Auto-Transcribe Drifts and I cannot use captions

This has happened multiple times and I don’t have a fix that isn’t manually aligning.

For example, I import a 10 minute talking head segment. When imported, the transcript is automatically created. I bring the video into a sequence and begin removing chunks. When I get down to the details, I ripple edit and remove all pauses. I go to look at the captions and perhaps due to all the fine ripple edits(talking a few frames) all the timecode for the transcript is off and there’s no way to have it reanalyze the transcript, as the re-trascribe is unavailable when the transcript is autocreated when the file was originally imported. This issue compounds when a new sequence is created, or auto reframe is used.

The auto transcribe tool needs to have the ability to update within the sequence and update the timecode for the captions, as it currently drifts.

Thanks for reaching out.  How are you removing the pauses?  Are you using Lift or Extract?  You use Lift to remove all pauses and then go to your timeline.  Under the Sequence Menu, choose Close Gaps.  That should maintain the TC correctly.  Give that a try and let us know how it goes.

That is odd, and I think we need to sort out the point(s) at which this gets out of sync. I don't recall reports of the transcript drifting. I don't know of any reports that a source-media transcription differs whether it is created via auto-transcribing all imports or all in sequence vs a manually triggered transcript.

Is this more than one original source clip? The sequence view of the transcript is the result of editing and the timecodes should match the audio.

The transcript as originally created does not change. Use the Text-based editing workspace (to see the text tab and source monitor at the same time). Open an original clip from the project panel in the Source monitor, switch to the text tab and play. The transcript still matches, correct?

A caption track created in the sequence gets limited updating as you edit, but you can definitely lose timing of words. The better workflow is to create your final captions at the end of the edit.

The best test for an issue of transcript drift is to play the timeline and look at the transcript. Is it in time? The most likely culprit is going to be unintended moves of the audio track relative to video.

Hi Stan, 

I don't believe I expressed the issue perfectly, but your questions are spot on. Let me explain my project set up, and hopefully this will pin-point my issue. This is the second project in a row where I am having the same issue with the text panel. 

Lets say there's one long source clip of a podcast: 1 hour long. The transcript is autogenerated upon import. I create a sequence, "Sequence 1" with the entire 1 hour long clip. I then create a second sequence, which appears in a tab above the timeline, where I isolate a 5 minute chunk, copy/pasted in this new created "sequence 2". The text panel is on the right side vertically so I can see the transcript while I'm editing, with the program monitor in the upper center. If I stay in sequence 2, focusing on editing the picture, removing unneeded sentences, pauses, etc. I'll come to a place where I am finished with picture editing. I'll then take a look at the text panel with the transcript. I'll play the sequence, viewing the source monitor and looking at the transcript on the right side. The text panel should be highlighting the word as they say it in the program monitor, and should be aligning with the audio but what I have experienced is that it no longer aligns. 

At this point, I am noticing two issues while staying in Sequence 2. First issue, is that the transcript in the text panel is no longer in sync with the audio.

I just found a fix for this that seemed to work, but I don't believe it is as intended. I saved the project and completely shut down the program. When I revisited and loaded up the project again, it seemed that the transcript now correctly aligned with the audio. It was not this way when I originally closed the project. 

Second issue, which I have stayed looking at sequence 2 this whole time, is that when I tried to edit the transcript within the text panel - I would click on a transcript line and edit the word but when I clicked out the original line would come back. I found a work around for this, which was clicking on the sequence 1 tab. Looking at the specific transcript moment that I fixed in sequence 2 would update the sequence 1 transcript. Then I would click on sequence 2 again and then it would actually update and show me the change.

To reiterate:

>Sequence 2- I would attempt to edit the transcript. Press enter or click out of the editable box and nothing would update. I would playback the sequence and the transcript would stay as it was originally. 

> I clicked on sequence 1 to see if that text panel transcript would actually be editable but then the changes that I made in sequence 2 would populate here in sequence 1. 

> I click back to sequence 2 and the changes showed up.

@Rach McIntire @Stan Jones Sorry, I didn't tag you guys in my response below. To clarify, the audio is not out of sync with the picture but the transcript becomes out of sync after I finish the picture lock.

A few other questions.

What version of PR are you using? 

How do you create the second sequence? File -> New -> Sequence? Or duplicate the original?

@Rach McIntire's question is a good one: what method did you use to remove pauses?

When you look at your transcript tab, do you have the "follow active monitor" box checked?
