P: LrC (11.0.1) Edit in PS2022 fails because Photoshop could not be launched - Error Message

Since updating my subscription to Adobe for Photographers (Photoshop & Lightroom) I am having an issue when launching Photoshop 2022 from Lightroom v11.

If I right click on the image I'm working on in Lightroom and select 'Edit in Photoshop 2022' I am asked whether or not I want to edit a copy or the original (as I would expect).

If I select "Edit Original" everything works to plan, the image opens in Potoshop and I can proceed.

However:

If I select either "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" or "Edit a Copy" I have an issue.
I can see the copy being created on the Film Strip at the bottom of the Lightroom screen, Photoshop starts up and stops at the launch screen but the image fails to open in photoshop.

If I wait for 2 or 3 minutes I recieve an error message in Lightroom: "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2022 could not be launched"

If I then select 'OK' in the error message the image immediately opens in Photoshop and I can work away.

This morning an followup update to Photoshop 2022 (to Ver: 23.0.1) was installed and it made no difference.
This afternoon Camera Raw also had a followup update to Version 14.0.1 and it has made no difference.
The problem is still there.

Is this a bug or is there a some way I can fix the problem.

I'm using a Windows PC - Running Win 10 and it has 24gb of RAM

Based upon customer reports, most issues have been reported fixed by either the remediation steps and/or the installation of Photoshop 23.1, released Monday, December 13, 2021.

Thank you for your patience.

Greetings all,

Update: Please install Photoshop 23.1, released on 12/13/2021 and let us know if we are still seeing the issue after updating Photoshop.

Workaround:

To all those who may be experiencing this issue. Our investigations have found that, in some cases, GPU detection is causing this issue.

A similar issue was resolved in this thread by following these instructions:

Hi there,

We're sorry for the trouble where you're unable to edit in Photoshop from Lightroom Classic. Would you mind telling us the exact version of Photoshop you're using?

Make sure that you're signed in Photoshop.

You can also try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps mentioned here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Please backup your actions, brushes, etc. before you reset the preferences. You can check: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

Let us know if that helps.

Regards,

Tarun

Thank you @GoldingD for yor advices and sorry for my late answer.

Problem resolved, I contacted Adobe Support Team via chat and explainded them my problem and making sure I had done everything ok updating the last versions of LR,PS and ACR (I only had to click the button install) they didn´t know what happened, so I decided to let them control my laptop remotely. After almost 1hour double checking, cleaning old files manualy and installing the programs again they told me that the problem was that I had an old ACR version not compatible with the new versions of LR and PS which seems weird to me due to ACR it installs itself automatically when you install PS.

Anyway everithing works fine now.

Thanks again.

What is also odd, is that if an older version of ACR is called from Lightroom Classic (ACR is doing the rendering with this command, not LR) and it's too old to apply newer functionailty, it should pop an error that you need to update ACR. But the good news is you got this all sorted out.

When the link between the two application fails, I usually recommend using the CC application to uninstall both (KEEP prefs). Then reinstall Photoshop first, followed by Lightroom Classic. Better?

I'm having the same problems since the upgrade to Lightroom and Photoshop. I hope this can be resolved very soon.

Open an image from Lightroom classic to edit in Photoshop 2022, gives the error after some minutes "The file could not be edited because Photoshop 2021 could not be launched". The image sometimes does eventually open in photoshop, sometimes it does not.

In lightroom it creates a duplicate image with extension ".tif" and shows it in the library.

I have fully uninstalled all applications and used the Adobe CC Cleaner to uninstall all settings as well.

Even after installing this issue persists.

I continue to have problems opening PS from LrC (all updated to current versions 23.0.1 and 11.0 respectively, although bizarrely PS "Help, About Photoshop" does not open).  I can Edit in "Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2022" but *cannot* "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop".

If you quit Lightroom and Photoshop, then launch Photoshop first, does edit in Photoshop work without error from Lightroom?

Hello everybody that replied.

I have discovered that the Adobe Camera Raw versions were different between Photoshop V23.0.1 and Lightroom Classic V11.0.1 so I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (currently V14.0.1) and just installed it (I did not remove the previous versions) and now everything is working correctly. Files can be sent from Lightroom Classic to Photoshop and back correctly with no crashes or errors.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions, they were reallly helpful.

Regards, Graphicalman.

Thanks, I have reset PS preferences and updated the LrC 11.0.1, but it still will not open as Smart Object - and continues to be very slow opening from LrC (not as a SO).

Another observation, from the moment I select to edit in photoshop, it takes 100s to show the message "The file could not be edited because Photoshop 2022 could not be launched". After pressing ok on the message it shows "Preparing file for editing" on the top left in lightroom, once that is complete it opens the image in photoshop. I'm working with Nikon Raw files (.nef extension).

If i try to open the a tif file to edit in photoshop from lightroom, it opens fine.

Hi jeffreyn84962779

I am having the exact same problems, unable to launch PS2022 from LR.  I cannot open as layers either. This is very frustrating. It started straight after loading the latest LR and PS update a few weeks ago.

There has  been a PS update last week and a LR update yesterday, the problems are still there.

I cannot do this, but there is an update waiting from AMD. However, Dell will NOT let me do this. So I have changed settings in the Radeon settings to have each controlled by the application, only in Photoshop 2022. However, I cannot do some things like filter/oil paint: nothing happens. So, actually I am still a little stuck.

I just developed the same problem with the upgrade to LRC 11.0.1 and PS 23.01.   After 5 hr on the Adobe support there was still no solution.

After crashing again, I did go to AMD Radeon settings and changed all of them to Use application settings. I did leave Open CL on, and PS opens but there are still things I cannot do. They aren't greyed out, but nothing happens when I do them.
