P: Healing and Spot Healing Brush Lag

Contributor ,

In most recent 2018 update, healing and spot healing brush have become much less responsive, sometimes taking multiple seconds after completion of stroke to affect the image.

Late 2016 Macbook, up to date OS and Software

I've done the regular things like turning off OpenCL and changing other performance options... no change.
GIF framerate is sped up 2x

This should be resolved in the 19.0.1 update released last night. Please update Photoshop using the Creative Cloud desktop app, and let us know how it feels!

No bridge open here, and no network transfers or writing of any kind. When Lightroom syncs to the cloud things slow down considerably, but that's not happening much on my end.

So far I've been lucky... issue resolved after turning off smoothing, and still fine after 19.0.1!
Couple of thoughts though... I too have bridge open all the time, all work is on a series of thunderbolt RAIDs  and there are several Macs on the network (does this count as network?)
However I'm using Bridge 2017 (can't update lack of web galleries)
I also downgraded to ACR 9.12 - while using ACR 10 I had all the symptoms, freezes, unresponsive, and had to force quit over & over again!
So it seems to me as though there may be many issues at play here, and please Adobe, this isn't an attack, we all want to get to the bottom of this.
Finally, it's great to find so many who use Bridge "all day every day"!

> . So, my question is basically to know if all those people experiencing hangs use Bridge and if you jump over to Bridge during these hangs is it also unresponsive? >

For me it's Bridge that is unresponsive, not the other apps. It's just tolerable on an SSD (not good, but tolerable), but my desktop computer is older (soon to be mothballed, hopefully) and it's awful on that. I frequently have to force quit after the first launch of the day (I, too, run it all day long, using it extensively most days), in order to get it to start responding in any reasonable amount of time. It also hangs badly if left neglected for too long. I've wondered if it's related to having Firefox open most of the time as well, or if it might not have something to do with the Purge cache after X days command. I haven't been in the mood to troubleshoot more, but I think I'll turn off the Purge cache command and see if it doesn't improve, at least in returning to active duty after sitting idle, since that's when it's supposed to purge cache.

I'm afraid if I'm doing a lot of work with numerous folders, I'm unfaithful enough to 2018 to go back to 2017. No prize for speed there, either, but it doesn't hang while opening another folder for exceptionally long periods of time. I really wish Adobe would recognize the importance of Bridge and throw sufficient resources at it to redesign and fully modernize the app. They treat it like the unwanted stepchild instead of a critical bridge between all the apps.<sigh>

As for PS or CR, I didn't experience any serious lag until I tried mixing brush types. I'm not experiencing any slowdowns now, but I'm still on El Capitan.

I went back to 2017  - won't upgrade until resolved. I didn't soup up my machine for speed only to have it feel like a G3 ... this bug can turn 5 min into an hour...

I just wanted to clarify that I believe that the issue with the initial lag that this thread started on has been resolved with the latest update to 19.0.1. Because I had that performance drop so soon after I installed the update I assumed it was the bug not being fixed.

I also want clarify that I don't have to be accessing a file from a network location, but it seems if there is any hang or disconnect of a mapped network dive it totally hoses Bridge and any running Adobe app. So I always know where certain people have left the office for the day.

I'm definitely going to start a new thread. It seems like these hangs vary in situation for many users, but they are happening and with greater frequency than I remember with any of the CS versions.

I'm having the same problem with the spot healing brush.  It works fine in my CS6 version and 2017, but not in 2018 version 19.0.0.  I can't download 19.0.1 version.  I also rebooted my computer, I'm using Mac 27" 2013, Sierra 10.12.6, Memory 32 GB, and Graphic Card NVIDIA Get Force GTX 775M 2048 MB.  What do I need to to fix my problem.

stop blaming others and work on fixing this.
this is a version 2018 error and has nothing to do with settings or hardware.

I solved my problem.  I found out for some reason my spacing was set to 1000% on my healing brush, and when I returned it to 1 % everything returned to normal operation.

Hi Tanja,

What OS are you on? What version of Photoshop are you running (Help > System Info). This should have been resolved with a fix in 19.0.1, so if you are still seeing this behavior please tell us what steps you are taking when it happens.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Dominika,

Sorry for the frustration, but there was a fix for this issue. If you're still having this problem it's likely coming from somewhere else. Would you mind starting a new thread? Please include your OS and version of Photoshop. If you want to be extra helpful please paste the contents of Help > System Info into the thread too.

Hannah

Hi Hannah,

I am on a iMac 5K Retina 27 Inch 2017 computer and I am getting all sorts of slow downs primarily using any tools using a brush, zooming in and out, and hiding and showing layers. I cleared out my preferences too.

I don't see a 19.0.1 update for Mac, there is only 19.0 - which isn't working.

Any other solutions? I am still on Sierra, should I upgrade to High Sierra?

Thanks!
Beth

Hi Beth,

Sorry you're seeing slowdowns. If you don't see any updates available in your Creative Cloud desktop app you probably are up to date. To be sure:

Go to Help > System Info and verify that the first line says "20171103.r.190." While that window is up would you copy and paste the contents so I can see the specs on your system?

Upgrading to High Sierra would not likely help with your slowdowns.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

Thanks for the quick reply! Here is what the info says below. At one point at have my preferences set with "Memory used by Photoshop: 85%" with a Firewire Harddrive as scratch disk space (that has a ton of space), but that didn't help.

For comparison. I am working on my MacBook Pro Late 2015 with 16 GB of RAM, using Photoshop CC 2017 and it is running smoother than my iMac with more power and RAM. It is a huge file, and my MacBook Pro isn't speedy, but it is work-able. The brushes and zoom work. The slow part is the hide/show layers, but it is faster than my iMac.

Thank you!
Beth

Hi Beth,

Thanks for the information. You are already running 19.0.1 (keep an eye out for another update soon). Also I'm checking into possible causes for a slowdown with the rest of your information and I'll get back with you shortly.

Regards,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,
As per my previous post, 19.0.1 seems to have cured my healing brush lag.
However I am now seeing quite a bit of lag when using a brush having made a layer mask - just thought I would flag this.

Slightly related to this - I'm sure there are many of us power users would love to see a "white paper" on the subject of Photoshop and performance. What is the role processor core and speed v graphics card and RAM. Along with all the various "settings" within Photoshop preferences.
Which is more important to Photoshop cores, processor speed, graphics card, RAM?
Many years ago Adobe produced a great "White Paper" on Raw files - could we have something like this please?

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear you're seeing lagging performance again. Would you mind making a screen capture of what you're seeing? I'll submit it for investigation.

Regarding a white paper - does this help? This was updated in September, so it's fairly recent:

That performance guide looks very interesting - I will give it good study!

I'll try to capture something on the lag issue, but earlier I turned off smoothing in brush preferences, and things seem to be normal now!

Many thanks,
P

Hi Beth,

In Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings can you uncheck "Use Graphics Processor," restart Photoshop and see if it makes a difference? This isn't a setting you would normally want to keep, just a test to help narrow down the issue.

Thanks,
Hannah

> Regarding a white paper - does this help?>

Having read this paper multiple times over the years (as it's updated), I know I'm stuck with my old slow computer until Apple gives me a choice, but this was one of the key reasons I wanted to have sets (groups) in my asset panels for ALL the assets. Brushes was the most important, but Patterns is next in importance.

It's really made a difference that I can easily trash and restore my brush sets (not to mention easily make those sets) so I don't bog my computer down completely. I'm still going to have problems with 1.5 GB+ files (on disk, maybe under 1GB) that have 60+ layers and masks on everything. But the remarks on purging (I have a KBSC for that) and getting rid of assets have helped me muddle through with my ancient Mac Pro.

One quibble I have with the Performance paper is it says turn on Automatic Updates in your System software.  Best, imo, is to pay attention to notifications. Auto-updating is playing with fire. Let someone else be the guinea pig for a few days, unless you just love the risk—maybe because you're like the engineers who wrote that Performance paper.<G> None of your regular OS news sites reports  significant problems, then update.

Hi Hannah,

Thanks so much for your help and the performance specs and tips. I'll be checking that out.

So, I turned off the Graphic processor and it has seemed to help. I can zoom in and out of the image much more quickly, I can hide and show layers with faster response, and I don't get any brush lag. (I use the brushes with a mask too, by the way.)

I was desperate yesterday and uninstalled 2018 and reinstalled 2017. PS CC 2017 worked more smoothly than 2018. I reinstalled 2018 for this test...with the Graphics Processor off, 2018 works much, much better and possibly even better than 2017.

Thanks!

Hi Beth,

Okay great! Good to know it's your GPU, so let's make sure your driver is up-to-date. The download for your driver is available here (should be able to auto-detect, but if not look in About This Mac and then choose your download from this link):

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Then recheck "Use Graphics Processor" and restart Photoshop to see if that solves it.

Thanks,
Hannah

It seems to me that turning off the GPU is not at all an ideal solution, and only a temporary work around. Using the GPU is a massive plus to speed and performance, so if that's the only solution to making PS work correctly, it would seem to me to be a very strong shortcoming of Photoshop. In my own work, if the only solution was to not use the GPU, it would simply not be a solution due to the scale and volume of images I process.

Just my two cents.
