Since updating my subscription to Adobe for Photographers (Photoshop & Lightroom) I am having an issue when launching Photoshop 2022 from Lightroom v11.

If I right click on the image I'm working on in Lightroom and select 'Edit in Photoshop 2022' I am asked whether or not I want to edit a copy or the original (as I would expect).

If I select "Edit Original" everything works to plan, the image opens in Potoshop and I can proceed.

However:

If I select either "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" or "Edit a Copy" I have an issue.
I can see the copy being created on the Film Strip at the bottom of the Lightroom screen, Photoshop starts up and stops at the launch screen but the image fails to open in photoshop.

If I wait for 2 or 3 minutes I recieve an error message in Lightroom: "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2022 could not be launched"

If I then select 'OK' in the error message the image immediately opens in Photoshop and I can work away.

This morning an followup update to Photoshop 2022 (to Ver: 23.0.1) was installed and it made no difference.
This afternoon Camera Raw also had a followup update to Version 14.0.1 and it has made no difference.
The problem is still there.

Is this a bug or is there a some way I can fix the problem.

I'm using a Windows PC - Running Win 10 and it has 24gb of RAM

Based upon customer reports, most issues have been reported fixed by either the remediation steps and/or the installation of Photoshop 23.1, released Monday, December 13, 2021.

Thank you for your patience.

Greetings all,

Update: Please install Photoshop 23.1, released on 12/13/2021 and let us know if we are still seeing the issue after updating Photoshop.

Workaround:

To all those who may be experiencing this issue. Our investigations have found that, in some cases, GPU detection is causing this issue.

A similar issue was resolved in this thread by following these instructions:

Well, I was going to try to uninstall and reinstall after I saved everything, but I see that this has gone on for a VERY LONG time and others have tried that and still failing, so I don't believe I will. It appears bad code, and no one to fix it. And we are just all out of luck. In Adobe Lightroom Classic, my heavy AMD card shows, and I can set the settings to custom and all is fine. Someone just has to write good code and fix this so it will work in Adobe Photoshop. It all worked before this version 23.0.2, and we are losing money every day, that we cannot work. Covid-19 is not the excuse that people will believe.

Are you saying that if you alter GPU settings to custom, or turn it off, the problem stops?

With this version 23.0.2, and we are losing money every day, that we cannot work. Covid-19 is not the excuse that people will believe. I can open it, but the box comes up: Driver update recommended. Driver is out of date. Open CL unavailable. Open GL available. DirectX available. above required VRam. However, in the Performance Settings, the AMD card is recognized, and if checked, advanced, open CL is greyed out. Bad code writing. If you have settings I need to change and then this will work, ok. If not, write new code, so it will work like Adobe Lightroom Classic does. right now only a few things will work, OR it freezes up, and have to CRTL/Alt/Delete and close PS

No update yet from Adobe for Adobe Photoshop. Just think, Microsoft spent 11 months with Google creating Edge/Chrome, now Edge. And wrote code day and night. We are all struggling to make PS work and it does not. And Adobe is not working night and day to write code. How come?

OK, let me chime in here for a moment. A while back, I was having an issue of PS 23.X.X only seeing my C:\ drive for a scratch disk. It would not recognize my other internal SSD and external drive. I incorporated a “solution” by granting PS administrator privileges. That worked, unfortunately, it generated the issue of this thread where I received the error message: The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2022 could not be launched.

After chasing my tail for a while, I found a solution that resolved both problems by disabling the EnableLUA in the registry. Not happy about this from a security standpoint; but it is easy to switch back and forth when I need to use LR and PS.

Here is the blueprint for anyone who wants to see if it helps them.

First, back up your current registry.

Hit Win R and enter regedit, then OK. This takes you to the Registry Editor. From there, you follow the file chain on the left-hand portion of the window. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Once you get to System, on the right-hand side window you will see a listing of settings. Go to EnableLUA, left click it and you will activate a dialog box. Set the Value Data to 1. Hit OK.

Restart your machine.

My current configuration consists of:  an AMD Ryzen 3600x with an Nvidia Quadro K5000 (4GB VRAM), Win 10 Pro, and have 16 GB RAM. Both LR and PS are up to date.

Good luck!

You can just change to UAC in Control Panel, to off, and then you don't have to change the registry. However, Adobe PS will NOT work correctly  until the code writers fix this problem, and make it compliant with graphics as it is in Adobe Lightroom Classic, PLEASE.

Adobe: what about this since we are still waiting on an expert code writing fix: do a registry tweak to fix this problem with OpenCl:

1. Click Run, and regedit or regedt32
2. In the Registry Editor, open HKEY_CURRENT_USER
3. Open Software
4. Open Adobe
5. Open Photoshop
6. Use latest number. Mine was 160.0 Right-click on the number, and select NEW-->DWORD Value and name it AllowOldGPUS.
7. Now there is a new DWORD Value named AllowOldGPUS.
Double click on it and set Value Data to 1
Restart Photoshop and go to Preferences-->Performance and enable OpenCl

I will not proceed with this until Adobe says YES it is OK.

This problem is far from being fixed.

Today I have metodically uninstalled all 'Adobe' applications from my PC (Photoshop, Lightroom, Creative Cloud and Adobe Genuine Service)
I then rebooted the PC, logged into My Adobe Account on the WEB.

I reinstalled Adobe Creative Cloud allowing it to reinstall Adobe Genuine Service.

I opened Creative Cloud and from there I installed Photoshop and Lightroom (in that order).

Rebooted the PC.

I Then launched Lightroom and tried to edit an image using Edit in Photoshop 2022. I got exactly the same result as before.

After 100 sec I got an error message in Lightroom saying it couldn't open Photoshop. I  OK'd the error message and then the image immediately opened in Photoshop.

This problem is going on for over a month and its time we got some action from Adobe.

For what it is worth, I let Adobe remotely work on my computer.  3 people, probably over 8 hours. Ultimately they used an older version of photoshop (maybe two) and it works fine now.  Only issue they told me is my graphics card may no longer be supported by Photoshop.

This. When I replaced my old graphics card, this problem went away.

Having said that, previous versions of LR/PS worked fine, even though the card was not supported for some functions.

Kaley6C19 - thats an interesting response that you got from Adobe. Thanks for the input..

I have seen no mention of my graphics card not being supported. If that's Adobe's response it begs the question, will they still charge us the monthly subscription if we cant get further updates.

This message is for any customer who is attempting to send to Photoshop from Lightroom Classic 11.0.1 or Lightroom Desktop 5.0.

To date, we have not been able to reproduce this issue at Adobe. We need your help!

If you are still experiencing this issue and have tried each step of the following with not resolution, our engineering team would like to connect with you.

Try the following steps in the exact order.

After each step check to see if PS will launch from Lightroom - do not do all five without checking between each step.

  1. Verify Camera Raw is up to date 14.0.1
  2. Reset Photoshop Preferences
  3. Remove old installations of Photoshop
  4.  Reinstall Photoshop by removing it and installing it again.  (23.0.2)
  5.  Reset Lightroom Preferences
  6.  Reinstall Lightroom by removing it and installing it again. (11.0.1 - Classic or 5.0 Desktop)

If after performing these 6 steps you still do not have the ability to launch PS successfully from inside of either Lightroom Desktop client, and are willing to set up a sharing session with an Adobe engineer, please send me a private message via this forum and mention PS-77917 in the subject line.

Thank you for your assistance in our ongoing investigation.

This is NOT the question. The question is: Many people can open it, but the box comes up: Driver update recommended. Driver is out of date. Open CL unavailable. Open GL available. DirectX available. above required VRam. However, in the Performance Settings, the AMD card is recognized, and if checked, advanced, open CL is greyed out. Bad code writing. If not, write new code, so it will work like Adobe Lightroom Classic does. right now only a few things will work, OR it freezes up, and have to CRTL/Alt/Delete and close PS. Do we need to alter the registry as I have found, or do we dare do this in the Windows registry.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography I already spent >2 hours with an Adobe engineer troubleshooting. I documented some of the steps they suggested in the other thread. At first, it seemed like they helped. I was only experiencing the issue about 25% of the time. But not it's more common again. I also tried a complete erase & install of my operating system (OS 12 Monterey) and started from scratch with the Adobe apps. I'm still having the issue. That tells me it's a bug.

So, performed the reccommended steps, in the recommended order, checking results after each step, with no change for me, and with the following current status:

1. With a raw file selected in Lightroom Classic, I choose edit in Adobe Photoshop 2022.

2. Long delay results (approx. 1 min.38 sec), Photoshop does load, but Lightroom returns "can't open in Photoshop. . . " error message in Lightroom, and process stops.

3. Upon closing the error message in Lightroom, the process continues, with the "preparing file to edit. . . " progress bar showing in Lightroom

4. Photo eventually does successfully load in Photoshop after approx. 50 sec. delay.

Would be happy to set up a sharing session if interested, and will PM you.

I actually ordered a new graphics card to test with after determining that within PS2022 my graphics card was no longer supported. It is coming in today so I’ll know pretty quickly if the graphics card assists with the issue.

Things have gone from bad to worse.  In trying to resolve the issue of not being able to open PS 2022 from LR, I followed the suggestions in this thread:

Reset PS preferences

Uninstalled and reinstalled PS.  There did not appear to be any issues with the install at any time.

Now I can no longer open PS by itself, which previously was fine.  I get the dreaded blank screen.  When I edit preferences to Use Legacy New Doc diaglog, and NO Auto show Home Screen, I can't exit PS normally.  I've had to use Task Manager to close PS.  The preference changes don't seem to be saved, and I continue to get a blank screen.

I've also tried renaming th UXP directory to UXP which did not help either.

Needless to say this is getting extremely frustrating.  The PS application is now completely non functional.

Running LR 11.0.1 and PS 23.0.2 Monterey on MAC Mini M1

Selecting Open As Layers in PS doesn't work.  PS starts if not running but no images appear.  I'm new to this but it looks like this is an issue going back years.  Does it actually work?  Thanks.
