Same.

I wrote to Adobe Support the following:

1. Create test.psd file
2. Save test.jpg
3. Make changes and try to rewrite test.jpg you've created on step 2
4. Dialogue window appears that says: '... replacing it will OVERWRITE its current contents'.
5. Click 'replace'
6. Creates 'test copy.jpg' and not overwrites current contents

Expected: overwrite old file with the new one
Bug: Creates new file 'test copy.jpg'

They say it's a known issue, and pointed me to this thread. That's all, folks.

I think this could actually be a Mac issue. I have the latest version of PS on both my Windows PC and my Macbook and I don't have the issue when overwriting an already saved JPEG file on my PC. My only work around so far has been to do a Quick Export as JPG.

Yep, totally stopped working after 1 day. What the f***! He didn't seem concerned about the issue at all, just screenshared my computer, made the change, and that's that. I thought I had overlooked this simple fix the whole time. Ugh.

Same issue. This issue appeared after software updated to release 21.0.2. Very Frustrating.

Thanks for the update Elizabeth, sorry it quit working for you too.  Fingers crossed that Adobe fixes this soon.

The best option right now for MAC users is to use the Export function. Its a relief once you use it! File> Export >> Export As..

I hope this helps you guys reduce some of that annoyance.

Same here. Only noticed this bug once I upgraded to Catalina about a month ago (late to the party, I know). Now I have the same issue described above.  Patrick Mauldin described it the most completely with screen shots and everything. Adobe please fix. 3 months with nothing is unacceptable.

It has not always been this way. It makes adjusting elements for indesign a nightmare.

I just installed Photoshop 21.0.3 and I can say the issue is NOT fixed in that update.

And you know what blows my mind? I have the issue when I am working on my MacBook pro, but not on the Mac Pro (desktop). On the desktop, it still overwrites the old jpg with no problems!!!!

A-ha! The desktop has Mojave but MacBook has Catalina. Maybe it IS a Catalina issue and not Adobe. Either way, someone please resolve!

I would say the burden falls on Adobe as it is (apparently) a compatibility issue with the latest OS. Rarely (if ever?) will you find an OS release fix to accommodate a 3rd-party application, but the other way around. Cheers!

Yes, this is 100% on Adobe. When half your client base is using a certain OS, you absolutely have to ensure you stay compatible with it. This isn't Apple's fault.

Supposedly, if you get Adobe tech support and share your screen, they do something to remedy the situation - most likely delete and/or edit a file in the Library->Adobe folder. If anyone has done this, would like to know, this remedy should be posted ONLINE for ALL TO SEE. It has to do with permissions - it is related to the same issue that greys out all of the filenames in dialogue boxes. Adobe apps, for some reason, getting hung up on the Catalina update. Why they can't release an update to this is mind-boggling given the size of the user base they are pissing off. Thanks.

I think it is an OS problem - Catalina. I have Catalina on my MacBook Pro and it started happening when I updated. On my desktop, I haven't updated yet and it's fine.

The screen share and permissions remedy does not work. I've done this w/ Adobe tech support already. In the end, he said they knew it was a known issue and will be fixed in an upcoming update (obviously not the last one!

I think I just stumbled upon a workaround fix!! If you use the "Save For Web" feature it seems to actually overwrite the file rather than saving it as a copy.  Let me know if this works for you!!
File > Export > Save for Web
