Does anyone know of a quality EXR plugin for the Mac (something like EXR-IO which is Windows only)? ProEXR has not been updated for almost a year and OpenEXR is simply awful.

Hi @seans94943058 is there a reason you aren't just opening the EXR file directly in Photoshop?

Doesnt support multi-layered EXRs. Flattens everything I try to open. Also no Crypto support.

I can't believe this still isn't solved in 2023. Uhg.

Hello @Kevin Stohlmeyer I have just downloaded PorEXR and was going to give up on it until I saw your post. Yiu have it workig but I cant get it to work. Please see attached images. My cryptomat layers render as broken lines rather than fully formed blocks. Im rendering from C4d at 32 bit. Is there any way you can help me resolve this issue please?

Did this work on the Mac? Im using PS 2014 on a M1 mac on Ventura. Couldnt get Proexr to work.
Any alternatives?

Ia have the ver same issue, resulting in using a windows machine in the studio to open up the EXR files to get the Cryptomattes to work properly (using EXR-IO) and save out a PSB file. - not the best thing to be doing.
A workaround I have found is to pull the EXR into After effects, Use the Cryptomatte adjustment to pick out the parts I need, then render out 1 single frame as a TIFF file. That gives you the alpha. not the best solution but works if you dont have access to a Windows machine.

I listed options for both Mac and Windows solutions in this thread.

Yes, there are several EXR plugins for Mac that you can use. One option is the OpenEXR plugin for Adobe Photoshop, which is available for both Mac and Windows. Another option is the EXRKit plugin for Final Cut Pro X, which is also available for Mac.
If you are looking for a standalone plugin, you can try the Mac version of the OpenEXR viewer called exrdisplay, which is part of the OpenEXR distribution. Another standalone option is the Imath Viewer, which supports EXR files on Mac and is part of the OpenEXR package.
Overall, there are many options for using EXR files on a Mac, so you should be able to find one that works for you.

OpenEXR - as stated further up in the thread, this does not provide what 3D artists require from EXRs
EXRKit - cannot find this anywhere but if it's for FCP what good is that for PS users
EXRDisplay/Imath - again too simplistic and dont provide what 3D artists need.
So back to square one.

I managed to get Proexr to work on pc using PS2022 but no joy on the Mac 2023. I may try downloading PS2022 and see if that works. It's a real pain and a show stopper for me. Need access to multilayered EXR files. Come on Adobe, sort it out.

EXR-IO is the gold standard of EXR plugins. BUT...it is Windows only hence my specificity about Mac in my original post.

Did you post a Feature Request or add your vote to an existing one (in case one does already exist)?

@Andrew26207007u57e wondering why the onus is on Adobe Photoshop and not EXR Pro plugin developers to keep up with versions?

Seriously Exr-IO, you have what photoshop retouchers and 3D artists NEED, but it's only available on a PC? You DO realize that theres probably MORE Mac users that need this creative control that you'll find in any studio in the world. I am beginning a collabotration with a 3D artist and I need to buy a PC to get the control over his work I NEED to take it to the next level? Or is the workflow open layers on a PC then open my host PS file on my Mac? Either way ridiculous. Hire someone to port it to Mac already.

@seans94943058 I feel your pain, with people not reading your post. I just downloaded ProEXR. I haven't tested it, but the table on page 9 of "ProEXR Manual.pdf" in the dmg states ProEXR supports multiple layers (screenshot attached). Hope it's of use.
Cheers

Hi @seans94943058,
Just figured out about plugins EXR into Photoshop 2023 for Mac:
https://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/
Downloaded for Mac and works excelent for 3D artist! All you need is copy the plugins (ProEXR/Photoshop) "ProEXR EZ.plugin" and "ProEXR.plugin" then paste Plug-ins carpet:
Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2023/Plug-ins
In Photoshop open the .exr file, you can now select "ProEXR" or "ProEXR" format. And you will be able to see all the layers with AVOs renders 🙂
Hope this works for you all 3D Artist!
As he wrote before @Kevin Stohlmeyer. Thanks for that!
