P: Nvidia users are dropping out of GPU mode when using type tool

So yes i know i am using a very old graphics card the 770M but things were working just fine until a few days ago when this new patch hit. Still running windows 10 like before.

Now i can't find a way to get scrubby zoom to work again, its just greyed out. Anyone else having issues?

Graphics processor is ticked on and under advanced settings use openCL and anti alias guides and paths are turned on. I have restarted my computer. I have reinstalled my graphics driver. Anything i can think of

By selecting the text tool and either clicking on an empty space to start new text or trying to edit existing texts, my photoshop screen gets all black and I can't work with text. If I press the Esc key, it exits text mode and everything gets back to normal.

Sorry you're having this problem, Paulo.  Just checking, have you upgraded to the latest version of Photoshop v.23.5.0?

One solution that might clear this issue up, try resetting your preferences.

• Quit Photoshop
• Hold down the following keyboard shortcut and launch Photoshop:
  macOS: command + option + shift
  Windows: ctrl + alt + shiftOpen Photoshop.

• Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

Be sure to backup your actions, presets, etc. before your start.

Turns out the preference 'Deactivate native canvas' leads to this issue, so all that is needed is to uncheck that (which deleting preferences also does, but that option will also wipe out all preferences, including those not a factor in this problem). Sometimes other preferences are worth saving, so this detail helps, but often no customizations are made and wiping all out is just fine as well.

i could confirm that Scrubby zoom issue is still no fixed on 23.5.1 update.

After many tests, i found that scrubby zoom stops working and its gray out when i select the type tool and start to edit a text.

I have an Asus RTX3090 OC so this is not a GPU compatibility  issue etc.

Please Adobe fix this issue, as i cant work !

1. Please send us System Info; would be very helpful for us to see
2. Are the steps as simple as 'click into a text layer, scrubby zoom stops working', or does it require more fiddling?
3. If you check 'Deactivate native canvas' in Preferences > Technology Previews, does the situation improve?
4. What color profile are you working with?

Hi everyone. I noticed this bug after 22 version.
Whenever I start the "Type Tool", my Photoshop loses its GPU acceleration properties. It becomes slow, the Zoom feature is not smooth and there's no anti-aliasing on the image.

I tried to deactivate the "Native Canvas" feature, but Photoshop became really slow and everything started flickering as well.

I'm currently using the latest version of Photoshop (v23.5.1) on Windows 10, 16GB RAM, and GTX 1060 with the latest driver.

@jane-e I think this issue is totally related to the "Deactivate Native Canvas" option on Technology Previews.
When this option is off, the Type Tool works perfectly. However, the entire Photoshop gets a bit slow and all menus and popups start flickering.
When it's on, Photoshop works fine. However, when the Type tool is activated, Photoshop starts to lag as I described before.

Thanks @davidz38719464  for the info. @Seth A additionally shared in direct messages to me that working in that mode also has the issue where clicking into text falls out of GPU mode, so that is an issue as well.

Good news, the current Beta of Photoshop fixes the issue where Deactivate Native Canvas is checked and the GPU mode fails, so if you would like to try downloading and installing the latest Beta (under the Beta tabs in the Creative Cloud app), then you can try it out; let us know if you're working or not!

Side note: the Beta will not overwrite the retail version when installed; it will install to a separate Beta folder, and be managed separately. It might take over some file associations at the system level if it's installed last, but you can always reinstall retail or uninstall Beta if you would like to revert back to the retail version of Photoshop in the meantime.

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Hi Mark,

I was a part of the Feature Camp team involved in reviewing new features of
the Beta version. Unfortunately, it appears my current graphics card (at
this point at least) is not compatible with those newly added elements. I
have been working off and on to see if there is a solution that would
provide compatibility so I can try out the new toys and find out if they
would be of value to me, without purchasing a new GPU.

Thanks for alerting me about the text issue. I'll check that out.

We see the forum software do that sometimes, but not always. You can attach a .txt file with the info.
