P: Color Blend Mode displays wrong colors; sometimes crashes

The color blend mode is broken in CC2019  r.24

Open a new document in 16 bit Adobe RGB profile

Fill layer with 50% grey
Add new layer and fill with a straw color (R214 B 212 G173 in Adobe RGB)
Change blending mode to color


Result is green
Expected result - darker straw color

Workaround - enable legacy compositing

I was player around with what Dave mentioned above, after messing around with the blending modes changing them to different blend modes and just clicking on different options I noticed after a while they wouldn't change on the fly.
After they stop updating on the fly I noticed that zooming in and out doesn't work, this a is document zoomed in at 12800% as you can see the image hasn't zoomed in


And then when I go to Image > Image size Photoshop would crash, I was able to reproduce this quite easily

As mentioned enabling legacy compositing in preferences fixes for me too, no crashes and blending modes update on the fly and zoom works again

I'm also having this issue. Only on my Windows machine (Win 10 Home, v1803, OS 17134.345) . On Mac OS 10.13.6, it works as expected.

Just reproduced on Windows 7, and as a bonus, Photoshop crashed after I cycled through a few blend modes. The image never updated but the Navigator did. Crash report sent.

I can confirm this. Its easy to replicate on larger files. (i use a A3 Document in 600dpi havent testet the exact size when it breaks) When im using a smaller file (around 500px x 500px 72dpi) the zoom doenst break.

As you can see on the picture above. No layer is selected but an image appears.

Did you try the workaround proposed in this thread? Does it still have issues when "Legacy Compositing" is checked? 

Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing



Post your system specs as well to help Adobe employees debug this. Such as graphics card info, os version, etc.

Yes, works ok with Legacy Compositing turned on.

Windows 10 Family 64bits
Dell XPS 8910 with 16Gb of memory
Intel Core i7 6700

What I tried so far:

• uninstall video drivers with DDU;
• reset PS preferences;
• uninstall PS and cleaned everything with the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.

nothing worked. The application also crash without trace in the Event Viewer, I've sent 3 or 4 crash report in the past hours.

It happens with or without GPU enabled.
Using the "Legacy Compositing" solves this immediately.

I'm on Windows 10 1803 (build SO 17134.345), Intel i7 4770, ASUS Strix GTX 1080 with latest nVidia drivers (416.34).

Hope this helps to understand what the problem is.

The adjustment layer blend mode 'Color' isn't working properly.

I have both CC 2018 and CC 2019 installed on my Windows 10 System and the adjustment with solid colour using the 'Color' blend mode works correctly in CC 2018 but not in CC 2019.

Blending a red or cyan adjustment layer in blend mode 'Color' produces a grey monochrome effect on the image below. Blending adjustment layers in other colours in 'Color' blend mode produces weird colours. 

I've followed some threads here in Photoshop Family and enabled Legacy Compositing and that has rectified the problem in CC 2019. Why though?

I don't understand the first thing about Photoshop's compositing engine and why CC 2019 is different so would appreciate it if someone could explain. 

What is the difference between the legacy and non-legacy compositing?

My Graphics driver is up to date.
The issue is not present in CC 2018 which I still have installed.

It happens to me too.  Seems to happen any time the blend mode is set to Color, regardless of what kind of layer it is.  Interestingly enough, it sometimes shows up just fine at different zoom levels, but when I save the file Lightroom also shows the green squares in the image in my catalog. I hope this gets fixed soon because I'm assuming the new compositing is for faster performance!

I'm getting this too. I opened a PSD for a previous project and found my colors all wrong. I don't know what the new compositing engine is doing, but I don't like how the color blend mode has been affected. As other users have stated, it doesn't lead to predictable results.
I'll enable Legacy Compositing as well, but only to get through my current project.

I actually tried something like you described and it definitely produces strange results, though no crash on my end. If there's a color fill layer set to the Color blend mode and it's above a gray clouds layer, nothing happens even when it should. If another color fill layer is above that and its blending changes, either by different mode or opacity, then the results update to show the color blend mode for the previous layer working. But any redraw that happens on that layer causes the blend to be reverted back to the non-functioning one.

I'm having the same issue whenever a "color" or "hue" blend is applied to any object, shape, or layer, either as a layer or a layer style, in new projects and previously completed projects. Enabling legacy compositing fixes the issue.

I understand that new compositing engine (which is on by default in Ps CC 2019) can provide faster or improved compositing but it does not work with all video cards or GPUs yet which — is why the Legacy Compositing option is provided.

New Compositing works for me with both the Radeon HD 5770 and the Intel Iris cards — both my MacPro 2010 and my MBP-r are running on High Sierra.

When I select an area of an image, and turn that into a solid color overlay, and then change the blend mode to "Color", the colors are wrong. My image is RGB and I have selected filled pixels (not an empty area):

Engineering is working on a fix for this issue.  The workaround is to go to Preferences > Performance... and check "Legacy Compositing"
