P: Photoshop can't open, freezes on splash image, uses all of ram trying to open then crashes.

I have googled every possible variation of this problem and tried every fix for this problem, none of them worked. I have tried reinstalling photoshop, deleting everything even remotely related to photohop in the appdata, deleting custom fonts, restarting the computer, updating graphics and computer, and holding every possible combination of alt, ctrl and shift while trying to launch in administrator mode. The result is always the same. It opens the splash image, gets to loading preferences or brushes, spikes RAM usage to every last byte of RAM I have, freezes the computer, then crashes.

And no i'm not running it on a potato i'm running it on an Alienware Aurora 4090, it should have more than enough power to handle this and Photoshop ran perfectly fine for months. Then just today it crashed and has never started up again.

Photoshop version 25.11

UPDATE

As the team investigates this issue, it has been determined that if you remove these beta apps:

  • Media Encoder beta
  • After Effects beta
  • Premiere Pro beta and
  • Character Animator beta

your other Adobe apps should open as expected.

Thanks,

Cory - Photoshop Product Manager

Thank y'all for your replies and for confirming that it's not just me. This is really frustrating. Fortunately, for me, earning a living does not currently depend on my use of Photoshop. But the weekly podcast I co-host does rely on my use of Photoshop. Crossing fingers this get resolved for all of us quickly!

I finally resolved this by using the "Clean All" option on the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.  This completely erased all my Adobe apps and their folders (except for Adobe Acrobat), so first I backed up all the settings/prefs/presets from them that I wanted to keep. I had to reinstall everything. But now Photoshop opens again!

So maybe it is a corrupt file that multiple apps rely on that is causing this, even though it only seems to impact Photoshop and Illustrator?

My apps started running slow while I was working today, so I updated, and now neither will load.

Illustrator—the dock icon shows the app is open, but it won't get past the initializing screen, and then freezes completely on "initializing Plug-ins," of which there should be none.

Photoshop—the dock icon either contiuously bounces or displays like the app is closed, and it displays the initializing screen, which freezes on "Done Sorting Font List."

What I've tried:

- I've uninstalled and reinstalled both apps numerous times

- I've restarted my computer numerous times

- I've deleted/restored largest preset files

- I've deleted all third-party font files in my Font Book

- I've reinstalled all Adobe fonts

So far, it's been about 4 hours of troubleshooting with no progress whatsoever.

Any advice?

I have Photoshop (Beta) v.25.12, Photoshop v.25.11, Illustrator (Beta) and Illustrator 28.6, and my system is using Mac OS Sonoma 14.5.

I'm having the same issue with Photoshop, Illustrator, & Indesign. Lightroom, Premiere, and Audition all load without incident. I tried using the cleaner tool on all 3 apps, installed previous versions of these apps, safe mode, countless restarts, etc. @adobe, we could really use a fix ASAP.

I've also tried…

- Uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe CC

It just keeps hanging on adding extension. I remove all extensions to get it to open but it only did that after I reinstalled it and remove the extensions. Very buggy now.

Do you know that you can launch Photoshop while holding down the Shift key, which forces it to not load third party plugins and extensions?

If you start with none of them installed and install them one at a time and test, you can tie it down to the problem add on.  Or is this happening with all plugins and extensions?

Can you list them for us?  Have you checked the website for each one to see if there is a known issue?  I can't remember a similar thread to yours.

It would be useful to know the OS version you are using, and specific hardware (i.e.  M1, M2, Intel etc.

Shame issue. I start Photoshop up, and then it freezes at Halide Bottlenecks. I have followed all the online advice, but nothing works. It's so odd, because Photoshop was fine just a few days ago. Really frustrating, as I have some important work to do.

You saved my life, I was struggling thinking about what to do, I am a user of a macbook m1 with sonoma 14.5, normally I do not update the OS, until months after there have been no errors in the working software, but this time I trusted myself, since I had not read reports about it, when I tried to enter Photoshop and it just kept loading I panicked, but thanks to you I was able to resolve the situation in a much simpler way than having to downgrade to Ventura... thank you very much!!

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Hi @AXN Studio what version of Ps beta are you updating to? Do you have any issues with an older version, trying to make sure you can launch Ps beta and what version you see this issue with?

Thanks,

Update on my end is I used the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool as @Celestial_self0D44 suggested and it worked.

Also spoke with customer support, and as @Sameer K mentioned, it was a known issue with Photoshop… particularly with the M1 chip systems, apparently, and he said they were prioritizing a patch for it.

Very frustrating, but I'm hoping my problems are solved for now, since I lost almost the entire workday yesterday trying to fix it.

Hey everyone, I ended up having to reach out to tech support and it took them 90 minutes to remotely fix the problem.  I know it involved downloading the "AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool", and it also involved throwing out the cache from ALL the apps.  I can't retend to know exactly what was done, but if you can't fix the problem on your own with this information, budget in an hour to 90 minutes to work with ADOBE tech support (I called but you can have it done via chat as well during business hours).  Don't wait until the weekend!!

I'm experiencing the same issues as of yesterday. I have a MacBook Pro and it just stalls on the 'adding extension...Halide Bottlenecks' and I have no other option but to force quit. Incredibly frustrating since I need these programs for school right now. I've tried all the troubleshooting methods too including restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling the apps and nothing is working
