P: Using Wacom Cintiq pro pen in Liquify will crash Photoshop every time

I have a problem the last few months with using the Wacom pen in Liquify. After I applied the Liquify effect, Photoshop starts being unusable so I have to save my docs and restart. It is worth noting the previous version of Ps worked perfectly. I don't understand why Adobe developers always fix one thing while destroying another thing. If this was the only bug I experienced, it wouldn't be so bad, but I can start counting the bugs in the new releases. As a heavy user, I can't ignore it.

I can confirm that the problem is still here after installing the newest drivers from AMD (21.2.3), and the newest drivers from Wacom. I am also using the newest version of Photoshop.

You are welcome. I made a video in which I demonstrate the problem  after using Liquify and pen. All the tool (marquee tool, text tool... you can see in the video how other tools are misbehaving) go crazy. BUT!!

I discovered by accident that if I use the brush tool and draw something, it will cure the problem completely. Weird, isn't it? But, if I open another document and try Liquify while using the pen, the problem will start again. As soon as I use the brush tool to draw something, the problems go away. At least temporarily, until I open another document. I hope this will help.

@frafilipo art , Can you please try the same scenario in CPU mode?

How to enable CPU mode?

  1. Navigate to the menu, Edit --> Preferences --> General
  2. Select Performance
  3. Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor"
  4. Click Ok and save the settings.

It is still producing the same set of problems, even with GPU turned off.

I made a video with CPU scenario, you can see it below.

*Dominic Michael in this case the app would work, but it would not help fixing the underlying issue for other users as well. It can be useful to work, but I hope that @frafilipo art would continue helping the Ps team fix the issue.

@Pierre_Courtejoie

Actually, it doesn't work with GPU turned off. It gives completely the same set of problems. You can see it in the video.

I did restart the Photoshop. I tried that solution more than couple of times, as everybody suggested turning off the GPU as the first remedy.

@chad_rolfs

Did you watch my video in which I show how drawing few strokes with the brush tool fixed the problem. Isn't that strange, maybe the developers can find link between those two actions.

@frafilipo art if possible, one option could be to check if clearing Ps preferences (Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Reset Preferences on Quit and then restarting Ps) helps.

Thanks, but that doesn't work.  I tried many times. I tried on different PCs. No success.

Is this going to be fixed? This is not a small bug, as it makes Wacom pen usseles for a lot of retouching jobs. Once again, it all started when PS update made changing the brush size smoother.

@frafilipo art  There were several GPU fixes in the last few release updates.  Can you try the most recent one, 22.4.2 and let me know if the flashing is still happening?  Looks like there's also a Wacom driver update, please try that also.

This is not fixed, it works only with non-smart object, with the smart objects it crashes the same as before.
