P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2020 Dec 09, 2020

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

Reposting this from *ishal ismail, which solved the problem for me. Many thanks, Ishal!

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the pri

Please let me be clear. This bug is making PS unusable for many people. The fact you've known about it for many months, and not addressed it is extremely disappointing.

Hi there, My name is Sympa and I'm an Engineer with the GPU team. I am so sorry that you're experiencing this problem. Truly I understand the impact it can have on workflow and I want to help. What you're describing sounds possibly related to the GPU team. Send me an email at sympa@adobe.com with answers to the below?

  • Are your applications installed in the default operating system directory or a custom directory? If custom, please specify the path being used?
  • Do you have more than one graphics card? Are they the same make and model? Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
  • Do you have updated drivers for peripherals (Wintab, Wacom), and GPU (NVidia, AMD):
  • Are you using more than one monitor? Does it repro if only laptop display is used?
  • Attach to the bug report this file: Finder > Top Menu > Apple > About This Mac > System Report... > File > Save > FileName.spx
  • Is the GPU being run in a virtualized environment?:
  • Have you turned off GPU in preferences → performance?:
  • Does turning on this setting fix your issue? legacy compositing in preferences → performance:
  • Did this behave correctly in a previous version of photoshop (which?):
  • Is the issue reproducible on both Mac & Windows?:
  • Reproducibility (sometimes? 100%?):
  • Include file that reproduces this issue:
  • Attach to bug report a screen recording of you following the steps needed to arrive at reproducing this issue:
  • Attach to bug report a screen recording of expected behavior:
  • Attach to bug report the log from help → system info:

Hi Sympa and Jeff, thanks for your responses, I have emailed this but thought I would post it here to help others.

The error we are having is using photoshop on 2 different Macs ( 1 iMac 27inch 2019 and 1 MacBook Pro 13inch  2017 ), both started doing it at the same time, one had just been updated to 22.1 the other had not (but continued with the issue after updating)
I am not at either Mac right now but if nothing has changed I will produce a bug report for you later.
This happens 100% of the time with whatever file type however I try and save it.
Tried turning off GPU on MacBook which didn’t work either.
Can’t attach file as they belong to clients and also it happens on all files so not applicable anyway.
Everything else you asked is a no or not applicable.

Just to be clear that another days loss of productivity is not acceptable at our busiest time of year and will result in the loss of our custom.

Happens every time I try to save, happens across different files and trying to "save as" don't work..

Can't find the solution in the error log.

Please help 😕

Photoshop has become a dumpster fire guys. It is now a horribly buggy, unusable, unstable tool and with each new release it seems to be getting worse. PS 22.1 update on a Zbook X2: GPU acceleration: Laggy and Slow (three seconds to zoom in on a 4k image with no layers). Turn off GPU acceleration: Laggy and slow. Turn on GPU acceleration with OpenCL, wait a minute, it might be working now, seems a bit snappier, start working on an image, zoom in, nothing happens, zoom out nothing happens, f*ck another graphics bug, maybe if I save, no! PS can't save because of a program error, sh*t lost all the work I just did (I mean it was only 10 minutes of work, but still no excuse). Guess I'll restart and try again.

I'm not putting much strain on the software, the file above was a 5 layer, 4k image before Photoshop had a hemmorage. Let's go back in time for a minute... Photoshop prior to the CS2 was a solid piece of kit. It was stable and would rarely crash or have issues. If it did crash, it was usually because of a system issue or user error. It was a workhorse, like a 1976 Mercedes 240D. This latest release runs like a Lada. Photoshop has become a last resort for me. I'll using anything else: Nuke, Resolve, Mari, Procreate, Corel Paint, Krita, Microsoft Paint, a pen and paper, a piece of burnt wood and a rock.

Whatever you guys are doing is not working. Fix this before it gets worse. There's just so much wrong it's not worth listing all the problems. Go back to the last, good version and go from there. If I don't see an improvement over the next few releases I'm just going to stop using it outright. I can't rely on it anymore and I can't spend 90% of my time troubleshooting fixes and only 10% of my time on work. For the sake of the legacy of the software, take the time to fix it, for the love of art.

Rant over.

Seems to have been fixed with an update this morning!

please please don’t release such buggy versions of software, you are a company supplying millions of professionals who can’t afford to loose a days work. Your product is the most expensive on the market and as such we expect a product to match, I don’t feel that I am getting that compared to the other options at the moment.

Gone are the days when Adobe was the only option.

Sorry, there seems to be a lot of cross-posting with people running different versions and different issues.

Photoshop 22.0.0 through 22.0.1:

Customers with old graphics cards that are no longer supported starting with 22.0.0 and later can produce program errors: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#ProgramErroropeningfiles

Following the instructions in the document above should solve this issue.

Specifically, disabling "Use Graphics Processor" and restarting Photoshop fixes for most customers. Please let me know if you're in this category where disabling the GPU solves this issue for you.

Other customers had bad preferences, possibly related to GPU settings they had set in the prior version of Photoshop. Restoring your prefs by manually removing the Photoshop Setting folder to reset prefs solves this issue for some customers. (Again, instructions in the link above)

Photoshop 22.1:

It sounds like some customers are not in the group above and were not having any issues running 22.0.0 - 22.0.1.

Who on this thread was not getting a program error with Photoshop 22.0.x but is now getting with a program error since the 22.1 update that went out Monday night?

If you're in this group, does following the troubleshooting here https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#ProgramErroropeningfiles  (restoring prefs and/or disabling the GPU) solve the issue for the people in this group? It sounds like some of you tried restoring prefs in comments above. If that doesn't work, if you disable Use Graphics Processor and restart Photoshop, does that make things work without program error.

Windows 10 - and it *seems* like the problem started after a Windows update. But I'm not certain. I have PS on a desktop and a laptop (both Windows 10) and the desktop is not having the same problem.

Also, apologies for the curtness of the post. I had lost the entire afternoon and was fairly frustrated.

Hi Roger, no problem, I can completely understand the frustration. On the laptop, if you go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" and restart Photoshop does the problem go away?

OK, did that and the problem didn't go away. So we need another solution.

Can you make older versions of PS available? Or a previous stable version? I have trouble understanding what has happened and why this obviously untested and unstable version of the program was released.

*Sympa what are the parameters for Windows 10?

I can say the following:

  • Are your applications installed in the default operating system directory or a custom directory? If custom, please specify the path being used?
    DEFAULT
  • Do you have more than one graphics card? Are they the same make and model? Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
  • ONE CARD ONLY
  • Do you have updated drivers for peripherals (Wintab, Wacom), and GPU (NVidia, AMD):
  • SUFACE PRO LAPTOP - DRIVERS UP TO DATE
  • Are you using more than one monitor? Does it repro if only laptop display is used?
  • YES
  • Attach to the bug report this file: Finder > Top Menu > Apple > About This Mac > System Report... > File > Save > FileName.spx
  • PATH IN WINDOWS?
  • Is the GPU being run in a virtualized environment?:
  • NO
  • Have you turned off GPU in preferences → performance?:
  • YES, DID NOT HELP
  • Does turning on this setting fix your issue? legacy compositing in preferences → performance:
  • Did this behave correctly in a previous version of photoshop (which?):
  • Is the issue reproducible on both Mac & Windows?:
  • WINDOWS ONLY
  • Reproducibility (sometimes? 100%?):
  • 100%
  • Include file that reproduces this issue:

Seriously. We shouldn't have to do this. We pay for this product. Any updates with bugs this massive shouldn't have been released in the first place. Fix this and do better in the future.

I was able to possibly fix a crashing problem by resettings prefs. I haven't had a chance to put things back the way I had them (in case that was the culprit somewhere) but I'm happy to send the malfunctioning preferences in.

Some files would crash on opening and others would let me work for a time but crash when I created a curves layer.

@craig_washburn

If you're able to repro I would like to have a copy of your preferences, problematic, and the one that works for you. Please send to sympa@adobe.com if you can repro and then resetting them fixes the problem.

I am in the 22.1 group. I did both actions in your post, I still get 'program error' alert when I try to save a document (I do have a random workaround - hiding layers, and then it will save). I also still cannot merge layers or export out without getting thew same warning. Also, if I try to zoom in the image starts to break down and there's missing information.

I was on chat with a rep from Adobe, who took over my computer and tried a few things. They were able to get one document to not showcase these problems by 'save as' to the computer (not cloud), and we assumed that would work for all, but unfortunately other documents still showcase the same problems, even 'saved as' somewhere else.

Not sure if this would be helpful, but I don't get the error if I'm not dragging and dropping an image into an existing layered PSD file. I was able to open a file, change the text ONLY then it saved with no problem. If I open a file, drop a new layer in then is when I get the error.

Is anyone at Adobe working on this? Seem like there are lots of people affected...
