P: Decoupling the presetted "usual" brush size from OS operating aids (macOS) [2016]

1. Photoshop 23.3.1 (and older!)

2. Mac OS 12.3.1 (and older!)

3. The Setting for brush size is put to "usual",

  • means the diameter of that temporary circle should be exactly the same as the brushstroke, independent of the selected hardness
  • Due to a large monitor, a slightly enlarged view of the mouse pointer can be helpful to some users.
Thanks to the Mac OS operating aids, you can customise this individually.

4. Now the size of the brushstroke and the diameter of that surrounded circle in Photoshop doesn't match any more.

  • While the operating aids of Mac OS display a larger image of the mouse pointer in a fixed solution, the brushstroke in Photoshop is variable and proportional to the zoom factor of the picture.
  • Unfortunatelly the OS operation aid zoom for the mouse pointer influences the diameter of that circle, too.
  • In this case it ist not possible to adjust the position of the brushstroke exactly, that's a pitty.

5. The best would be, if you can set the Ps brushsize decoupled from the OS operating aids. (Maybe a checkbox at that section, which allows you to de-/activate a professional view)

Thanks for listening. Best Frank

@marc21867922j5d2

I had this issue for several years and versions and found out through these forums that the problem was that I had changed my cursor size in System Prefs > Accessibility > Display. Setting the size to Normal fixed the Brush size issue in Photoshop. Can you try that?

Incorrect Brush size: On macOS, the painted result is smaller than the brush cursor size you see on screen, determine if you have an increased Cursor Size specified in your System Preferences: Accessibility > Display settings

Make sure it's set to "Normal"

Are you using a mac os?

If you are, it's probably that the system cursor size is set to something other than Normal.

Go to System Preferences>Accessibility>Display and set the Cursor size to Normal

This is the solution. I tried all the previous suggestions, but this did it. Weird that this is an effect of cursor size in apple system settings.

Accessibilty options are there for a reason - to provide accessibility for users who want a larger cursor for everyday uses. This is clearly a bug on Adobe's part to use the actual brush outline size regardless of the OS setting.

Hi Stefano.  Is this happening with mouse or tablet?  If the latter, what tablet are you using, and does it still happen with the mouse?

I've had this MacBook Pro M2 Pro for a few weeks now, and mostly just getting used to the OS.  Now I have started to use Photoshop I'm finding some aspects a bit weird.  I eventually worked out how to change brush size and hardness — I mean what's the deal with having a Cmd, Opt _and_  Ctrl modifiers?

Anyway, I am stuck on the brush not filling the cursor.

I have cursor set to Full Size in Preferences.

Everything is clear in Brush Settings.

Brush is fully hard.

I was going to try resetting Preferences, but it's the same with both release and beta versions.

This is a simulation of what I am seeing (done with my Windows system because screenshots appear to be a huge pain with Macs.

Jeff, I am so used to using Greenshot on my Windows system where I can choose the relevant shortcut to grab an area, full screen, or all three screens, and then choose what to do with it with this menu

image.png

If I need anotations, I open it in the editor where I have a bunch of options:

image.png

I originally tried starting this thread from the Mac using Shift Cmd 3, but was left wondering where the heck it had gone to, which turns out to be the desktop.  That left me thinking, now what am I going to do?  Shall I open it in Photoshop to add anotations?  And how long is that going to take?   So I gave up and moved to my Windows machine.

I thought I had installed Greenshot on the Mac, but now I come to think of it, while Greenshot is free for Windows, it costs a couple of dollars for the Mac version, and there was a problem with the payment screen, so I'll try again.  The thing is, I am too old and impatient to faff about, but the Mac will be my only option when traveling next month, so I probably get more comfortable with it.

Thanks again for the cursor fix.  That would have been a difficult one to track down without your very specific knowledge, and I had Googled before starting this thread.

The system settings IS NOT the correct answer. If we do as Adobe suggests, then you get stuck with interface elements that are the wrong size. This is a failure of Adobe to factor in display settings into their cursor size.

Adobe, it is 2024. The system size should be a factor, but not the sole factor, and a Photoshop user should not have to jump through hoops to have a cursor that appears accurately, while having a system interface that is usable at the size a person needs.

This is not a good solution, as it makes the cursor size tiny on systems with large resolutions.

Thanks for that, Trevor. I just purchased a copy off the App Store. I hope you have a payment method set up in your Apple account by now, then all is needed is username/password.

Apple has a built-in screenshot editor, very similar to the Windows Snip and Sketch.

Any task that involves a brush specifies a brush size.  Consider painting where you will see on the screen the circle for the brush.  If you just click to paint a circle of the the brush it comes out about half the size of the displayed brush circle.   Needless to say that leave you guessing where the paint will be applied.  This started a while ago so at this point I'm not sure when or why it started.

I am using a macbook pro, 2021 M1 max, Photoshop beta 26.1.0, and Sequoia 15.0.1.

I've finally figured out how to show a picture which is below.

Have you tried changing the cursor preferences? Perhaps resetting the tool or even the preferences could be a solution for all the weird issues.

Yes resetting the pointer size fixed the problem.  I changed the pointer size because I bought a 32" BenQ monitor and the pointer was very difficult to find.  I had no idea it would result in this problem.   Any suggestions on making the pointer easier to find on a large screen?

To all thank you for helping with this strange problem.
