P: CS5/CS6 text deletes when highlighted for editing on MacOS 10.9

Community Beginner ,
Oct 24, 2013 Oct 24, 2013

Since an update to OS 10.9 on a mid 2012 MBP 2.7 GHz i7 with 16 GB Ram, CS5 is not allowing me to update text. When I select the text tool type text and then return to the text and highlight it to change font or style, the text disappears, and is actually deleted. This happens when I select any text in any of my psd files, or when I create new files.

Howdy folks,

I believe we have the smoking gun for this one. So far every user I've spoken with finds the problem goes away when they turn off the dictation function in Mavericks. Further digging shows that the app works, but if a user attempts to record while Photoshop is not in a state to accept text, then the dictation app then stores some sort of + in its buffer, which is then added to anything selected, such as text you're trying to edit!

If anyone continues to have a problem, please le...

We have not seen anything like this in Win 8. On MacOS 10.9 it is caused by the dictation feature in the OS (and we are working with Apple to get that solved).

Ps CS6 - Nearly every time I highlight text, change fonts or point sizes in a text box, Photoshop deletes everything automatically inside that area. I then command Z and sometimes it's ok. It's very frustrating.

As others have posted previously, in iMac Mavericks OS X 10.9.3 and Photoshop CC 14.2.1, I fixed this stupid problem by turning off Dictation in System Preferences.

Has anyone written the book Apple Mavericks Annoyances? I'm about ready to go back to Windows given all the problems I've had with Mavericks...

Yeah, Mavericks didn't seem to have a beta period. They just unleashed it. Such a cool name for such a poor OS. They will eventually get right.

Hi Wendy,

A couple of things.

First, if you have Dictation on, turn it off.  There's a bug in it which triggers problems similar to this.

Second, there was a problem in one of the dot-releases of CS6 that caused the pointer to text layers to become corrupted.  The problem was fixed and the latest version of CS6 has the patch.  You should make sure you are running the very latest version.  The problem with the bug was that once a file had the problem, that particular file and any file with assets from it (copied layers, etc) would ALSO have the problem.

So, try downloading the very latest patch for CS6 and create a NEW document with Dictation turned off.  You should find the problem is gone.

Thanks,
David

Hi,

when I try to change text size or anything esle to text it changes and I can see it for a split second then it vanishes

It's probably me, not the program, but can someone tell me what Im doing wrong?

e.g. I create a new doc, 1200 by 150 ( to make a watermark)+type some text at say 24point, can see it fine, select the text and change to 18 point and it changes to a smaller size then poof! it's gone!

Im sure I have done this many times before with no problem - what am I doing wrong tis time?

your help would be much appreciated

Hi Simon,

Turn off your Dictation app.  It is a known bug with Mavericks.

Thanks,
David

I can't figure out if this is a bug or something I messed up, but it's highly alarming - whenever I try and change the text in a box, it immediately changes to a different font (a font that looks familiar but it's not visible long enough for me to recognize it) and then disappears completely when I finish the action. Sometimes words get rearranged. What do I do? It's really slowing down my work. I don't think it's a good description so I made a screen record of this happening. http://youtu.be/SFi2NjYyb_o
