default audio transition inconsistant and very frustrated

Community Beginner ,

I am working on a series of audio podcasts. I am using Premiere because I am very comfortable with the interface, plugins, process, etc.  Per a number of podcast editors, I am using a 2 frame audio transition as my default. HOWEVER, whether I drag and drop or ctrl + shift + d to add the transition, it is inconsistent. Sometimes I get a 2 frame dissolve. Sometimes I get a 1 frame dissolve... that I then have to double click and change to a 2 second dissolve. Extra steps. Extra time. Imagine having to do this over 150 times in one episode! Does anyone have this same issue? Is there a work-around? Is this a bug? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hank

It seems that there is not always enough handles avaiable for the transition. I found this: How to Use Handles for Transition properly in Premiere Pro CC Video (youtube.com)

Audition is actually a better interface for audio only work. As an audio DAW the UI is a bit different at first. But things like fades between cuts, building effective racks of effects per channel are more direct in Audition.

So you might look up Paul Murphy and Mike Russell on YouTube on doing podcasts from Audition.

Thank you for the video. However, it focuses on "handles" and not having enough footage, which, in my case, is basically irrelevant because mine is a solid 45 minute+ audio clip.

I knew someone was going to talk about how Audition is the better program for editing audio. Still does not address my problem.  This should not be happening, regardless of the program.

Got it, but the principle is the same for both video and audio but may not apply to your situation.

OS and exact version of Premiere Pro and properties of the audio, iow 44.1 kHz/8-bit or 96 kHz/196-bit, .wav or .mp3?

Version 24.4 was withdrawn by Adobe since it has issues so i would downgrade to 24.3 and use that version. And, mp3´s do often cause issues in any version, so as a test, convert it to wav and use that as the source audio.

Try it! 🙂

Nice. Thanks Adobe.  I have had the same issue since I started this podcast back in December 2023. Not sure what version that was.  For the next one, I will transcode to wav.  Thank you.

Can you share a screenshot of your timeline?

It would also be good to know your sequence's sample rate and frame rate.

Thanks,
Paul

I changed the file that I received from an mp3 to wav as suggested. Thought I was going to be better for awhile. Now, about 1/3 of the way through, ctrl + shift + d gives me one or both ends as 1 second fades. Anyone else have another thought?  Thanks.

Just to confirm: your Audio Transition Default Transition is set to 2 frames, and sometimes Premiere is adding fades that are 1-2 seconds?

Sorry for the confusion.  2 frame dissolve changes to 1 frame dissolve.... seemingly randomly.

A further update / new issue...  right click (in the timeline in a blank area) - ripple delete... occasionally gives me a 1 frame space. I then have to physically move the clip to the right one frame.  If it is a timeline zoom issue, why?

If I had to guess, this sounds like a mismatch between media and sequence settings.

A bit more info would be helpful. Can you please provide:

  • A screenshot of your timeline with the issue
  • Your media and sequence frame rate
  • Your media and sequence sample rate

Thanks,

Paul

Have you tried using a higher frame rate sequence?

I changed the timeline to 59.97 and the very first time I did ctrl+shift+D, it gave me a 1 frame dissolve that I could not even change to a 2 frame dissolve by double clicking and changing the number to 2. Needless to say, I changed the timeline back to 29.97.

If I was editing audio only I would not use fractional framerates.
