Hi there,
I'd like to report a bug, as in subject. This happens only in 25.9 version, I've downgraded to 25.7, and it doesn't happen.
When I have a document, with couple of artboards in it (let's say, ad banners) - when I try to move any artboard, and, after clicking on the name, and starting to drag it to move it someplace alse - when I try to pass it over any other artboard, or layer, which is outside the artboards - PS freezes.
It happens every time, in every document I've opened.
I found the "solution"!!!
If you turn OFF [Auto-size Canvas] option, then there is no more freezing/hanging.
The only side-effect is the canvas size. It stays as is, so if you try to move an artboard out of the canvas, then it will be "hidden".
But the easiest way is to make two empty artboards (when [Auto-size Canvas] is on) and put these to the top left and bottom right corner of the "needed" canvas and then turn OFF the [Auto-size Canvas] option.
Edit: if you move an artboard out of canvas (bec

Well, the hanging problem wasn't there a year ago, so I don't think it's fundamental, it rather seems they broke it with new features. But at this point, anything probably requires uncomfortable amout of work, and I wouldn't be surprized they're not fixing it simply because they know they'll get away with it.

Just to be transparent, there are currently two bugs open in this area:
These two issues are tied together at this time. They are being actively worked.
Short-term, item (1) can be mitigated by disabling canvas auto-size, as previously suggested, or by setting the following line in PSUserConfig.txt:
"TransformArtboardGradientFill 0"
This will cause other, older bugs with Artboards and Gradients to manifest, but if gradients are not being used, this might resolve the hang problems and be a viable short-term solution. I recommend using either one or the other of these approaches, but not both.

Thank you for shining the light.

Sorry CJ, but this excuses are unacceptable. You said the artboard-translating is "computationally very expensive algorithm"... very funny. You know, we use a lot of applications, which are fluid, responsive even with large canvas. For example Figma has an "infinite" canvas with gradients, large images, and effects. And this is a web app!!! Simply javascript and html/css with a strong backend. Or there is Blender, an opensource app which can handle millions of polygons, and millions of bezier curves (Grease pencil) whithout any problem (Illustrator and Photoshop would crash with these many curves).
So please, as an Adobe employee, pass the request from us to your decision-makers: besides (or instead) of AI work more on the fundamentals. We dont care about your coding issues, its your job. We pay and pay more and more. So fix it, or even make it from scratch if you cannot fix.

Thank you so much for this workaround, this has been really bogging down my workflow. I thought it was my computer but now I am realizing it is the software. I am curious how many art boards others are using when this happens? I have about 5-10 artboards for web design mockups / UI and it takes so long to copy/paste an artboard, or move/rearrange an artboard.

Usually I have 7-10 different product/service banners in 5-6 different size (so its 35-60 artboards). And plus sometimes i need different iterations too, so i use layer comps for those. So it is/was a very big problem for me, so maybe thats why i tried to find some workaround. But, for your works I highly suggest Figma instead of Photoshop. Not just beacause of this bug, but every other aspect of Figma more usable for UI-design.

Thank you so much! I agree Figma is more built for this type of work. I find Photoshop to be slow and clunky for UI. My developer wants the files in Photoshop, and I'm also more familiar with working in Photoshop.
so glad you found this workaround, and I agree, the artboard issue was driving me crazy!
do you do UI? I'd love to book a session with someone who can show me around Figma to get a basic overview of how to get started. I have designed in Figma before once a file was already setup. Thanks!

For me it works when i make bigger canvas. I force it with positioning 2 seperate layers on top left and bottom right corrner.
After that you can position artboards in between layers.
When you need bigger canvas just move outer layer first to makes canvas bigger and than make/copy/drag artboards in between that area.

I dont understand why we need to figure it out some workaround for a basic thing like this.
The "infinite" canvas works flawlessly in Figma for example... in Figma!!! in a web-app!!
I'm sure this bug comes from the core of Photoshop code (the artboards is a newer feature), but they have a bunch of many from the subscriptions, they must rebuild from scratch if needed.

Someone on another forum found a temporary solution.
The problem seems to be in the size of the sector.
When you create a new artboard the size of the sector changes.
and that change consumes a lot of resources.
so what I do is when I create a new file.
I create many empty work tables. With this, the size of the sector is expanded with empty tables, which does not require as many resources.
Then I disabled the "automatic canvas size" option.
When you do that you will realize that whether you create or delete new work tables, the size of the sector does not change.
and as a result. They move super fluid.
Be careful, don't leave the sector, because you can't work outside of it.
If you want to see the sector, you must enter the "view" "show" "sector" tab
