P: Not detecting older GPU's

Community Expert ,
Jun 17, 2020 Jun 17, 2020

I have a AMD HD8490 GPU and installed Photoshop version 21.2 and the GPU is not been detected, I'm not alone as I've come across other people with the same issue on the Photoshop community forum.
Reverting back to 21.1.3 fixes the issue
Why does Adobe release updates to fix bugs and then break something else with the same update.

Photoshop's GPU requirements have increased for 22.0. Try the solutions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#ProgramErroropeningfiles

If your card is not supported you may need to upgrade your graphics card.

For example @Deleted User's card is very old and is not supported:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cc-gpu-card-faq.html#Unsupportedgraphicscards

It scores less than 200 on this benchmark: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/directCompute.html

It is still not working for me too. I am running this inside VMware.  The 3rd previous release and before that, all works.  Is Adobe going to fit it?

@Philip Chong: You wrote "Its been two release and Adobe still did not want to fix this!  Terrible company!"

Unless you personally work for Adobe AND are a manager level employee, there is no way that you could have any inkling about what Adobe "Wants"

Small minds do not offer constructive thought nor comment; often on the web, those people hide in the bushes and snipe.

Dave@EDS About what exactly ? The issue here is that older GPUs are not detecting on Photoshop 21.2+ and they are releasing updates without even caring about this major issue.

I was not sure to what your three letter comment was referring. There was a second issue afloat, which you may or may not have seen: when I tried to reply to your earlier comment, a Warning popped up, probably not originating with your system, and most likely a hack against the provider GetSatisfaction which is used to host this forum for Adobe. It may be fixed now, but the first instance I encountered was when trying to reply to your posting; there were numerous other MeToo remarks by other readers, and I think it turned out that they were encountering this Warning at random and not related to a specific user. So, I was not sure whether your three letter comment was related to that!

The problem needs to be resolved urgently.
Without a GPU, Photoshop cannot even properly redraw its screen (on Win7). It is enough to press Tab to verify this.
Are Adobe programmers now writing Photoshop exclusively in scripts?
It feels like Yes.

Adobe do not care!

They know everyone wants them and they are too big to fail.

This is sad!

I don't personally know anyone who works for Adobe so I can't say just how complex their regression testing should be for PS.  All I CAN say is from an end-user's perspective it seems one of the driving reasons to move to the subscription model is so that the user base can be their unpaid beta testers.  I would be happy to be a beta tester for a discount on my subscription since this costs me time (aka money) with every Adobe update to one of their apps.  One of the reasons I switched away from Premier years ago.  Those bugs were costing me BIG MONEY and almost lost me my best client.

Jim Setzer:  No, Jim, it is Not "all about you." Switching to SAAS business model was clearly done to smooth out cash flow and make things more predictable / manageable for the corporation and has absolutely nothing to do with beta-testing.

Apple actually sparked the switch to SAAS with their App Store model. Everybody else HAD to jump in as well lest Apple become the only purveyor of software.

With the old "purchase once and then upgrade occasionally" revenues were unpredictable,  yet support expenses were continuous, even for customers that would buy once and stay with the same version forever. I see postings on this forum for people using Photoshop 6! That predates the earliest CS versions even, yet there is an expectation that Adobe will forever keep "the tires on old Betsy" until that user goes into a Home.

Adobe is not the only company to get smart about this management; SAAS is becoming the prevalent model, and it works well, both for the users and for the companies.

Would you prefer to pay enormous upfront pricing and then have enormous Upgrade expense? Or, would you like to be able to budget a little subscription fee monthly and forever receive updates as you choose and at no additional expense?

Consider also that there are a lot of people including students and hobbyists that can enjoy this powerful program suite that would not have been able to pop for a big initial investment. I see a lot of those folks posting here, the younger (sometimes angry) set who are outraged that they cannot do Full Screen stuff on their phones! If they had not had access financially to Photoshop and Lightroom because of cost, they wouldn't even be here, in early stages of learning, to become more advanced.

DISCLOSURE: I do not nor have I ever, worked for Adobe.

"DISCLOSURE: I do not nor have I ever, worked for Adobe."

But you've decided to be the forum policeman. I see. Every forum's got one.

I'm not interested in what you have to say. I just want Adobe to fix this hideous, basic bug that cripples ACR and photoshop.

Is Adobe going to fix this GPU thing?  They also need to fix this : when I go to the 360 world, I have to drop to 8 bit.  In 16 bit, its over saturated. This bug has been there for years!

Adobe always break things with every update.

What type of company is this?

Philip Chong: You have posted this MANY times, never with any constructive comment, and always with a back-hand comment such as this time where you said "Adobe always break things with every update. What type of company is this?"

Those remarks add exactly nothing to the discussion and are likely to result in zero response from Adobe.

You also make the presumptive statement that what you are reporting is an actual Bug, when it is very likely that it is not and that older machines need to keep up with the software world.

Why not support older GPU?  We are not going near Windows 3.11 yet? Older, not oldest. Gee wheeze!

I don't think that this is about older GPUs. If it was deliberate, Adobe would have announced it or changed the system recommendations. I think the thread title is wrong. There are just some circumstances where the software now no longer detects GPUs.

And they don't seem to be bothering to fix it very quickly.

Philip Chong:  It is a matter of responsible corporate governance. You must understand that support for (including tech support) people using older software versions or older hardware is (1) costly, and (2) has an ever diminishing audience and almost no addition to the revenue stream.

The reality is that the life cycle of new computers in terms of tech obsolescence is very short. Unfortunately, users on limited budgets DO get squeezed as things evolve and their systems need upgrade. Watch the new product releases hitting the market this fall! There will be many, and many new components .

What I am asking is Adobe should enable it.  Let us decide that our hardware is old enough and we should move on.

Right now I am using two version of PS.  The latest version because I cannot get into the 360 world because of the GPU hardware disabled.

Then I am using the third version earlier where I can get into the 360 world in PS.

Isn't this fun ???

Philip Chong:  you wrote "What I am asking is Adobe should enable it"

That is exactly what I was trying to convey: there comes a point where the corporation must decide whether to spend the dollars to try  and keep the wheels on Old Betsy forever in order to accommodate a tiny population of customers, whose hardware version is old.

Perhaps you would support the idea for the company to offer custom alteration to enable use of old stuff but charge you at cost the thousands of dollars that takes? I sure wouldn't! That would cost more than buying a LOT of new PCs!

I just solved it for myself by reverting back to 21.1.3 after reading about it in another thread a few minutes ago because I was still having issues with my GTX 960 GPU not being detected and advanced features grayed out (scrubby zoom, opencl, lighting effects, etc.) while it was alright a few months ago. So that means no fix yet, lets see!

For now, 21.1.3 is working superfast with all the advanced features.
