P: Liquify with a small marquee selection on a Silicon Mac returns no result.

PS 23.4.2, on a Silicon Mac Studio running Monterey 12.5, As a rule, I've always made a marquee selection slightly larger than the area I plan on liquifying, as historically it takes a great deal less resources and time to bring up the liquify window on large files. In my new silicon Mac set up, liquify goes through all the motions, giving me the proper preview, but upon completion, it returns no result. In frustration, I had resorted to screen capping the preview at 100% and pasting it in my image. Finally I discovered that using a much larger marquee selection would actually return my result. It's a viable workaround, but liquify should work in ANY marquee of any size, as it still does in the most current version on an Intel Mac.

Strange... Yes it works when I press Option and click on Liquify...
But not very practical when we have to work like that... I usually use shortscut to liquify...

If holding down option works, that means there is an issue with the GPU. Option forces liquify to use the CPU.

Let's check a couple of things with the GPU:

1. Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and check "Disable Native Canvas" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?
2.  If #1 doesn't help, go back and uncheck "Disable Native Canvas" - then go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?

So I tried the two options and  none works. But I tried an other thing just to see, and when I  unchek "use a graphic processor" (sorry my PS is in french so I'm not sure about the translation) in Preferences > Performance, the liquify works even with small selection...

Maybe I can work like this until the problem is solved with an other version...

The Liquify filter in Photoshop v. 24 will not apply changes. I can select an image or a portion of an image, make changes using the liquify tools, but once I hit OK, the changes will not apply to the layer. I have to go backward to Photoshop 23.X, open the document there, use the liquify filter there and OK and save the changes.  I am Using MacOS Monterey 12.5.1 on an M1 Max 16" MB Pro with 64GB RAM.

It is possible that you need more RAM, although 64 MB should be sufficient.

First try converting the layer to a Smart Object layer and then apply the Liquify filter.

Barbara, RAM is not the issue. If I go backward to PS 23.x, Liquify works fine. It's V24 that is the problem. Seriously, if PS needs mor RAM than that - it's time to s crap the program. The last file I was working on was a 35Meg file. Not very large. AND i selected a small region that maybe amounted to 1/20th of the layer. The file had only 1 layer in it. And I had quit PS and restarted it and reopened the file so there was nothing extra in RAM due to history.

Would you be able to post a screen shot of the whole Liquify dialog. I would like to understand what is being set so that I may replicate as close to possible what you are using.

I am on, Mac OS 12.6.1 - I only mention this because sometimes these updates contain disply (gpu) driver updates. It may not fix the issue but is a consideration we look at while reproducing the problem.

A message I composed didn't come thru. I apologize if this ends up as a double post.

I had a coworker create a jsx script that disables the GPU for selections smaller than 728 x 728, then turns it back on after returning a result. Otherwise I would have been be stalking this thread regularly.

If anyone wants the jsx script, let me know.

It's been four months, no fix, not even in 24.0.1

Here to make known I've had this same problem for months, pre and post my Macbook Pro M1 Max.

These two suggestions from this thread produce results with small selections for me:

1. Option + Liquify

2. Turning off "Use Graphics Processor".

I'm choosing option #1 so I can keep the Graphics Processor checked on, until it's all sorted out.

Option + Liquify does disable the graphics acceleration for just that Liquify session. My script leaves the acceleration on if the selection is greater than 800 x 800 px, just above the threshold where PS returns no result. This way, you can still reap the benefits of the GPU on the big selections, where you really need it. Then you just remap your favorite shortcut to it.

Bug is still here, I am running Ventura / PS2024 / Mac Studio.

Small selection does not work, make the selection much bigger and it works.
