P: Please add AVIF file support

LEGEND ,
Sep 11, 2020 Sep 11, 2020

With AVIF being supported in modern web browsers the need for AVIF as a save as option or export to option would be very helpful.  For those of us that still use Photoshop as a primary graphic editor (even for simple web sites) this will become more and more important as JPG's are replaced.

AVIF export is now available in Photoshop v26.8. Update your version of Photoshop, and you should find it under File > Save a Copy.

@Dunham13031955 (or @ anyone else reading this, if they're interested),

Actually, you can install a plugin directly from Adobe's Creative Cloud Desktop app (so you won't need to use any unknown websites, download any files, or generally follow any sketchy procedures). To install it right from your desktop, just do the following:

1) Open the Creative Cloud app (usually you can left-click it with your mouse, the icon should be on your Windows taskbar).

2) In the app, there should be a vertical list of icons on the left: Home, Apps, Files, Discover, Stock & Marketplace, and Quick Actions. Click "Stock & Marketplace".

3) In the "Search all Plugins" field, type "avif" and hit Enter. As of September 2024, Adobe should return you a couple of options.

4) Under "AV1 Image (AVIF) File Format", you can click "Get". It will install the plugin for you, it's completely free (PS can't be running, though. You'll need to close it, install the plugin from the app, then reopen PS when you're done).

5) Open PS, open the file you want to save as an AVIF, then go to "File" > "Save a Copy...". The Save window will pop up.

6) Click the option "Save as type:" (it's right below the field where you'd normally name your file). At the top of the list, you should see the option "AV1 Image (*.AVIF)".

That's pretty much it. Give your file a name, then click the "Save" button. A new window will open asking you to choose the quality of your image. For my purposes (background images on my website), the number "40" works very well (no user will notice any difference, especially given the fact it's just a background image, so it's not supposed to be anyone's focus). Depending on what you need, you could go even lower than that. At a quality of 4, 1080px JPGs will give me a file of about 200-300 KB, whereas at the corresponding quality of 40, AVIF will give me a file of about 90 KB. Works for me. 👌🏻

@gregbenz ,

Unfortunately, that's correct. It is only available on Windows at the moment.

So is there no Mac OS supported HDR file format or HDR file plugin for Photoshop then? No using HDR files in Photoshop for Mac users? Hm. Maybe I have to learn Affinity. I think that they support HDR... but will it let me hand assemble panoramas which is what I wish to do?  I guess I'll take a look.

Has this gotten any traction since 2021? Still not an option.

Adding another voice to the chorus - AVIF is gaining a lot of popularity for websites, so would be great (and a big time saver) if Photoshop could natively export to this format

Dear @strawbo13

i believe being silent for 3 years (i am writing this message from the future date of December 4, 2024) after your "automated" message is not looking good at all for a file support discussion and that is why we users are being sarcastic and such because we feel like you guys are not hearing what we are asking. Just a simple deadline announcement can be much more useful instead of an "automated" message. We are "still" kindly waiting for your response about it. Thanks.

Unbeleivable that this functionality is first limited to Microsoft.  Apple has always been the designer's choice.

@j8sin - There's nothing stopping devs on the Mac platform from creating a plugin.

What we want is native support from Adobe in Save As (action and script support please) and Export (same for WebP, which is only for Save/Save As).

@j8sin – There is a difference between 3rd party and native support. You commented that you couldn't believe only Windows 3rd party support existed.

For anyone needing it SKIV supports this, it's the most versatile converter for HDR images.

SpecialKO/SKIV: Special K Image Viewer -- Strong emphasis on HDR capture, encode and tonemapping

if you want a compiled version you can get it in SpecialK, it's in the root directory.
Special K | The Swiss Army Knife of PC Gaming

Small devs can do it just fine but adobe can't spare the resources 😩

Hi Im looking at exporting AVIF files from LR and opening them in Photoshop and am impressed at the reduced size without lack of quality. A 1920 pixel landscape image with 90% compression is approx 350K rather than 700K JPEG which would make sense for files using on websites etc...

Using Mac, however when i open AVIF file with Photoshop it opens in ACR and adds a XMP sidecar to the file. I can then open from ACR into PS but cannot save file. If i choose to close file without saving, any changes made in ACR seem to be preserved in xmp.

it would be good to be able to make changes to AVIF file within PS ie crops and adjustments and resave as AVIF - but not sure if this is possible? I guess at the moment -  if i want to use AVIF files for website - best to make all changes first and then export as AVIF from Lightroom.

I am considering using  AVIF files for photography website project as may be a better choice than JPEGS for maintaining high quality at smaller size,  but would like to be able to open and edit files within photoshop once exported from LR.

Any advice appreciated - also is there a way to write xmp sidecar into file - like with DNG files?.

Hey, @TMPhoto. Thanks for the detailed post.

Instead of opening the file directly in Photoshop, you can use Lightroom to make adjustments, crop, and then integrate Photoshop as a step in your workflow and use 'Edit in Photoshop.' Head here to learn more about Edit in: https://adobe.ly/40cvoj2

The finalized version from Photoshop will come back to Lightroom & you can export it as AVIF from there. This way, you'll skip managing an XMP sidecar generated by Camera Raw.

Let me know if this helps. Thanks!

Thanks Sameer, yes if i do choose to proceed with AVIF rather than JPEGs ( to me they actually look slightly sharper at half the size of JPG), then yes that approach would be good and save having to import file again into LR! Is there a way for xmp file being contained within AVIF files such as with DNG files i wonder!?

It's incomprehensible. Photoshop should be at the cutting edge instead of lagging behind on this sort of thing. Even GIMP is more advanced than Adobe.

Apart from the fact that it's supported in their web content delivery platforms. And I'd never, ever suggest* that they'd withold something in such demand just so it could provide a USP for one of their products!

*Absolutely I would!
