.4 has not fixed it and it still crashes as i try to open it.

No longer mentions the GPU Sniffer though, but says this instead.

I've got PS 22.4 to work on my iMac by upgrading the OS from Catalina to Big Sur, which I've been putting off for months. Hope this helps someone.

It worked for me once. I thought it was a miracle and was positively giddy.... I didn't have much time to work that day, though (about a week ago), and just opened Photoshop again—it's back to NOT seeing my GPU.

22.4 doesn't solve the issue for me at all - still no GPU detection - still not able to have scrubby zoom. Much sad.

Having the same issue with a Quadro P5000: it works fine in 22.3, but nothing beyond that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. All drivers, Windows, etc. are at the latest version.

*mdif Is the driver up to date? Have a monitor plugged into the Quadro and not the integrated card?

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Very weird - but after doing a restart this morning (because the pen tool wasn't displaying the path when being used) the GPU acceleration and scrubby zoom now work (same 22.4.1 version - nothing was changed from when I posted the above system info, except for doing a fresh restart. I had restarted many times previously and this didn't work. Seems to function sometimes, and then not work at others).

This part of your system info is interesting:

That is saying that Photoshop is finding openCL and openGL to be unstable on that system at the time Photoshop is launched. That explains why you are seeing the GPU card option grayed out.

Reasons for 'false':

1. General Operating system instability

2. Driver instability

3. Photoshop's detection code being crazy

Having to speculate here, but OpenCL it seems is getting into a bad state; could be caused by other software, operating system or drivers or the interaction of all 3. Even the use of other Adobe software could be causing the OCL instability, although I am not aware of that fact at the present. Whatever the reason, Photoshop can't use the GPU when OpenCL is hosed. Unhosing OpenCL could be done with a system restart, an operating system reset, or avoiding the use of the applications that cause it, whatever they are. At least know that inconsistent results is probably due to some wrench in the OCL stack.

Your driver is only a month old, but bad driver updates can and do happen, so in some cases, while we often say 'get the latest driver', it can be the case that some version other than the latest may be the correct path. Just have to try via trial and error to see if another driver is more stable.

We will continue to monitor this and see if better GPU detection APIs can be used here, but we're using pretty standard stuff to identify the GPU and at this point, I'm doubtful our API is broken.

Wish the answer were more straightforward.

Oh, and we did specifically fix a pen tool path issue with the last segment of the pen tool working after saving a path in 22.4.2; be sure you are using 22.4.2. That System info is from 22.4.1.

Photoshop 22.4.2, not detecting GPU. This machine has an older Radeon so I'm not surprised that it isn't supported but it has been detected and works in older versions.

ATI has multiple drivers for this card, I've tried both that I can find (Catalyst and Crimson Edition beta.)

According to what I found, that card does not support Direct X 12.

It's true that Photoshop used to be able to work with those cards at one time, but increasing demands on GPUs from both Operating systems and today's Photoshop features have surpassed the breaking point for these older cards, and Photoshop can't use them.

Late to the party, but following your input of the Appdata folder I went searching for which specific file inside "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021" was causing the issue. Turns out it's "Adobe Photoshop 2021 Prefs".

Deleting this one will allow you to launch Photoshop and take advantage of your GPU JUST ONCE. Once closing the program though, PS writes another copy of the file and f*cks things over once again.

You have two solutions at this point:

1.  Delete "Adobe Photoshop 2021 Prefs" each and every time. Annoying. Slow. A pain.
2.  The final solution which hilariously enough worked wonders for me:
   
   1-  Open "Adobe Photoshop 2021 Prefs" with Wordpad or any text editing tools
   2-  Delete ALL the code inside the file
   3-  Literally Type "anything" in the code's place
   4-  Save this gem of a file.
   5-  Right-Click on "Adobe Photoshop 2021 Prefs" and Check "READ ONLY"
   6-  Apply and close. Launch Photoshop. Congratulation! You're now a better coder than most of Adobe's workforce!
   
   

Hilariously enough it works, and it works each and every time. Enjoy your GPU.
