I don't know enough about Photoshop actions, but would it be possible to make an action which would flatten the file, save it, and then unflatten it automatically?

Yes, I did create an action for this. I'm happy to share, but I'm not sure if I can attach a file to this thread? Here are the steps to create the action:

1. Begin recording action.
2. Select all (Command + A)
3. Copy merged (Command + Shift + C)
4. Create a new document (Command + N) and 'Create'
5. Paste into the new document (Command + V)
6. Merge visible (Command + Shift + E)
7. Click the hamburger button (top right on your Actions Panel) and choose 'Insert Menu Item'. Ignore 'Insert Menu Item' popup and go onto step 7.
8. File > Save.
9. Select 'OK' in the 'Insert Menu Item' popup.
10. File > Close > Don't Save
11. Stop recording action.

This action takes the layers and copies them into another document, saves the file and then closes it. That way, there's no danger of you merging your original document by mistake.

Hope this helps!

Still having the issue with Photoshop 21.1.2 on Mac OS Catalina. If you want to overwrite a jpg file it creates a copy. Common this is so basic and it really slows your workflow!!! specially working for web and also when you have linked jpg files on Illustrator.

I upgraded to Catalina not too long ago and now I'm regretting it as I am having the same issue. NEVER have had a problem before until Catalina. Now I feel like the only solution is to downgrade to Mojave which is a bit of a pain in the butt to do. Seeing how this feed is going on 6months, you would think there would have been a patch by now. I feel everyone's pain. Sign indeed!

That is just stupid that it has been what 4-5 months now and still no fix.

Only feasible workaround that keeps me sane has been adding a shortcut to 'flatten image' that closely resembles the the 'Save as...' shortcut to keep things as fluid as possible.

Shift+⌘+F for Flatten
Shift+⌘+S for Save as...
and afterwards follow with
⌘+Z to remove Flattening

I decided to downgrade to Mojave. Had to do an erase and install. Installed the OS system that came with the computer (I think it was High Sierra). Upgraded that to Mojave and things are working as normal. Kinda a pain to do (backing up files, reinstalling software, etc), but it would have been a much bigger pain to deal with this glitch. Staying away from Catalina for now!

I've dealt with this problem as well, but I found that "Export/Save for Web" actually replace the file and don't add the " copy".  It worked for me perfectly.

I found a workaround that works. 1st Save your layered file, 2nd Flatten image (from layer panel drop-down menu), 3rd File Save As the file to the file name you want to replace. Once you done these 3 steps your opened file is now the replaced file. No need to find it in your folder to open. TRY A TEST FILE first so you get the hang of it. It works perfectly for me.

Yes this works as a workaround... which take up the same amount of time too as "Save as".. "Quick Export as jpg" or "Quick Export as png"

I am also having a slew of other problems in addition to not the copy-save.

Anyone else experience a blank screen when opening an image that you just closed? I have to constantly quit and relaunch the app in order to be able to view that image again. Only in Catalina.
