Hi

I'm having trouble with Photoshop CS6 in Mavericks. After a working a little while, all pop up/drop down menus goes blank. They still work, but I can't see what's on them. Even the Apple menu bar is afflicted by this, though only when Photoshop is in the front.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.  PS: I do use a cintiq on a 2012 Macbook Pro 15" with retina display.

It looks like the plug-in fails to initialize on certain Photoshop installations. This should be fixed in:

    http://www.bache.name/download/osx/WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin1_0_5.zip

If the plug-in is properly installed, then you should see something  similar to the following in the OSX console after launching Photoshop:

     Adobe Photoshop CC[14728]: WhiteWindowWorkaround Initialized

You can see the OSX console by going to “Utilities” from Finder, and then running the Console application.

So far we only have 2 reports of this, and we haven't seen it on any of our systems with MacOS 10.9 installed.

Our best guess is a third party system extension or plugin causing interference with menu drawing.

I am experiencing the same issues here. Not using any 3rd party plugins.

I'm experiencing weird (random) glitches while using the Polygon Lasso Tool. When these 'glitches' start to occur, the blanc menus start to show up.

I work on an 2012 iMac, 32 Gb Ram, Wacom Intuous Tablet..

BTW, I'm using Photoshop CC.

Hi. I'm also not using any 3rd party plugins. I have also noticed that it often happens when using a lasso tool or doing anything with selections. However, I couldn't force the menu glitch when I tried to force it using the lasso tool.

We are also having this issue with our two brand new 27 inch iMacs (not Haswell but the previous model) in our photography studio. We're running recent installs of Photoshop CC and since the computers are only used for Photoshop, the only thing we installed on them was Photoshop, Bridge, and nothing else except the driver for our Wacom Intuos 4 tablets. The issue started happening today on both computers, right after installing Mavericks this morning. It never happened before.

So far, the issue happened once on each of two computers over the course of 6 hours of continuous work.

The issue is solved when quitting Photoshop and reopening it, however, when having many unsaved files open, it becomes almost impossible to save them as the menu and dialog boxes are all blank. So it inderectly leads to lost data.

Here's the system info from one of the computers:

Check all your system extensions / utilities -- something is interfereing with menu drawing, and it doesn't affect everyone, so it is probably something that you have installed on your system.

Start with all the system extensions and utilities that you have installed.

Many will be listed in the system preferences panel, or on the menu bar.  But only you know what you have installed.

And, as always, avoid anything that claims to be a system "cleaner" (they do more damage than good).

Our machines have nothing installed other than what's necessary: Photoshop CC, Bridge CC, Llightroom 5, latest Wacom Intuos 4 driver, MPEG Streamclip, Perian, Flash and Java. That's really it.

I'm the system administrator and I make sure that nothing other than what's absolutely necessary is installed on them, because I know that keeping a system clean makes troubleshooting problems like this much easier. There are no extensions, utilities and god forbid any "cleaner" applications, whatsoever installed. Since the machines are just a month old, it's easy to keep track of what's been installed.

A bit more detail on the problem: not only do menus go blank (white), but also strange artefacts appear. When using the crop tool, for example, a fairly large white square appears at the bottom right of the Crop cursor, and follows it around when dragging. Clicking and holding the mouse on a tool in the toolbar brings up a sub-menu filled with random bits such as brush thumbnails. In addition, when closing Photoshop, the "Do you want to save?" dialog is completely white too. So it's not just popup menus.

We have two more iMacs that have not (yet) exhibited the issue, but they are identical in both hardware and software to the two that have had the problem. I will keep an eye on them to see what happens.

The issue only happened twice, once on one iMac, and once on another, within an 8 hour period of constant heavy use of Photoshop.

I'm sure the issue is related to Mavericks, as it only started happening today, and we installed Mavericks this morning.

I too only have java, flash and a couple of wacom drivers (Wacom Tablet and Bamboo) in my system preferences. I can report that my issue happened at variable times. But often recurring as much as ten or so seconds after launch. However, working in a different file now, the issue have yet to occur after about 90 minutes of work. I can add that the previous file I was using had been worked on in Corel Painter 12.

When this happens, what do you see in the "Console"?

Launch Utilities>Console.app, and click "All Messages" Then look for error messages towards the bottom - messages are time stamped and you can use this to filter out irrelevant messages.

You're connected to an SMB server that isn't working quite right.

And MacOS is having trouble with one of the windows in Photoshop - so that might be a symptom of the failure to draw, but doesn't tell us why the OS is having trouble with a window.

Thanks for posting these images.

Yes the CGSLockWindow failure is interesting. What kinds of tasks are you doing in Photoshop before this happens?

I'm having the same problems as described above after installing Mavericks.  White boxes instead of menus.  I've tried basic troubleshooting, uninstalling, reinstalling, wiping prefrences clean, updating Photoshop.  No change in results.

I'm having problems when I use the polygonal lasso, sometimes transforming objects (I get a weird white square next to the boudning box) and also certain brushes simply stall photoshop.

I also run a wacom cintiq.  Could this be tablet related?

Thanks,

Michael

"I also run a wacom cintiq.  Could this be tablet related?"

My feeling says this is the case. When I disconnect the tablet and connect / work with a mouse the Lasso tool seems to work without problems.
Maybe Wacom driver is not ready for Mavericks...?

How can we further test this?

I mostly use the brush tool, eraser and selection tools. There seem to happen more when selection and the color picker are used, but it is still to random to say. The color picker do "stutter" for a split second when you open it, though.

And what's the deal with smb?

We're also connected to an SMB share network, unfortunately it's an old network and it's always causing various file-related problems. Not sure if that's related to the Photoshop bug.

That makes it sound like a video driver or system drawing issue.

But it could still be related to a driver or utility software.

I've had the exact same problem on the exact same setup, (27" iMac 3.4ghz i7 16G ram 2G gfx card) except for using an intuos 5 tablet. Happened once so far, and haven't been able to reproduce it. Fortunately I'd configured one of the tablet buttons to save, so no lost work (except having to restart). I have no other 3rd party plugins except the tablet driver (latest version). I've also lost my cursors twice (reverts to default), and the Liquify command fails to save/exit (this last isnt fixed, no one seems to have an answer)

Regarding the Liquify save/exit failure. Have you checked for premissions problems? You can use Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility to Verify Disk Permissions.

Have you tried the plug-in that jesper provided to avoid the blank menu/window issue? Grab it here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/6025821#6025821

If you want to try John Worthington's suggestion about user permissions causing your Liquify issue, the easiest way to test it by creating a new admin user account. Details here: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/07/photoshop-basic-troubleshooting-steps-to-fix-most-issues.h...

Many thanks for the replies guys,

A couple of things first:

Re: the font cache fix in the page about font problems, I dont have a 'TypeSupport' folder

Re: Jesper's plugin. Where is it? I went thru the thread and found 3 links to the plugin (different versions) all appear to be dead ends (Safari says it cant locate the server)

Re: The instructions re Jeffs 'making a new admin user account': The link: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/07/photoshop-basic-troubleshoot ing-steps-to-fix-most-issues.... simply leads to Apple's main Mac page (apple.com/mac/)I know how to do this but there's obviously extra or important steps (PS: An otherwise brilliant page Jeff, many thanks)

Anyway, I'll go try some things and see ya back here, my sys info is here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1891835/PS%20Sysinf.rtfd/TXT.rtf

One tiny question, if I reinstall PS and I've exported/saved all my prefs & settings, when I reinstall & import it all back, will I have pretty much the same setup as now?

Finally, just in case any Adobe folk are about, Kudos on the "recent colours" bar in the 'swatches' pallette, you read my mind!!

Here's the direct link to the latest plugin http://www.bache.name/download/osx/WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin1_0_5.zip

The link appears to be working this AM.

Are you looking in the right library. User vs system.

The instructions for troubleshooting permissions should instruct you to create a new Admin user account in system preferences. Log into that new user account and run PS to see if the problem goes away.
